One of these is Zingiber purpureum, which have traditionally been used to treat joint discomfort, the common cold, and jaundice. The rhizomes of this plant have been suggested to possess antibacterial action in the treatment of infections. In this study, Z. purpureum was screened for antibacterial activity against 13 bacteria (Gram-positive and Gram-negative).METHODS: Z. purpureum rhizomes were obtained and the distillated extracts were made to generate essential oil. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Kirby Bauer disk diffusion methods were used to determine the antibacterial activity.RESULTS: All bacteria activity were inhibited by the essential oil of Z. purpureum at concentrations ranging from 2.5 vol% to 10 vol%. However, several bacterias (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter cloacae) were inhibited at the lowest concentration (0.63 vol %), w...

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Bee Pollen Kelulut Bees on HBA1C in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Malaysian Journal of Fundamental and Applied Sciences

Two major problems suffered by patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) are linked to insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion. They often occur in patients aged above 30 years and obese patients. High blood glucose and other complications, including increased HBA1C, are some of the risks faced by people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to reveal the efficacy of bee pollen in lowering the HBA1C levels of patients with type 2 DM. Subjects were gave bee pollen kelulut bees to the intervention group, twice a day in the morning during 4 weeks. This study was quasy experimental research. It involved 30 patients who were divided into the intervention group and the control group. Data were analysis determined the differences in the control and intervention groups using the Mann Whitney test. The result of pre- and post-gr...

We have focused on stingless bee honey, which has a unique taste that is both sweet and sour and sometimes bitter. We screened 12 samples of honey from 11 species of stingless bees using an angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)-spike protein-binding assay and phytochemical analysis. Ten of the samples showed inhibition above 50% in this assay system. Most of the honey contained tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, carotenoids and carbohydrates. Our findings in this in vitro study showed that honey from stingless bees may have a potent effect against SARS-CoV-2 infection by inhibiting the ACE2-spike protein-binding.

Some studies have reported that this herb has biochemical compounds, such as sesquiterpenes, phenolics, polysaccharides, and pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Thus, it has pharmacological effects, including antifungal, antibacterial, cytotoxic, and antinociceptive properties, that can be utilized for cosmetic purposes. However, only a few published works have summarized the active compounds and the application of Eupatorium plants as cosmetic agents. Therefore, this article aims to review the application of Eupatorium plants as a potential cosmetic agent. The active compounds of Eupatorium are contained in the whole plant, as well as the stems, leaves, roots, and aerial parts (flower, fruit, and seeds). In terms of cosmetic applications, the activities of Eupathorium are antioxidant, anti-tyrosinase, anti-melanin/melanogenesis, anti-acne, and anti-inflammatory. This review aims to contribute to a better understa...

Meanwhile, chronic inflammation will cause new health problems to patients. Anti-inflammatory agents generally used for those conditions, have several side effects to patients. The aim of this research was to find alternative anti-inflammatory agents, especially from natural sources.Vernonia amygdalina knew locally as " daun afrika " belong to family Apiaceae is one of those potential natural sources for alternative anti-inflammatory agents. This plant is known astraditionalmedicine from East Kalimantanfor health problems caused by the muscle stiffness and used as material in this research. The experimental method of anti-inflammatory measurement using membrane stabilization activity for V. amygdalina leaves extracts. The results showed that significant differences of EC 50 (p<0.05)achieved between indomethacin as the positive control (26.39 ± 2.91 µg/mL) with V. amygdalina leaves extracts for concentration 1% (131.81 ± 2.95 µg/mL) and 10% (62.54 ± 2.05 µg/mL). EC 50 of V.amygdalina leaves extracts showed the potential anti-inflammatory activities. It could be concluded that V. amygdalina leaves extracts to have anti-inflammatory activities, which could be further developed as a new natural source of the anti-inflammatory agents.

Microbiological parameter is one of main standards of indoor air quality. The study objective was to investigate microbiological assessment of indoor air of different wards of Takalar County Hospital, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Four wards were used for sample collection and these included third, second, first and VIP class ward. Room air temperature, humidity, lighting and number of visitor were also observed. Passive air sampling technique using open Petri dishes containing different culture media was employed. Blood agar plate was used for the bacteria, while Sabouraud dextrose agar plates were used for the fungi. Samplings were done twice daily, one in the morning and other in the afternoon. Isolates were identified according to standard methods. Results show that there was second class ward recorded the highest bacterial growth (1,413 cfu/m 3 in the afternoon). The bacteria isolates were Bacillus sp, Enterobacter sp, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Staphylococcus aureus was the predominantly isolated bacterium. For the conclusion, from the reduction noticed in the morning samples, stringent measures such as proper disinfection and regular cleaning, restriction of patient relatives' movement in and out the wards need to be enforced so as to improve the quality of indoor air of hospital wards.
