Research paper thumbnail of Removal Of Particulate COD By Bioflocculation In The Activated SludgeProcess

Most of the activated sludge models developed for the substrate removal kinetics have commonly as... more Most of the activated sludge models developed for the substrate removal kinetics have commonly assumed that the organic matter is dissolved, and do not include an identification of the fraction of the total COD (TCOD) that is truly dissolved (DCOD), nor the fraction that is particulate COD (PCOD). Recognizing that not all the COD in wastewater is dissolved, recent research efforts have concentrated on modeling the hydrolysis of particulate organic matter once it is trapped in the biological floc particles. However, little effort has been made in identifying how the particulate matter is actually removed form the liquid phase. Research performed at the University of New Orleans experimental station at Marrero, Louisiana, USA, has revealed that most of the TCOD in wastewater is PCOD, and that only 20% is DCOD. Therefore, biological flocculation must play an important role on PCOD removal. To ascertain this role, carefully controlled experiments were run using a 6 m3/d continuous flow ...

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Polyelectolytes on Biofilm Growth

This research focuses on determining the effect of synthetic and naturally produced polymers, used as surface conditioners, on the rate of biofilm attachment and growth. Partial success was obtained, and the only practical alternative seems to be to precondition the surface of the media by growing an easy-to-develop biological film before the final biofilm is induced to grow. This paper also reviews the literature which describes the factors affecting the attached growth of bacteria.

Research paper thumbnail of Physical Behavior of Flocculent Suspensions in Upflow

Journal of the Sanitary Engineering Division, 1971

The variation in concentration of flocculent particles in the sludge blanket of an upflow clarifi... more The variation in concentration of flocculent particles in the sludge blanket of an upflow clarifier or reactor is a function of the upflow velocity of the liquid. The nature of this functional relationship for discrete particles has been determined by others. The experimental work of this investigation demonstrates that the same general type of relationship applies to flocculent particles. The results should prove useful in the further investigation of the behavior of upflow units as physical-chemical reactors.

Research paper thumbnail of Kinetics of growth and substrate uptake in a biological film system

Applied and environmental microbiology, 1976

The rates of growth and substrate uptake in a biological film continuous-flow reactor were studie... more The rates of growth and substrate uptake in a biological film continuous-flow reactor were studied. The experiments were performed with high fluid velocities to bring the reactor operation to the reaction-controlled regime, thus avoiding external diffusional resistances. The glucose uptake experiments were performed with small film thicknesses so that full substrate penetration within the entire film thickness could be obtained. In this way, the catalyst effectiveness factor was 1.0 and the observed rate was the true, or intrinsic, rate. The results of the experiments indicate that both the intrinsic rate of substrate uptake and the rate of film growth are independent of the substrate concentration remaining in the reactor (zero-order reactions). However, the value of the initial substrate concentration when the film is in the early stages of growth defines the magnitude of both the rate of uptake and growth. This effect of the initial substrate concentration follows a saturation-fu...

The usual prerequisites for such courses are an introductory environmental engineering course and a first
course in fluid mechanics. Senior civil/environmental engineering students taking Design of Water Supply and Wastewater Collection Systems are also expected to have a basic understanding of statistics and a good handling of Microsoft Excel.
This book includes the class notes the author has used for more than 40 years of teaching this course, as well as the detailed solution of about 130 solved practical design problems, which emphasize the application of Microsoft Excel tools, such as Solver, Goal Seek and the NORMDIST function, for the solution of simultaneous non-linear equations and non-linear
regression analysis problems frequently encountered in the field.
Each chapter includes a bullet summary of the main topics covered, followed by solved examples, some of which address design issues encountered in the field.
