Handbook of Organizational Creativity is designed to explain creativity and innovation in organizations. This handbook contains 28 chapters dedicated to particularly complex phenomena, all written by leading experts in the field of organizational creativity. The format of the book follows the multi-level structure of creativity in organizations where creativity takes place at the individual level, the group level, and the organizational level. Beyond just theoretical frameworks, applications and interventions are also emphasized. This topic will be of particular interest to managers of creative personnel, and managers that see the potential benefit of creativity to their organizations.https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/facultybooks/1081/thumbnail.jp

Murdock, and Marie Mance (2007). The introduction and opening chapter provide the overarching theme of the book, which is to connect the constructs of creativity and leadership and to make a case why the two go hand-in-hand. Both constructs involve dealing with change. The main focus of the book is the creative problem solving (CPS) approach to generating optimal problem solutions. Much of the book is spent illustrating the benefits of applying divergent and convergent thinking skills to each of the six process steps in the CPS model. The book is an easy, enjoyable read with plenty of empirical support for many of the propositions and tenets put forth. Puccio, Murdock, and Mance do a good job of pointing out that creative leadership is not just for the chosen few, but rather can be practiced by anyone. Plenty of practical advice is offered with numerous real-world examples. The book is a goo...

New skills will be required to create and adopt new technology and working methods. Additionally, cognitive skills, particularly creative problem-solving, will be highly sought after. The future of work paradigm has threatened many occupations but bolstered others such as engineering. Engineers must keep up to date with the technological and cognitive demands brought on by the future of work. Using an exploratory mixed-methods approach, our study sought to make sense of how engineers understand and use creative problem solving. We found significant associations between engineers’ implicit knowledge of creativity, exemplified creative problem solving, and the perceived value of creativity. We considered that the work environment is a potential facilitator of creative problem-solving. We used an innovative exceptional cases analysis and found that the highest functioning engineers in terms of knowledge, sk...

Results revealed that proteges who perceived their values to be similar to those of their mentor had more mentoring success. Mentoring success correlated with more positive organizational outcomes. Finally, it was found that mentoring success mediated between perceived value similarity and important organizational outcomes (job satisfaction and organizational commitment).

We compared collective impact and the formal definition of collaboration and made integrations between the two concepts. Specifically, we explored effective assessment and facilitation methods and applied them to collective impact initiatives in order to facilitate more purposeful implementation of collective impact. We concluded that collective impact is a specific form of collaboration.

A critical success factor for community crowdsourcing is to attract online volunteer crowdsourcing users and engage their interest besides extrinsic motivators like monetary rewards. Our study examines determinants of participant engagement in online crowdsourcing communities, specifically motivation to contribute, personal interest in topic, and goal clarity. The results provide strong support for (a) the positive relationship between an individual's motivation to contribute towards a task and their engagement towards that task; (b) the positive relationship of a person's interest in the topic and their motivation to contribute; and (c) the partial mediating role of motivation to contribute. No significant effect was found for the hypothesis that clearer goals resulted in higher engagement since they led to a higher motivation to contribute when there was an inherent personal interest towards the topic.

Limited attention has been given in the literature to the processes that take place before and after idea generation. In this study, we seek to partially fill this gap by examining the processes that take place after idea generation, that is, idea evaluation and selection. Specifically, we evaluate the role of providing instructions and structure for idea evaluation (in the form of definitions and rubrics) and idea selection (by creating a two-step procedure) on the accuracy of evaluation and ultimate idea selection. We examine the impact of the level of specificity and detail provided in the evaluation process on the accuracy of team evaluation and selection of creative solutions. We also examine how structured and unstructured selection processes influence the selection of creative solutions. Our findings suggest that having a rubric to support evaluating quality and originality does not necessarily increase the accuracy of team evaluation. Further, following an iterative solution selection process results in the selection of lower quality solutions, but having instructions and structure during both evaluation and selection processes results in selection of most original ideas. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed.

Much of what we know about teams and teamwork comes from research using short-term student teams in the lab, teams in larger organizations, and, more recently, teams in rather unique and extreme environments. The context in which teams operate influences team composition, processes, and effectiveness. Small organizations are an understudied and often overlooked context that presents a rich opportunity to augment our understanding of teams and team dynamics. In this paper, we discuss how teams and multi-team systems in small organizations may differ from those found in larger organizations. Many of these differences present both methodological and practical challenges to studying team composition and processes in small complex organizational settings. We advocate for applying and accepting new and less widely used methodological approaches to advance our understanding of the science of teams and teamwork in such c...
