Menghadapi berbagai tantangan global, Bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu bekal yang harus dimiliki... more Menghadapi berbagai tantangan global, Bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu bekal yang harus dimiliki oleh generasi muda baik saat menjadi mahasiswa maupun setelah menyelesaikan perkuliahan. Orientasi pembekalan Bahasa Inggris bagi mahasiswa perlu direformulasi untuk memberikan nilai tambah bagi mahasiswa dan lulusan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan rekonstruksi perkuliahan Bahasa Inggris PS Farmasi Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Mataram. Penelitian analisis kebutuhan dan rekomendasi pembelajaran ini menerapkan protocol Needs Analysis oleh Hutchinson & Waters (2010) dan Dudley-Evans & St. John (1998) dengan melibatkan mahasiswa, dosen, pemangku kepentingan di tingkat fakultas dan prodi. Data dikumpulkan dengan teknik triangulasi (test, kuesioner, wawancara, dan documenter) dan dianalisis secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Hasil analisis menunjukan (1) kemampuan awal bahasa Inggris mahasiswa sangat bervariasi dengan rerata 386 dan rentangan 313 -513 pada skor TOEFL; (2) tuntutan Bahasa Inggris sangat tinggi yaitu membaca referensi berbahasa Inggris, pesyaratan kelulusan TOEFL (450), dan antisipasi tuntutan persaingan kerja and pengembangan diri. Disarankan, penyelesaian Bahasa Inggris di PSF FK harus diatasi dengan berbagai upaya. Rancangan perkuliahan Bahasa Inggris dilakukan secara bauran (blended) dengan rancangan menggunakan Whole-Part-Whole Model dan diajarkan dengan Project-Based Learning untuk memberikan pembelajaran optimal.

Reading is an essential skill in the English language as it significantly impacts learning and fa... more Reading is an essential skill in the English language as it significantly impacts learning and facilitates the exploration of information. It enables us to acquire new knowledge, and broaden our perspectives, Grabe & Stoller (2013) contend that reading is a complex and dynamic process that involves considering, understanding, translating, analyzing, and discovering knowledge. Students often encounter multiple challenges when learning reading comprehension, such as limited vocabulary, inadequate time to comprehend the material, and disinterest in the teaching methods employed by educators, so this study aimed to investigate whether the use of a webtoon application as a medium has a significant effect on the achievement scores of second-grade students in literal reading comprehension. The research method used in this study is quantitative, and the researcher conducted a quasiexperimental study to investigate the impact of using Webtoon media in the teaching process. The treatment provided to the experimental group, which received instruction with the use of Webtoon media, while the control group did not receive any special treatment. The results of the study indicated that there was a noticeable difference in the pre-test and post-test scores, with an increase in the mean score from 60.46 to 73.86. Therefore, it was found that webtoon application is effective in teaching reading to improve reading skills, especially students' reading comprehension. The significant effect implies that when the material was presented through the Webtoon application, students became more engrossed in the content, leading to better comprehension of the text.

Learning more about grammar will help students produce better sentences while speaking and writing. For this reason, this article introduces different ways of teaching grammar. This research aimed to analyze the design and implementation of Blended Learning in Basic English Grammar classes. This research used mixed methods. The subject in this research was the students from the 1 st semester English department of the University of Mataram and the lecturer who taught Basic English Grammar using Blended Learning. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The results of this study showed that the design of Blended Learning using ICARE as a model of learning in Basic English Grammar for 1st-semester students is great. The students give positive and negative responses toward the use of blended learning. Furthermore, the student's achievement in Basic English Grammar showed a positive impact. Where the student's average score on the mid-test was (67.36%). While on the final test was (75.49%). To sum up, implementing blended learning is successful and positively impacts student's achievement in Basic English Grammar.

The Faculty of Medicine, the University of Mataram, Indonesia, renewed its curriculum to teach En... more The Faculty of Medicine, the University of Mataram, Indonesia, renewed its curriculum to teach English to aide Indonesian university graduates to enter the competitive international job markets. Adopting this new curriculum will affect the provision of teaching and learning activities. This paper attempts to justify whether the use of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) would fit within the current English curriculum. A comprehensive review of a literature was conducted to identify barriers and facilitators for the implementation of CLIL in higher education settings. Results of the literature review were then used to evaluate the potential strengths and limitations of the recently renewed curriculum when implemented at the Faculty of Medicine. Availing of curriculum and learning materials has the potential to sustain CLIL implementation in the Faculty of Medicine. However, factors that may impinge the successful implementation include: lecturers' language, content pedagogical competences and the need to employ differentiated instructional modules. An ongoing professional development for lecturers prior to curriculum implementation could address these limitations.

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakan (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk membekali guru dan mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dalam mengembangkan 'content" pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dalam akun Google Classroom. Khalayak sasaran strategis dari kegiatan ini adalah guru Bahasa Inggris SMP/SMA/SMK sederajat Kota Mataram dan mahasiswa PS Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris yang sedang mengembangkan penelitian Blended Learning dan mahasiswa yang sedang menempuh mata kuliah Teaching Media. Kegiatan dilaksanakan dengan metode diskusi, praktik di kelas, dan pendampingan pengembangan yang dipandu oleh 4 orang dosen dari PS pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP UNRAM. Dari pelaksanaan kegiatan dapat disimpulkan antara lain (1) kegiatan PKM telah berjalan sesuai dengan perencanaan dengan melibatkan 20 orang guru dan mahasiwa dan difasilitasi oleh 4 orang tim pengabdian, (2) khalayak sasaran telah mampu mengisi konten GC mata kuliah masing-masing, dan (3) khalayak sasaran telah memiliki pengetahuan tentang pemanfaatan Google Forms dalam menunjang pembelajaran dan survei.

Kegiatan ini merupakan bentuk pengabdian dan aplikasi keilmuan pada masyarakat khususnya warga FKIP universitas Mataram. Pengarsipan merupakan hal penting dalam menyimpanan dokumen sehingga memudahkan dalam proses pencarian dan penelusuran kembali data yang telah disimpan. Kegiatan ini terdiri dari pembuatan aplikasi online menggunakan PHP dan database MySQL, dan pelatihan penggunaan aplikasi pada tenaga admin di setiap unit FKIP. Secara keseluruhan kegiatan ini berjalan dengan baik dan tenaga admin berhasil melakukan input data pengarsipan berbasis website

(b) Menemukan kebutuhan Bahasa Inggris yang diharapkan oleh mahasiswa Prodi Hubungan Internasional. (c) Menemukan kebutuhan Bahasa Inggris yang diharapkan oleh dosen Bahasa Inggris dan dosen Spesialis Prodi Hubungan Internasional. (d). Membuat rekomendasi pengajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk Prodi Hubungan Internasional. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode Deskriptif. Penelitian ini diadakan di Program Studi Hubungan Internasional Universitas Mataram dan ditentukannya sample dengan menggunakan purposive sampling. Unit analisis dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa dengan total 43 orang dan dosen dengan total 2 orang. Berdasarkan penelitian yang telah dilakukan, dapat disimpulkan sebagai berikut: (a) Kemampuan awal mahasiswa yang diukur menggunakan tes ECSCS diketahui bahwa kemampuan awal mahasiswa berada pada level Pre-Intermediate dengan rata-rata skor 73.07. (b) Kebutuhan Bahasa Inggris yang diharapkan mahasiswa Prodi Hubungan Internasional adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara secara aktif dalam Bahasa Inggris. (c) Kebutuhan Bahasa Inggris yang diharapkan dosen Bahasa Inggris dan dosen spesialis di Prodi Hubungan Internasional dapat dibagi menjadi dua katagori, yaitu: tujuan jangka pendek untuk mempersiapkan mahasiswa menjadi seorang mahasiswa dan tujuan jangka panjang untuk mendapatkan pekerjaan. (d) Berdasarkan hasil menurut keadaan dari mahasiswa dan pembelajaran di Prodi Hubungan Internasional, maka dapat direkomendasika empat desain pengajaran dengan materi dan teknik pengajaran yang sesuai dengan kondisi serta kebutuhan mahasiswa.

The data of lecturer were collected by using questionnaire and interviews 25 junior high school English teachers in MGMP (Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran) Bahasa Inggris Kota Mataram. The data were descriptively analyst by identifying, classifying, describing, explaining, the challenges and opportunities. The study found that time, academic writing skill, motivation, confidence, and supporting facilities an responsible to lack of academic publication amount English teachers. Nonetheless, opportunities is result from teachers in developing self in personal skill, writing skill, and skill in accessing academic resources for people wring in academic publication.

Responding to students' low-ranking achievements in the Program for International Student Ass... more Responding to students' low-ranking achievements in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), Minister of Education and Culture of Indonesia introduced a School Literacy Movement (SLM) to schools in an effort to improve students' reading competence. Despite such an effort, the implementation of SLM in schools still undergoes hurdles. The present study aims to (a) investigate how SLM is implemented in junior high schools in West Lombok Regency; (b) identify the good practice of SLM; (c) promote models of evaluation that supports the implementation of SLM. The research employed a qualitative research method. Data were collected through interviews, observations and questionnaires from 10 junior high state schools in West Lombok Regency. The high demand for English does not correspond to the current teaching and learning situations. This article aims to provide recommendations for the improvement of students' English proficiency at the Faculty. The data for recommendations were taken from the analysis from previous studies involving students, lecturers, documents (SKDI/Competency Standards of Indonesian Medical Doctors, the Profile of Faculty of Medicine). From the analysis of all documents, it is recommended that the Faculty (1) reconsider the policy of teaching English from a block system to a semester system to provide more input; (2) apply CLIL (content and language integrated learning) model by involving subject specialists in the block system; (3) provide online learning or online clinic for English consultation to facilitate students on their self-access language learning (SALL); (4) give exemptions to students with high scores on English proficiency tests (TOEFL, IELTS, or other recognized English proficiency tests).

Berbagai kendala dihadapi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMPN 14 Mataram yang disebabkan ol... more Berbagai kendala dihadapi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMPN 14 Mataram yang disebabkan oleh rentangan perbedaan sosial, ekonomi, motivasi, intelektual peserta didik. Kegiatan penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan partisipasi, kolaborasi, dan komunikasi peserta didik dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan menerapkan Flipped Learning Model (FLM). Penelitian tindakan kelas ini dilakukan secara kolaboratif antara guru mitra dan dosen LPTK di kelas IXA SMPN 14 Mataram, Lombok, yang terdiri dari 34 siswa. Penelitian dilaksanakan dalam 2 siklus, masing-masing siklus menerapkan langkah-langkah kegiatan Lesson Study for Learning Community (LSLC) yang terdiri dari Plan, Do, See, dan Redesign. Data dikumpulkan dengan triangulasi teknik (observasi dan refleksi, dokumentasi, dan asesment). Dari kegiatan pembelajaran yang dilaksanakan sebanyak 2 siklus, disimpulkan bahwa dengan diterapkan FLM dalam pembelajaran, peserta didik lebih siap dalam belajar dengan penugasan membaca dan menyimak materi sebelum pembelajaran. Dengan pemberian modal dan model sebelum pembelajaran, peserta didik lebih siap berkolaborasi dan berkomunikasi. Hasil penilaian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan prestasi pembelajaran dari siklus 1 ke siklus 2. Dari rata-rata hasil 79,35 menjadi 82,50 dengan peningkatan ketuntasan KKM secara klasikal dari 74,53% menjadi 91,17%.

The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The results of this study showed that the design of Blended Learning using ICARE as a model of learning in Basic English Grammar for 1st-semester students is great. The students give positive and negative responses toward the use of blended learning. Furthermore, the student's achievement in Basic English Grammar showed a positive impact. Where the student's average score on the mid-test was (67.36%). While on the final test was (75.49%). To sum up, implementing blended learning is successful and positively impacts student's achievement in Basic English Grammar.

The Faculty of Medicine, the University of Mataram, Indonesia, renewed its curriculum to teach En... more The Faculty of Medicine, the University of Mataram, Indonesia, renewed its curriculum to teach English to aide Indonesian university graduates to enter the competitive international job markets. Adopting this new curriculum will affect the provision of teaching and learning activities. This paper attempts to justify whether the use of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) would fit within the current English curriculum. A comprehensive review of a literature was conducted to identify barriers and facilitators for the implementation of CLIL in higher education settings. Results of the literature review were then used to evaluate the potential strengths and limitations of the recently renewed curriculum when implemented at the Faculty of Medicine. Availing of curriculum and learning materials has the potential to sustain CLIL implementation in the Faculty of Medicine. However, factors that may impinge the successful implementation include: lecturers' language, content pedagogical competences and the need to employ differentiated instructional modules. An ongoing professional development for lecturers prior to curriculum implementation could address these limitations.

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakan (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk membekali guru dan mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dalam mengembangkan 'content" pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dalam akun Google Classroom. Khalayak sasaran strategis dari kegiatan ini adalah guru Bahasa Inggris SMP/SMA/SMK sederajat Kota Mataram dan mahasiswa PS Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris yang sedang mengembangkan penelitian Blended Learning dan mahasiswa yang sedang menempuh mata kuliah Teaching Media. Kegiatan dilaksanakan dengan metode diskusi, praktik di kelas, dan pendampingan pengembangan yang dipandu oleh 4 orang dosen dari PS pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP UNRAM. Dari pelaksanaan kegiatan dapat disimpulkan antara lain (1) kegiatan PKM telah berjalan sesuai dengan perencanaan dengan melibatkan 20 orang guru dan mahasiwa dan difasilitasi oleh 4 orang tim pengabdian, (2) khalayak sasaran telah mampu mengisi konten GC mata kuliah masing-masing, dan (3) khalayak sasaran telah memiliki pengetahuan tentang pemanfaatan Google Forms dalam menunjang pembelajaran dan survei.

Pengarsipan merupakan hal penting dalam menyimpanan dokumen sehingga memudahkan dalam proses pencarian dan penelusuran kembali data yang telah disimpan. Kegiatan ini terdiri dari pembuatan aplikasi online menggunakan PHP dan database MySQL, dan pelatihan penggunaan aplikasi pada tenaga admin di setiap unit FKIP. (b) Menemukan kebutuhan Bahasa Inggris yang diharapkan oleh mahasiswa Prodi Hubungan Internasional. (c) Menemukan kebutuhan Bahasa Inggris yang diharapkan oleh dosen Bahasa Inggris dan dosen Spesialis Prodi Hubungan Internasional. (d). Membuat rekomendasi pengajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk Prodi Hubungan Internasional. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode Deskriptif. Penelitian ini diadakan di Program Studi Hubungan Internasional Universitas Mataram dan ditentukannya sample dengan menggunakan purposive sampling. Unit analisis dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa dengan total 43 orang dan dosen dengan total 2 orang. Berdasarkan penelitian yang telah dilakukan, dapat disimpulkan sebagai berikut: (a) Kemampuan awal mahasiswa yang diukur menggunakan tes ECSCS diketahui bahwa kemampuan awal mahasiswa berada pada level Pre-Intermediate dengan rata-rata skor 73.07. (b) Kebutuhan Bahasa Inggris yang diharapkan mahasiswa Prodi Hubungan Internasional adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara secara aktif dalam Bahasa Inggris. (c) Kebutuhan Bahasa Inggris yang diharapkan dosen Bahasa Inggris dan dosen spesialis di Prodi Hubungan Internasional dapat dibagi menjadi dua katagori, yaitu: tujuan jangka pendek untuk mempersiapkan mahasiswa menjadi seorang mahasiswa dan tujuan jangka panjang untuk mendapatkan pekerjaan. (d) Berdasarkan hasil menurut keadaan dari mahasiswa dan pembelajaran di Prodi Hubungan Internasional, maka dapat direkomendasika empat desain pengajaran dengan materi dan teknik pengajaran yang sesuai dengan kondisi serta kebutuhan mahasiswa.

The data were descriptively analyst by identifying, classifying, describing, explaining, the challenges and opportunities. The study found that time, academic writing skill, motivation, confidence, and supporting facilities an responsible to lack of academic publication amount English teachers. Nonetheless, opportunities is result from teachers in developing self in personal skill, writing skill, and skill in accessing academic resources for people wring in academic publication.

The present study aims to (a) investigate how SLM is implemented in junior high schools in West Lombok Regency; (b) identify the good practice of SLM; (c) promote models of evaluation that supports the implementation of SLM. The high demand for English does not correspond to the current teaching and learning situations. This article aims to provide recommendations for the improvement of students' English proficiency at the Faculty. The data for recommendations were taken from the analysis from previous studies involving students, lecturers, documents (SKDI/Competency Standards of Indonesian Medical Doctors, the Profile of Faculty of Medicine). From the analysis of all documents, it is recommended that the Faculty (1) reconsider the policy of teaching English from a block system to a semester system to provide more input; (2) apply CLIL (content and language integrated learning) model by involving subject specialists in the block system; (3) provide online learning or online clinic for English consultation to facilitate students on their self-access language learning (SALL); (4) give exemptions to students with high scores on English proficiency tests (TOEFL, IELTS, or other recognized English proficiency tests).

Berbagai kendala dihadapi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMPN 14 Mataram yang disebabkan ol... more Berbagai kendala dihadapi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMPN 14 Mataram yang disebabkan oleh rentangan perbedaan sosial, ekonomi, motivasi, intelektual peserta didik. Kegiatan penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan partisipasi, kolaborasi, dan komunikasi peserta didik dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan menerapkan Flipped Learning Model (FLM). Penelitian tindakan kelas ini dilakukan secara kolaboratif antara guru mitra dan dosen LPTK di kelas IXA SMPN 14 Mataram, Lombok, yang terdiri dari 34 siswa. Penelitian dilaksanakan dalam 2 siklus, masing-masing siklus menerapkan langkah-langkah kegiatan Lesson Study for Learning Community (LSLC) yang terdiri dari Plan, Do, See, dan Redesign. Data dikumpulkan dengan triangulasi teknik (observasi dan refleksi, dokumentasi, dan asesment). Dari kegiatan pembelajaran yang dilaksanakan sebanyak 2 siklus, disimpulkan bahwa dengan diterapkan FLM dalam pembelajaran, peserta didik lebih siap dalam belajar dengan penugasan membaca dan menyimak materi sebelum pembelajaran. Dengan pemberian modal dan model sebelum pembelajaran, peserta didik lebih siap berkolaborasi dan berkomunikasi. Hasil penilaian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan prestasi pembelajaran dari siklus 1 ke siklus 2. Dari rata-rata hasil 79,35 menjadi 82,50 dengan peningkatan ketuntasan KKM secara klasikal dari 74,53% menjadi 91,17%.

The materials covered include Kinds and Aspects of Sentences, Review of Tenses and Modals, Nouns Pronouns and Determiners, Subject-Verb Agreements, Compound Sentences, and Direct & Indirect Questions and are analyzed and discussed at various levels: phrase, clause and sentence. Teaching English using an ESP approach seems preferable in current ELT due to its efficiency and effectiveness in imparting learning. However, designing ELT using the ESP approach is not an easy job. The conflicts often happen after collecting data of needs – necessities, lacks in terms of starting points and the gap between the level of English and the target needs. This article deals with the problems in designing the teaching of English using an ESP approach at higher education in Indonesia in terms of the necessities, lacks, wants, gaps of necessities and level of English. The data are collected from 313 students from Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Economics the University of Mataram using triangulation techniques --- test, questionnaire, interview, FGD, and documentary and then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. From the analysis, it is concluded that conflicts among needs in designing teaching English using an ESP approach at the University of Mataram, caused by big gaps between the necessities and students’ lacks (current level of English). The situation becomes even worse because of the limited number of credits, the number of students in a class and some other factors.

The ultimate goal of teaching “MKDK” English at non-English departments is to prepare students to be able to understand textbooks written in English on their own field. To be able to do this, students must have various reading skills such as note-taking, evaluating, memorizing (retaining) information, summarizing, and other reading skills needed in academic contexts. The teaching and leaning process should, therefore, be directed to the proficiency of such skills. Through English subject the students are expected to be able to improve “learning how-to-learn” skills. It is necessary, then, to review the current practices of teaching reading at non-English departments. Have the materials and classroom activities represented the expectation of reading in academic contexts? Have the materials and classroom activities managed to improve students’ language skills and impart learning how-to-learn skills? This paper provides suggestion to redesign/re-orientate the materials and class activities to achieve both improvement of language skills and skills in learning-how-to-learn.
