Innovations in financial business models driven by technology do not only involve changes in financial services delivering, but also changes in market, regulation, industrial networks, dominant players, and culture. The work adopts a multi-level perspective on financial technology transitions. Based on a literature review, the socio-technical landscape, regime, and niche levels are elaborated. The paper contributes with a new framework on financial technology transitions that may be used as an analytical tool to elaborate on future transformations in the sector and to customize for national-level studies.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the adoption of an Activity-Based Costing (ABC) syste... more The purpose of this paper is to investigate the adoption of an Activity-Based Costing (ABC) system to provide relevant cost information for enterprises in the business of building and selling Internet of Things (IoT) based products. The research is constructed over the relevant themes identified in previous research about ABC. An important issue that emerges from the analysis is that cost is a function of the volume of production and this notion of production does not represent the source of value generation discussed in this work. A functioning of a smart and connected product requires a cloud-based system for operating and monitoring it throughout its life. The implication of collecting and processing data is that costs essentially changes depending on the volume of data stored and the complexity of intended analytics that would require more qualified analysts. The estimation of costs related to data analytics and products' monitoring serve as a reference to forecast future expending during the lifetime of products. This research is the first to provide a theoretical discussion on ABC assumptions in the context of IoT business models.

Además, permite a las instituciones atender a un mayor número de alumnos y ofrecer cursos híbri-dos o totalmente a distancia. El uso de Internet en la educación ha dado lugar a la modalidad de educación-mentar los recursos necesarios para su desarrollo. La información sobre los costos derivados del desarrollo de proyectos de e-learning basada en análisis rigurosos es escasa. En este trabajo, se describen los recursos institucionales necesarios para el desarrollo y entrega de cursos basados en e-learning y se determinan los costos de cada uno de ellos. La metodología para determinar los factores de costos se basa en un análisis de la literatura, y entrevistas a expertos. El análisis de costos se basa en la teoría general del costo. Como descripción detallada del análisis de costos sea de utilidad para futuras evaluaciones de esta modalidad de educación y constituya una herramienta de apoyo para la toma de decisiones en el ámbito de la educación universitaria.

The transformation presents challenges at several levels and Project Management is not an exception. There are changes in the project environment, the power structures, capabilities, skills and standard practices, just to name a few. Considering the eventual obsolescence of many Project Portfolio Management practices, the aim of this chapter is to discuss the influence of Internet of Things in this discipline. The analysis departs from Rethinking Project Management insights and describes the impact of smart and connected products considering many dimensions. Recommendations for each PPM stage are developed, followed by a brief discussion of future research directions.

One of the major obstacles to achieving strategy alignment is that organizations find extremely difficult to link and quantify the IT investments benefits with strategic goals. The aim of this paper is to define an approach to assess portfolio-strategy alignment. To this end a formal specification of Kaplan and Norton Strategy Map is developed utilizing Unified Modeling Language (UML). The approach uses the Strategy Map as a framework for defining the portfolio value contribution and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used as the methodology for measuring efficiency of project portfolios.

Sustainability was adopted by many companies through their mission statement and strategy. Howeve... more Sustainability was adopted by many companies through their mission statement and strategy. However, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability are difficult to incorporate in programs and projects. The purpose of this work is to develop a framework to help ensure that an organization is working on the right projects to attain its business strategy and stakeholders demands. The proposal addresses both the portfolio selection problem and the project tracking phase. The portfolio selection allows selecting the better mix of projects based on the simultaneous analysis of eco-impacts and contribution to organizational goals. Once a portfolio is selected, monitoring aims to control project realization and decide on adjustments arisen from deviations from initial estimations. Both selection and monitoring are modeled as an optimization problem. The authors believe that this conceptual framework has a good potential for integrating sustainability and project management in operational terms.

The purpose of this article is to review Project Management contributions that integrate sustainability issues with a managerial focus. A conceptual framework that integrates the project management, managerial and sustainable development fields provides a structure to the survey. The results show a lack of research contributing with methods or frameworks that discusses how project management should support an organization´s strategy and sustainability. The paper provides a contribution to researchers interested in project management concentrate their efforts to ensure project governance that integrates sustainability issues with management focus.

This paper compares Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach... more This paper compares Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approaches for monitoring projects, in order to determine their performance in terms of economic, environmental and social organizational goals. This work is founded on an existing methodology to select and monitor projects based on DEA, and discusses modifications and additions arising from using AHP. The proposal is applied to a real case. The results indicate that AHP constitutes an insightful approach in situations requiring a modelling of managerial preferences regarding the relative importance of organizational goals.

Se utiliza una metodología basada en el estudio de casos que considera redes construidas a partir de contactos profesionales en LinkedIn; de colaboración científica entre la academia y la industria; y la conducta en redes más generalistas como las generadas a partir de una Fan Page de Facebook. Los resultados permiten apreciar las conexiones entre los ámbitos académico, productivo y de gobierno y resultan de interés para investigadores, administradores de incubadoras, y emprendedores. Así asistiéndolos en la construcción de redes virtuales como herramienta intercambio de conocimiento con colegas.

Desde el área de marketing existe un interés por identificar individuos que puedan tener influencia para promocionar sus productos o servicios. El objetivo de este trabajo de investigación es presentar un método para identificar usuarios influyentes en una Fan Page de Facebook. La propuesta está basada en los trabajos de Khobzi y Teimourpour (2015) y Weng y Lento (2014) y considera aspectos pragmáticos derivados de las restricciones en el acceso a datos privados. Se describe un caso real. Los resultados permiten identificar segmentos de usuarios y el interés de diferentes tópicos. Esta investigación es relevante para los administradores de una Fan Page y para el área de marketing de organizaciones con una presencia en los medios sociales.

Se considera el caso de redes dirigidas a comunidades interesadas en emprendedurismo y de influencia en la ciudad de Bahía Blanca. Los resultados evidencian que existe una oportunidad de mejorar la utilización de Facebook como medio de difusión de información y generar una comunidad de usuarios más amplia. La red basada en un perfil en LinkedIn asociado al Polo Tecnológico refleja una estructura propicia para difundir información entre los sectores académico, gubernamental y productivo.

Introducción: El objetivo del trabajo es efectuar un análisis descriptivo de la colaboración cien... more Introducción: El objetivo del trabajo es efectuar un análisis descriptivo de la colaboración científica en base al análisis de coautorías y la difusión de conocimiento a través de las citaciones obtenidas por una publicación. Se considera el caso de una universidad nacional en el campo de la ingeniería eléctrica. Metodología: La metodología se basa en el análisis de redes de coautorías en términos de relaciones entre la academia, el sector productivo y el gobierno; las instituciones involucradas, y el alcance geográfico. Asimismo, se realiza un análisis estadístico de los datos y se calculan indicadores del modelo de la Triple Hélice. Resultados: Los resultados reflejan que los vínculos entre las instituciones académicas, el gobierno y el sector productivo resultan aún débiles. Por otro lado, la relación bilateral academia y gobierno denota gran colaboración. El alto porcentaje de publicaciones en coautoría con investigadores que registran afiliaciones en diferentes países indica que la proximidad de los autores no restringe la posibilidad de colaboración. Finalmente, se observa una notable difusión internacional de los trabajos. Conclusiones: El trabajo constituye una primera exploración de la colaboración científica. Como trabajo futuro se propone enriquecer el análisis utilizando otras fuentes de datos, y extenderlo a otros departamentos académicos.

La metodología de la investigación se basa en el estudio de casos múltiples e incluye una revisión de la literatura, la realización de cuestionarios con integrantes de organizaciones que se desempeñan en el área de servicios, el análisis de redes sociales elaboradas a partir de la Fan Page de Facebook y los perfiles de LinkedIn. Como resultado del análisis de casos se observa un limitado uso de las redes sociales. Así, Facebook registra una actividad frecuente para el caso de organizaciones gubernamentales y académicas; LinkedIn es utilizado a nivel personal pero no institucional. Finalmente, excepto para un caso vinculado también con el sector productivo, aquellos que utilizan LinkedIn no evidencian que la red constituya un canal importante de transferencia y absorción de información y no muestran convencimiento con respecto a la contribución de las redes sociales en el éxito futuro de la organización.

It is estimated that around 1.6 million people die each year from tuberculosis. In Argentina there are more the 10.000 new cases and affects the population of both sexes and all ages. The objective of this work is to adapt the theoretical model of tuberculosis dynamics proposed by Feng (2000), to calibrate using data from Argentina, and to analyze the trend of tuberculosis in the next fifteen years. Numerical results are supported with a theoretical analysis.

The international standard for tuberculosis control is the World Health Organization's DOT (Direct Observation of Therapy) strategy aimed at reducing the transmission of the infection through prompt diagnosis and effective treatment. The treatment is based on the strict supervision of medicines intake. This is made possible thanks to the availability of an information system that records patient data. These data can be used at a health post level to monitor treatment outcomes, at a district level to identify local problems as they arise, and at a provincial or national level to ensure consistent high-quality tuberculosis control across geographical areas (World Health Organization, 2007b). In Argentina, the Ministry of Health has been gathering DOTS data since 1996. Data analysis is vital for decision making. In this work, we provide a complete description of a data warehouse and reporting tools for decision support related to tuberculosis treatment.

En la República Argentina no existen censos recientes que provean datos para evaluar el estado sanitario, los costos de atención al diabético, y, más aún cuantificar el impacto de campañas de detección temprana. En este trabajo se implementa una herramienta basada en simulación dinámica que permite analizar la tendencia de la tasa de prevalencia bajo diferentes estrategias de prevención.

Recent research on the impact of DOTS programs for tuberculosis control suggest that, after several years of successful implementation, the incidence is not decreasing as expected. Globally and in most regions, the prevalence and mortality decay, but not quickly enough to achieve the Millennium goals set by the WHO. Many socio-economic determinants and the exposure of the population to risk factors have a major impact on the incidence of tuberculosis. The aim of this paper is to develop a conceptual model based on the dynamics of the tuberculosis epidemiology and its relationship to socio-economic determinants and risk factors. The model will aid in understanding the causes of undesired behavior and designing new policies to eliminate or mitigate them. The work includes results of simulations and projections for Jujuy region of Argentina.

La organización trabaja con más de 800 proveedores y tiene más de 15.000 referencias activas diferentes. La metodología sigue tres fases principales, a saber: análisis de contexto; definición y modelado de criterios; y síntesis de resultados basada en el método Proceso Jerárquico Analítico. La definición de los criterios se basa en un extenso análisis de la literatura y de entrevistas a personal. Los modelos fueron validados en el contexto de la organización. El trabajo constituye una fuente de información y conocimiento para cualquier otra organización que desee emprender un proceso similar dado que se analizan y resuelven las dificultades que surgen en un caso real complejo.

To determine the position of each company with respect to its peers in the industry, it is proposed to define models based on Data Envelopment Analysis using measures related with each of the sustainability dimensions, that is, Economic, Environmental, Social and Strategy and profile. The models do not require a pre-defined set of measures, and hence their application is feasible in sustainability evaluations where the availability of homogeneous data is scarce. The proposal is applied using data of companies published by an international consultant and an interpretation of results is provided to analyze enterprises` performance and opportunities for improvement.

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) that implement an strategy based on electronic commerce... more Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) that implement an strategy based on electronic commerce need to transform the major business processes. If this transformation has a strong impact in the way work is done, organizations may be reluctant to change. The objective of this work is to describe an approach to implement an e-business strategy without destroying and disrupting the actual business. The approach suggest to assess the organization’s goals and activities before defining the e-business vision and objectives. Hence, it allows to define a usable e-business implementation strategy. The approach is based on collaborative work rather than traditional hierarchical project management. Then, people all around the organization gets involved in the project. We base the proposal on the work of Lientz and Rea [1]. We have adapted the approach to SME and we describe a full case study of a small organization in the tourism sector.

ways of assembling systems in a style of software construction similar to “LEGO blocks”. Software components are reusable building blocks for constructing software systems. Component-based development may greatly increase the productivity of software engineers and improve the quality of software. There are many issues related with components that are of wide interest both to academics and people from industry. One of them is the retrieval of components that will be assembled into a new system. It is difficult to decide whether an implementation fits on a predefined design. In this work, we consider the problem of assessing that the implementation of a concrete component is consistent with the specification of the desired functionality. We assume that the component source code is not available and we have a formal specification of the system of interest. We propose to perform a dynamic assessment using tests derived from the specification (semantic criteria) but executed using the implementation of the candidate component.

We describe how we tested an implementation of a temporal logical system, specifically an implementation of an extension (Cobo and Augusto, 2000) of the language Temporal Prolog (Gabbay, 1987). However, this testing approach generalizes to any system specified using a Hilbert model (i.e. a system described using a set of axioms and inference rules) and implemented as a Prolog program. Our approach allowed us to discover some errors in the program. Statecharts provide a powerful visual formalism to specify systems. Duration Calculus is a formal logic to specify and reason about temporal requeriments. In this work, we propose a description of statecharts semantics using Duration Calculus. Thus we build a common semantic model for Duration Calculus speci¯cations and statecharts. The formalization is done in two steps. First, the structure of a statechart is represented using Duration Calculus formula. Then, the semantics of the execution of a step is introduced.

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of System Dynamics modeling and to highligh... more The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of System Dynamics modeling and to highlight its potential as a tool for system´s understanding. Although the work is not intended to cover all the activities involved in a simulation process, we present the steps in the modeling process. We first summarize the role of Causal Loop diagrams in the modeling process. We then introduce Stock-and-flow diagrams and describe how they can be defined using mathematical functions. Along this chapter we claim that Systems Dynamics is an adequate modeling tool for “partially reducible uncertainty” and “irreducible uncertainty” problems. Finally, we discuss that in System Dynamics validity means adequacy with respect to a purpose, and hence it cannot be made in absolute terms and we briefly introduce a set of techniques for testing structure and accuracy.

Performance assessment is key to business management in any industry sector as it helps organizat... more Performance assessment is key to business management in any industry sector as it helps organizations to control, compare and even correct their performance. This paper proposes a model to evaluate the Argentine insurance sector, analyzing efficiency and relative productivity during the 2002-2011 period, using an efficient frontier technique known as Data Envelopment Analysis and the Malmquist Index. The results indicate that the market has not improved its productivity over the last ten years. One of the causes is attributed to the technological decline suffered in the period. Companies needed more resources to keep up their production, they have not invested in pursuit of improving their administrative and technological practices, or investments have not brought an increase in the volume of negotiated premiums.

This uncertainty has an enormous impact in the investment economic value. The variability of a software development project payoff can be represented by the volatility of the project value over the analyzed period. The aim of this work is to define a framework to estimate the volatility of IT investments that takes into account all relevant information that has impact on project value, and show how to use this volatility estimation in a real options analysis. The suggested method could help IT managers produce a well-structured valuation process in software development investment decision-making, and understand the interactions between software process, market environment, financial issues and options value in a clear way.

Introduccion: El objetivo del trabajo es efectuar un analisis descriptivo de la colaboracion cien... more Introduccion: El objetivo del trabajo es efectuar un analisis descriptivo de la colaboracion cientifica en base al analisis de coautorias y la difusion de conocimiento a traves de las citaciones obtenidas por una publicacion. Se considera el caso de una universidad nacional en el campo de la ingenieria electrica. Metodologia: La metodologia se basa en el analisis de redes de coautorias en terminos de relaciones entre la academia, el sector productivo y el gobierno; las instituciones involucradas, y el alcance geografico. Asimismo, se realiza un analisis estadistico de los datos y se calculan indicadores del modelo de la Triple Helice. Resultados: Los resultados reflejan que los vinculos entre las instituciones academicas, el gobierno y el sector productivo resultan aun debiles. Por otro lado, la relacion bilateral academia y gobierno denota gran colaboracion. Se considera el caso de redes dirigidas a comunidades interesadas en emprendedurismo y de influencia en la ciudad de Bahia Blanca. Los resultados evidencian que existe una oportunidad de mejorar la utilizacion de Facebook como medio de difusion de informacion y generar una comunidad de usuarios mas amplia. La red basada en un perfil en LinkedIn asociado al Polo Tecnologico refleja una estructura propicia para difundir informacion entre los sectores academico, gubernamental y productivo. Ademas, permite a las instituciones atender a un mayor numero de alumnos y ofrecer cursos hibridos o totalmente a distancia. El uso de Internet en la educacion ha dado lugar a la modalidad de educacion a distancia conocida como e-learning. Dados los beneficios esperados resulta necesario identificar y documentar los recursos necesarios para su desarrollo. La informacion sobre los costos derivados del desarrollo de proyectos de e-learning basada en analisis rigurosos es escasa. En este trabajo, se describen los recursos institucionales necesarios para el desarrollo y entrega de cursos basados en e-learning y se determinan los costos de cada uno de ellos. La evaluación del desempeño es algo importante en la gestión de empresas decualquier sector de la... more La evaluación del desempeño es algo importante en la gestión de empresas decualquier sector de la industria, porque de esta manera la organización es capaz decontrolar, comparar e incluso corregir su desempeño. Este trabajo propone un modelopara evaluar el sector asegurador argentino, analizando la eficiencia y productividadrelativa de las compañías de seguros durante el periodo 2002-2011, utilizando latécnica de frontera eficiente conocida como Análisis Envolvente de Datos y el Índicede Malmquist.Los resultados indican que en los últimos diez años el mercado no ha mejorado suproductividad. Una de las causas se atribuye al deterioro tecnológico sufrido en elperiodo. Las empresas necesitaron más recursos para seguir produciendo lo mismo, nohan invertido en pos de mejorar sus prácticas administrativas y tecnológicas, o biensus inversiones no se han traducido en un aumento en el nivel de primas negociadas.

Organizations are experiencing a transformation as a consequence of digital technologies such as ... more Organizations are experiencing a transformation as a consequence of digital technologies such as social, mobile, big data, cloud computing, and internet of things. The transformation presents challenges at several levels, and project management is not an exception. There are changes in the project environment, the power structures, capabilities, skills, and standard practices, just to name a few. Considering the eventual obsolescence of many project portfolio management practices, the aim of this chapter is to discuss the influence of internet of things in this discipline. The analysis departs from rethinking project management insights and describes the impact of smart and connected products considering many dimensions. Recommendations for each PPM stage are developed, followed by a brief discussion of future research directions.

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar la experiencia en el rediseño de los procesos de una bib... more El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar la experiencia en el rediseño de los procesos de una biblioteca popular en el municipio de Río Colorado (Argentina). El principal desafío está dado por desarrollar una solución que requiera una mínima inversión. La metodología de trabajo está basada en la recopilación de datos primarios mediante entrevistas a personal y a usuarios del servicio, análisis de documentos para obtener datos secundarios y observación directa. Se identifica como principal problema una concepción basada en el bibliotecario, el material de biblioteca y las operaciones, alejada de un paradigma centrado en las necesidades de los usuarios. Se diseñan nuevos procesos que aprovechan el soporte tecnológico de una plataforma gratuita para gestión de bibliotecas. La propuesta permite mejorar la eficiencia y la eficacia para aumentar la satisfacción de los socios. Recent research on the impact of DOTS programs for tuberculosis control suggest that, after several years of successful implementation, the incidence is not decreasing as expected. Globally and in most regions, the prevalence and mortality decay, but not quickly enough to achieve the Millennium goals set by the WHO. Many socio-economic determinants and the exposure of the population to risk factors have a major impact on the incidence of tuberculosis. The aim of this paper is to develop a conceptual model based on the dynamics of the tuberculosis epidemiology and its relationship to socio-economic determinants and risk factors. The model will aid in understanding the causes of undesired behavior and designing new policies to eliminate or mitigate them. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of System Dynamics modeling and to highligh... more The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of System Dynamics modeling and to highlight its potential as a tool for system´s understanding. Although the work is not intended to cover all the activities involved in a simulation process, the authors present the steps in the modeling process. The authors first summarize the role of Causal Loop diagrams in the modeling process. The authors then introduce Stock-and-flow diagrams and describe how they can be defined using mathematical functions. Along this chapter the authors claim that System Dynamics is an adequate modeling tool for “partially reducible uncertainty” and “irreducible uncertainty” problems. Finally, the authors discuss that in System Dynamics, validity means adequacy with respect to a purpose, and hence it cannot be made in absolute terms and the authors briefly introduce a set of techniques for testing structure and accuracy.
