Large insertions and deletions are common between maize inbreds, and include tandem repeat clusters, abundant retroelement and transposons. At the gene level, single nucleotide polymorphisms are common, especially in introns and untranslated regions of genes. Depending on choice of experimental population and region in the genome, linkage disequilibrium between polymorphic sites could decay very rapidly, or persist for hundreds of Kb. Appropriately chosen germplasm collections may be used for genetic association mapping (also called linkage disequilibrium mapping), either with candidate genes, or by scanning the whole genome with thousands of markers at high density. This approach, in favorite circumstances, could provide high resolution. The power of association mapping is variable, and has not been thoroughly investigated. Rapid advances in genome sequencing and high density genotyping are making this approach to relating genotype with phenotype increasingly attractive.

Some flares show a simple rise and fall temporal behavior, whereas others show more than one peak. Comparisons of images taken by the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) aboard the Yohkoh spacecraft with ground-based magnetic data (Hawaii, Kitt Peak and Mitaka) reveal that, at least for a flare-productive active region (NOAA 7260), flares with double-peaked and single-peaked time profiles occurred at systematically different locations within the region. We discuss this result in terms of theoretical models, especially those of coalescence of two current loops.

We analyze attitudes to both referenda and voting in national elections. Sample survey data are obtained from the Eurobarometer survey of transition countries in Central and Eastern Europe. The empirical results suggest that intended electoral participation increases with age, income and education. But attitudinal variables are also important and in particular confidence in the free market economy and satisfaction with the general development of the country impact positively on intended electoral participation.

These occurred in the absence of coronary atherosclerosis. The major mechanism by which the infarcts occurred was recurrent coronary artery spasm. The latter can occur spontaneously, asthma patients being particularly prone to it. However, various medications prescribed by different physicians may also have played a role.

Sample survey data are obtained from the Eurobarometer surveys of transition and EU candidate countries. The empirical results suggest that support for membership increases with socio-economic variables such as in come and education, reflecting self-interest. But attitudinal variables are also important and, in particular, confidence in the free market economy impacts positively on support for membership. Support for EU membership is not a mirror image of that for Nato, with the differences appearing to revolve around self-interest.
