Make Your Own Homework: An Alternative Approach to Assignments in a Flipped Calculus Class

This paper describes an alternative approach to homework, which asked the students to create and ... more This paper describes an alternative approach to homework, which asked the students to create and solve a problem set. The homework was one of several activities in an Introductory Calculus course taught using the Flipped Classroom method. The homework was meant to replace readings that were usually assigned to prepare students for the next class. Results from the experiment shows that this type of homework had a large impact on increasing students' understanding of the taught material. Students who were given this homework, on average, had a 29.98 grade points increase in posttest scores compared to students who were given the regular reading assignments. This increase can be attributed to students being better prepared for classes. By doing the homework, students were made to review the provided materials and had more problem sets to practice on. Moreover, students' reception of this type of homework was positive.

The convolutional neural network's ability to learn images has reigned in computer vision tas... more The convolutional neural network's ability to learn images has reigned in computer vision tasks of object detection, classification, and segmentation. In segmentation, the CNN architectures of U-Net and SegNet have shown a good performance; thus, we implemented these networks to take the region of interest (ROI) of the breast thermal images from database for mastology research (DMR). We fine-tuned the networks to find the optimal hyperparameter that can result in the best learning performance. The networks were trained using the stochastic gradient descent optimization algorithm, and weights were updated using the error backpropagation of the algorithm. To minimize the error, the loss function is applied to evaluate a candidate solution of the weights. Thus, we conducted a preliminary study on finding the optimal loss function for breast thermal image segmentation. We applied loss functions of cross-entropy, dice, and focal and figured out the one that provides the highest segmentation accuracy. Then, to evaluate the segmentation result, we calculated the pixel accuracy rate and the dice coefficient to obtain the overlapping index measuring the overlay area between ground truth and predicted output. The result shows that the SegNet model with cross-entropy loss function can take the ROI of breast thermal images at the highest pixel accuracy and optimum dice coefficient of 0.8845 and 0.7928, respectively.

This study shows a new approach method of material identification system using a capacitive senso... more This study shows a new approach method of material identification system using a capacitive sensor called the multi-frequency capacitive sensor system. The material to be measured is a pure liquid of H2O. This sensor system’s workings are to use the principle of EIS (Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy), in which the measured material is non-invasive or not in direct contact with the sensor. The material is put in a vessel that has been wrapped with foil paper and coated by four electrodes sensor. The new approach method used is to obtain a signal response that is a pulse signal. It has the value of the difference in voltage reduction between the output voltage and the input voltage stored by DSO (Digital Storage Oscilloscope). This study aims to get the primary signal assumed to be noise, but the desired noise. Several frequencies inputs are low frequencies, where vary from 1 kHz – 1 MHz. Therefore, the results obtained clearly show that the multi-spectral capacitive sensor system can produce the main input. This main signal is assumed to have fluctuations values of the signal response of the measured material. Also, it will be advanced signal processing that is identified quite correctly.

Besides, this filter can also suppress noise in digital signal processing. This study aims to segment the fluctuation pattern, which results from data acquisition from a capacitive sensor with the object H2O. The fluctuation pattern to be processed is the High Fluctuation (HF) pattern by dividing the pattern into several segments according to the input frequency. It aims to see in more detail and clearly the state of each segmentation of the pattern. The results will show noise attenuation and suppression after filtering with a Wiener filter. The Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) value will also be analyzed, which shows that the signal quality is getting better after applying the Wiener filter. Then, the analysis of the Mean Square Error (MSE) results can provide more consistent results with a smaller average error.

Antena mikrostrip array memiliki bandwidth dan gain yang lebih besar dibandingkan antenna mikrostrip tunggal. Pada penelitian ini membahas tentang bagaimana menghitung dan mendesain antena mikrostrip patch segitiga array untuk aplikasi WLAN 2,4 GHz. Antena mikrostrip ini dibuat menggunakan Bahan Epoxy fiberglass FR-4 dengan konstanta dielektrik (er)=4,4, ketebalan lapisan dielektrik (h) = 1,6 mm dan loss tangent = 0,02. Teknik pencatuan yang digunakan adalah teknik Microstrip Line Feed. Perancangan dan simulasi menggunakan bantuan software Advanced Design System (ADS). Pada hasil penelitian, menunjukan perancangan antena mikrostrip patch segitiga array yang dilakukan sudah memenuhi syarat untuk diaplikasikan pada WLAN 2,4 GHz dengan syarat VSWR 1 sampai < 2, return loss < -9.54 dB. Measuring the Increase in Students’ Comprehension in a Flipped Introductory Calculus Course

Introductory Calculus is one of the foundational courses in any engineering curriculum. Many inno... more Introductory Calculus is one of the foundational courses in any engineering curriculum. Many innovations have been introduced in the teaching of this course to enhanced students’ understanding of its material. One new innovation that is increasingly being adopted is the Flipped Classroom method. This paper reports on an experiment that measures the increase in comprehension of students who took an Introductory Calculus course taught using the Flipped Classroom method that was specially designed for a developing country setting. Results from the experiment shows that students who were taught using this Flipped Classroom method had better comprehension than students who were taught using the traditional classroom method. Specifically, students who were taught using the Flipped Classroom method had, on average, 17.45 points higher exam scores.

A common WLAN application is Wi-Fi technology, where it is easy to find in public areas and has a great interest of internet access users, particularly those who use mobile devices (nodes) such as notebooks and mobile phones. The phenomenon has impact on the energy consumption in Wi-Fi networks. Nowadays, the consumption, management and energy efficiency of indoor wireless networks are important issues. Therefore, this paper analyses the energy efficiency for Wi-Fi 802.11b multi-hop networks. The Wifi 802.11b multi-hop network is simulated using Network Simulator 3 (NS-3), in which the network consists of a line sequence of 5 wireless nodes that are a source, three relays and a destination. In the simulation, several energy parameters are considered such as the number of nodes, grid spacing, packet size and data rate. Moreover, several important energy efficiency factors are analyzed including energy consumption, effective energy utilization, bit energy, throughput and energy efficiency. The simulation results show that the number of the packet size and throughput have impact on energy consumption and energy efficiency in the network. While effective energy utilization decreases as the throughput of the network increases. Therefore, the Wi-Fi 802.11b multi-hop network can be an alternative green communication method which has a higher energy efficiency.

Electroencephalographic data signals consist of electrical signal activity with several character... more Electroencephalographic data signals consist of electrical signal activity with several characteristics, such as non-periodic patterns and small voltage amplitudes that can mix with noise making it difficult to recognize. This study uses several types of EEG wave signals, namely Delta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. The method we use in this study is the application of an impulse response filter to replace the noise obtained before and after the FIR filter is applied. In addition, we also analyzed the quality of several types of electroencephalographic signal waves by looking at the addition of the signal to noise ratio value. In the end, the results we get after applying the filter, the noise that occurs in some types of waves shows better results.

A 55-year-old male was admitted to hospital with chief complaint of abdominal distention since o... more A 55-year-old male was admitted to hospital with chief complaint of abdominal distention since one year before admission, and it became more prominent than before. The physical examination showed splenomegaly with schuffner line S5, and it was confirmed with ultrasonography. The routine blood test showed a hemoglobin level of 9.2 g/L, leukocyte count of 14.690/µL and thrombocyte count of 115 x 103/µL. From the peripheral blood smear results, the suspected diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukemia with differential diagnosis of a leukemoid reaction was made. However, bone marrow aspiration revealed hypoplastic marrow of primary myelofibrosis. The patients with primary myelofibrosis need early diagnosis and treatment to manage the symptoms of splenomegaly, stop fibrosis process and extramedullary hematopoiesis. Early treatment, in this case, can decrease poor prognosis and mortality rate.
