When Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of All Saints Church in Wittenberg, ... more When Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of All Saints Church in Wittenberg, Saxony, he sparked the Protestant Reformation. Luther, a Catholic priest, analyzed Catholic doctrine and presented his own take on several of the ideas that would ultimately lead to the formation of his own liturgy and music for use in the church. Some 200 years later a Lutheran organist and choirmaster named Johann Sebastian Bach would use Luther's view of the Catholic liturgy to compose his last large work: the Mass in B Minor. Within the Mass, Bach took a past composition for the Dresden court (1733's Missa), a Sanctus composed for Christmas day in 1724, and parodied several of his other compositions for the Credo and Agnus Dei to complete the Mass. The fact that Bach composed an entire setting of the Catholic liturgy is fascinating; the Lutheran liturgy would have had no place for a complete setting of Catholic rites.
