In many cases, this material, if properly treated and processed, can be recycled and reused on site. If this material is not treated as planned from the beginning of the project, but is taken to the landfill and mixed with bad material or construction waste, then when the need for it arises, it is difficult to separate it and return it to the construction process. In the simplest case, the material can be used as an embankment to the extent that it meets the requirements regarding the quality of the embankment material. Better quality material can often be recycled to make fractions for various types of concrete, buffer aggregates or decorative stone walls (architectural stone). In the current example of the "Počitelj" tunnel, through tests of fractions, definition of recipes, recycled material from tunnel excavation was successfully used as aggregate for shotcrete, concrete for inner lining and construction, buffer, bedding for laying pipes and making front slopes from crushed stone. This reduced the purchase and transport of aggregates from local quarries to the minimum possible, thus saving resources, with financial benefit. In summary, through this example, it can be noted that the reuse of tunnel excavation will play an important role for future tunnel projects due to environmental and economic reasons.

Research paper thumbnail of Application of seismic methods for determining the depth of the rock mass damage zone around the excavation profile by blasting

Global Journal of Engineering and Technology Advances, Mar 30, 2024

Research and determination of the blasting damage zone around the profile of tunnels or undergrou... more Research and determination of the blasting damage zone around the profile of tunnels or underground structures is a platform that would serve to confirm or correct blasting parameters and underground assemblies, that is, geotechnical and main tunnel projects. From the obtained research, the stability of the excavation profile, as well as the safety risk for equipment and personnel on the construction site, would be better understood. Considering the importance of the size of the damage zone of the rock mass in terms of its influence on stability, the amount of primary support elements required to achieve the stability of the excavated space, and the additional costs of stabilization of the excavation and the safety of people and equipment, the aforementioned problem was investigated and processed for specific cases and for the rock mass characteristic for the location in question. From the described research, the change in the elastic characteristics of the rock mass and the depth of the damage zone around the tunnel excavation profile were measured and calculated.

The tunnel is a two-tube with a length of about 3.300 meters. During the excavation of the Zenica tunnel, large amounts of groundwater were recorded in several sections in both tunnel pipes, from wet to flowing. During the tunnel excavation, the engineering-geological data on the rocks through which the excavation was carried out was regularly recorded, and on the basis of these data, the RMR classification of the rock mass was determined. The paper presents one of the possible solutions to control the inflow of groundwater during tunnel excavation by making subhorizontal wells and installing self-drilling anchors for the purpose of directing groundwater into drainage pipes or tunnel sides. The main goal of controlling the groundwater inflow is to reduce the impact of groundwater on further tunnel excavation and to modify the category of rock mass (additional benefit), and thus to reduce the unit price of tunnel excavation.

The problem of large deformations is very pronounced when excavating longer tunnels in poorer roc... more The problem of large deformations is very pronounced when excavating longer tunnels in poorer rock mass, which can result in serious potential hazards to safety, costs and time of tunnel construction. Taking the Golubinja tunnel, located on the route of corridor Vc, as an engineering background, displacement monitoring was carried out on a certain section of the right tunnel tube with a length of approximately m'. Displacement monitoring was carried out in relation to different distances during the excavation of the top heading-bench and the bench-primary invert in a poorer rock mass with a defined RMR of to points. The designed tunnelling method is based on the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method "NATM". The results show that in complex geological conditions, displacements can be effectively controlled by defining the optimal distance between the excavation phases of the top heading-bench and the bench-primary invert. Through a detailed analysis of the collected data, the mathematical functions of the dependence of the displacement in relation to the distances between the excavation phases of the top heading-bench and the bench-primary invert were obtained. The functions can be used as a tool for a quick and simple analysis of displacements depending on the distance between the excavation phases of the top heading-bench, and the bench-primary invert in a poor rock environment.

A proper assessment of the stability leads to proactive decision making for the method of constru... more A proper assessment of the stability leads to proactive decision making for the method of construction, the shape and size of the cross-section of the facility and the adequate support. The stability is directly dependent on the physical, mechanical and technical characteristics of the rock mass. The traditional assessment-based approach and the classification of stability of underground facilities is based on both experience and experiments with previously constructed facilities. To ease the process for the early phase of design, there was a need for the development of a mathematical model for assessment of the stability. Ambiguity in mining engineering, directs the development of the model using a fuzzy logic system and fuzzy "if-then" rules. The model was developed based on very scarce input data that is most often the only data available during the design stage. Fuzzy model results have shown, through the random selection of input data in the model, that in 70% of cases, there is high numerical congruence with the traditional method for determination of coefficient of stability S; and in 90% of cases, there is also congruence in accordance with the traditional approach to the classification of underground facilities based on the stability assessment.

By correctly choosing the equipment for drilling blast holes, defining the drilling and blasting parameters and excavation steps, a minimal zone of damage to the surrounding rock outside the line of excavation of pier sites S1R and S1L, which is inevitable during blasting excavation, has been achieved, which has the effect of preserving the bearing capacity of the rock mass as the most important supporting element.

The demand for construction, such as houses, hospitals, hotels, schools and so on, has expanded, especially in developing countries. One of the key elements that increases the demand for such products is the numerous government infrastructure projects and maintenance programs. All levels of government in Bosnia and Herzegovina strive to implement good infrastructure, because in this way they enable trade, support industry, connect workers with jobs, and in this way bring hope for prosperity in these areas. The paper gives a brief overview of the production and processing of dolomite from the "Plješevac" quarry near Kiseljak as a positive example from the practice of "production and processing from raw material to final product".

The Corridor Vc motorway in Bosnia and Herzegovina stretches from the northern border with the Republic of Croatia from Svilaj to Čapljina on the southern border with the Republic of Croatia, in Bijača. The Zenica tunnel is part of the Corridor Vc motorway in the municipality of Zenica and is currently the longest excavated tunnel with a total length of 3,330 meters. Excavation works were performed by a combination of blasting and machine excavation. The excavation of the tunnel was performed in sedimentary formations (flysch-like Upper Vranduk series 2 JK). Excavation of tunnels by blasting with adjusted drilling and blasting parameters in rock mass of poorer quality achieves better results in relation to machine excavation.

Global Journal of Engineering and Technology Advances, 2024
