A vector auto-regression model has been estimated for this purpose using variables for the indexes of production volume and business climate estimated on monthly basis. Data from the short-term business indicators as well as business surveys in industry conducted by the Bulgarian National Statistical Institute have been used. New insights about the hypothesis for positive effects of business climate expectations are suggested concerning the industrial production dynamics during this period. Evidence is provided in respect of the anticipated favorable effect of the business climate, as perceived by the managers in the industrial sector, on the production volume shifts observed at lag one month. Similar short-run effect is found in support of the hypothesis that improved expectations of the industrial managers about the business climate are systematically induced by an expansion of the industrial production.

The analysis utilizes data from a representative survey of 3,300 Bulgarian households conducted in 2007 and quantifies income differentiation effects related to certain socio-demographic characteristics. Quantile regression analysis reveals positive net effects of the degree of urbanization and the number of employed in the household as well as negative effects of the number of unemployed, children, and pensioners on the per-capita income level at all parts of the income distribution. Inequality indices decomposition by subgroups identifies the type of settlement, ethnical group, the number of children and unemployed as substantial sources of income inequality in Bulgaria.

The analysis utilizes sample data from a questionnaire survey among 345 representatives of business organizations having ownership, managerial, or expert positions within the firm. During the survey, respondents expressed their opinions about the spread of grey economy as well as about various aspects of transactions underreporting practices in their branch, providing a ground for the evaluation of the impact of these phenomena on the perceived potential for private businesses development. Evidence from business people attitudes is provided in support of the opinion that restraining the corruption and bureaucratic barriers, provision of the higher public decision-making transparency, as ...

Information is provided about the scale of re-migration to Bulgaria. An assessment is made of the possibilities of the local labour market to provide incentives for returning from abroad. Based on an empirical sociological survey conducted in 2017 (as part of the project “Return Migrants: Segmentation and Stratification of Economic Mobility” financed by the National Research Fund) categories of return migrants are differentiated based on their plans for the future – whether to stay or to leave Bulgaria again. The profile of the individual categories of return migrants is presented summarizing their socio-demographic characteristics and prior migration experience. Applying a binary logistic regression the social and demographic factors as well as the factors based on migration experience, that induce the attitudes toward staying or moving again, are identified.

Classical models of production functions are estimated after their double-log transformation into linear regression equations. Annual data for the years 2000-2015 measured at NUTS-3 regional level is utilized in respect of the district employment, GDP, and the regional investment measured by the expenditures on fixed assets acquisition.

The socio-demographic structure of both potential and return migrants is evaluated empirically using a large sample data for 2013 representative for Bulgarian population aged 18-65. On the basis of a ranking of Bulgarian regions and districts by an integral score of their socio-economic development (involving a set of development indicators) a range of regional disparities are revealed in respect of migration potential, return migration, and remittances allocation and utilization. The rich empirical evidence suggests that Bulgarian migration policies should emphasize substantially on the issues of regional disbalances in order to offset the evaluated distortions.

The paper focuses on the “stay or leave again” dilemma of Bulgarian return migrants. Data from a unique representative survey among households and their members who had been abroad during the period 2001-2005 is utilized. Two binary regression models are estimated for this purpose. The independent variables reflect the socio-demographic profile and foreign experience of return migrants. Satisfaction is related to age, duration of the stay abroad, qualified job under official contract, and employment in services. The leave again question has a clear positive answer for return migrants satisfied with their foreign experience. However, Bulgarian labor market faces a serious deficit in a range of professions which is supported by the finding that educational level acts as a hold-up factor regarding return migrants’ likelihood to leave ...

Nevertheless, the majority of return migrants express a high likelihood to go abroad again. The availability of acquaintances residing abroad is found to be a strong determinant ...
