The major benefit is decrease in fuel consumption and emissions. Warm asphalt mixtures are investigated by using organic additives; two additives (Asphaltan A and Asphaltan B) are utilized in this research. A program of laboratory testing is performed on WMA mixtures and hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures using two different additives and three contents. Two aggregate gradations were utilized with three values for each additive, and a total of 12 types of warm mixture and two types of HMA were produced. Warm asphalt mixtures were compacted utilizing a Marshall procedure, and optimum asphalt contents were found for each asphalt mixture. A moisture sensitivity test was carried out for all mixture types to find their moisture resistance. From the outcomes, most warm mixtures passed the minimum value of tensile strength ratio (TSR) (80%) as required by the AASHTO and some mixtures failed to meet this criterion, which indicates that the moisture resistance is a concern in warm mixtures. Also, the fracture energy values were higher for warm mixtures than HMA mixtures, which indicates a better resistance to cracking for WMA.

Modified bituminous materials assist to add benefits to performance, maintenance and construction, in terms of better and longer lasting road, and saving in total road life cost. This study attempts to identify the influence of polymer modification in improving asphalt mixture performance. Three types of polymer resins were used, namely, Epoxy resin, Phenol resin, and Polyester resin. The physical properties of asphalt cement were tested by penetration and softening point. Apart from mix performance, the effect of modification on Marshall properties was studied. To estimate the tensile strength and evaluate the mixture's susceptibility to temperature variations, three test temperatures were used (15, 30, and 45°C). Furthermore, modified mixtures were tested by measurement of static creep. Based on the study results, it was found that increasing the phenol or epoxy resin quantities in asphalt cement lead to an increase softening point and reduce penetration. Material properties can be improved by the incorporation of phenol and polyester resins, since recovery property can be improved. Moreover, using phenol resin in asphalt mixes can increase the resistance to deformation when exposed to traffic loading.

This structure provides higher permeability by allowing water to flow through it. Although these mixtures have good drainage properties, they exhibit poor strength with a short life span. Because of their poor performance, there is a lack to be used in pavement application. Attempts had made to increase mixture performance; one of these methods is by using fibers or polymers. The objective of the current study is to determine if modified OGFC mixes with different polymers and fibers have comparable performance. Polymers and fibers were used in OGFC mixes to evaluate their performance. Steel fiber, glass fibers, Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and Phenol resin were investigated in this study. The modified mixtures were tested by indirect tensile strength, Marshall and permanent deformation tests. Results showed that fibers decrease rutting by 19% and they have more effective than polymers that decrease rutting by 7%, and glass fiber was found to be more effective with a 24% reduction in permanent deformation than other additives to enhance performance.

Utilizing warm mix asphalt (WMA) for pavements attracts attention from around the world due to it... more Utilizing warm mix asphalt (WMA) for pavements attracts attention from around the world due to its benefits.

The objective of the current research is to assist Iraqi establishments in addressing the issues related to resistance to rutting when adopting this technology. An intensive study on the performance of WMA mixtures with local materials was carried out. Job mix formulas with 12.5 mm and 25 mm aggregate size were chosen for HMA and WMA. One WMA technology was used which is an organic additive; two additives were used Asphaltan A® and Asphaltan B®. All the mixture types are testes and compared with each other. The rutting sensitivity of the mixtures is evaluated using Wheel Track test. From the results, for surface mixtures, rut depth is directly proportional to WMA additive content. For base mixtures, more Asphaltan A® leads to more rut depth, but more A...

Baghdad faced with severe traffic problems along with the development in city size and economy. Passengers have to wait lots of time during commutation to work because of the serious traffic jams. In the last years, rate of car ownership has increased as income levels have gone up and cars have become a preferable mode of transport. Bus, as the only public mode of transport available, is suffering from inconvenience, slowness, and inflexibility. A big emphasis must be given to the public transport system because it introduces an active utilization of limited resources, energy and land. This study determines the demand of public routes for buses using boarding / alighting values to generate a model and assign these demand values to the bus network. Five public routes were selected to collect the required data. Ride check and Point check survey was conducted for each selected route. The re...

For the analysis of adverse effects of car ownership on transport mode choice, the comparison between the patterns of mode choices in the past with current situation was studied. The transport mode choice was calibrated using a Logit model; it combines different characteristics of the alternatives and individual socioeconomic variables in a meaningful way to calculate a utility value. The model requires data of zones, choice data of travelling mode and the selected mode attributes. Trans Cad was used to calibrate the utility functions, MNL analysis in Trans Cad is used to develop the model. The travelling modes used in the study area are private mode (car) and public mode (bus). The level of service variables (In-vehicle travel time, cost) and socioeconomic variables (auto ownership, income) are used. After calibration of the split model, the process of validation is achieved by comparing field measured modal split of traffic volumes with estimated split results of the model. The results show that a higher share of public transport in the past, while in 2014, it appears that the share of auto is higher. Through these results, it finds that public transport must be given the utmost importance in order to provide a sustainable environment in the region.
