Handbook of Research on Multicultural Perspectives on Gender and Aging

The number of older persons has increased substantially in recent years in most countries and reg... more The number of older persons has increased substantially in recent years in most countries and regions, and that growth is projected to accelerate in the coming decades. This is poised to become one of the most significant social transformations of the twenty-first century, with implications for nearly all sectors of society, including labor and financial markets, the demand for goods and services, such as housing, transportation, and social protection, as well as family structures and intergenerational ties. Preparing for the economic and social shifts associated with an aging population is thus essential to ensure progress in development, including towards the achievement of the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. There is urgent need to consider older persons in development planning, emphasizing that older persons should be able to participate in and benefit equitably from the fruits of development to advance their health and wellbeing, and that societie...

Research paper thumbnail of A Study on Skill Development and Productivity of the Workforce in Indian Economy

Integrative Journal of Conference Proceedings, 2019

This paper analyses the current scenario of skilled workforce of Indian Economy and future requir... more This paper analyses the current scenario of skilled workforce of Indian Economy and future requirement of skill development. The paper also outlines skill gap in various sectors, the key issues and policy implications to address those issues and challenges in Skill Development and Productivity arena. Today, India is one of the youngest nations in the world with more than 62% of its population in the working age group (15-59 years), and more than 54% of its total population below 25 years of age. Its population pyramid is expected to bulge across the 15-59 age group over the next decade. It is further estimated that the average age of the population in India by 2020 will be 29 years as against 40 years in USA, 46 years in Europe and 47 years in Japan. In fact, during the next 20 years the labour force in the industrialized world is expected to decline by 4%, while in India it will increase by 32%. This poses a formidable challenge and a huge opportunity. To reap this demographic dividend which is expected to last for next 25 years, India needs to equip its workforce with employable skills and knowledge so that they can contribute substantively to the economic growth of the country. As India moves progressively towards becoming a global knowledge economy, it must meet the rising aspirations of its youth. This can be partially achieved through focus on advancement of skills that are relevant to the emerging economic environment. The challenge pertains not only to a huge quantitative expansion of the facilities for skill training, but also to the equally important task of raising their quality. Skills development is the shared responsibility of the key stakeholders viz. Government, the entire spectrum of corporate sector, community-based organizations, those outstanding, highly qualified and dedicated individuals who have been working in the skilling and entrepreneurship space for many years, industry and trade organizations and other stakeholders. The policy links skills development to improved employability and productivity in paving the way forward for inclusive growth in the country. The skill strategy is complemented by specific efforts to promote entrepreneurship in order to create ample opportunities for the skilled workforce. Skilling need to be an integral part of employment and economic growth strategies to spur employability and productivity. Coordination with other national macroeconomic paradigms and growth strategies is therefore critical.

Sustainable Development Goal 6 focuses on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). India is not a water deficit country, but due to severe neglect and lack of monitoring of water resources development projects, several regions in the country experience water stress from time to time. Further neglect in this sector will lead to water scarcity during the next 12 decades. It is therefore necessary to prevent this crisis by making best use of the available technologies and resources to conserve the existing water resources, convert them into utilisable form and make efficient use of them for agriculture, industrial production and human consumption. Imposing regulatory measures to prevent the misuse of water and introducing rewards and punishment to encourage judicious use of water, will be helpful to conserve water. Finally, awareness and orientation of all the water users to change their lifestyle to conserve water, can help the country to tide over the water crisis in the future. The challenge is manageable provided we have favourable policies and mechanisms to persuade our people to change their lifestyle.

Gender budgeting is a public financial management tool for transparency and accountability. Becau... more Gender budgeting is a public financial management tool for transparency and accountability. Because it combines gender views and takes into account concerns connected to gender at all levels and phases of development, planning, policy making, programs, and delivery methods, gender budgeting has been widely hailed as a critical instrument for advancing women's empowerment. Additionally, it effectively addresses gender disparities in budget allocations, particularly in areas that are reflective of the general public, such as education, health, and nutrition. Gender budgeting strives to increase access to resources while also ensuring that government resources are distributed fairly across all citizens and groups. As a result, gender budgeting opens up new possibilities for women's empowerment. Gender budgeting is becoming increasingly important and necessary in the contemporary Indian setting, where women were traditionally isolated, underestimated, and marginalized for a variety of reasons. Despite the fact that the Indian government's experience with gender budgeting is frequently cited as a model for other gender budgeting efforts, there seems to be a clear disparity between what was envisioned and what has been achieved under the banner of gender budgeting in the country.

Within tribal groups, women are more marginalized and sidelined than men despite their multiple roles in the household. Key for economic growth of tribal communities is the equal participation and promotion of women's physical and economic rights. This necessitates for a purposive design of activities and institutional mechanisms for both socially inclusive economic empowerment and environmentally sustainable growth by building their knowledge and skills to restore NTFP-based value chains for sustainable livelihoods. The present paper is an attempt to analyse and document the findings of an inclusive Lac livelihood model executed by Udyogini, a national-level NGO established by World bank in 1992, with support of PACS to address the geographical, social, technological and economic inclusion of tribal women in the Lac supply chain and downstream market integration to improve their incomes in Gumla district of Jharkhand state. It is found that by employing inclusive strategies, scientific technologies and participative approaches, the socially excluded women could be organized, engaged and integrated successfully by leveraging proven Lac-based livelihood model in the value chains and markets for increasing their incomes. The women demonstrated entrepreneurial abilities to handle markets and acquired economic empowerment over the incomes generated for family needs, mostly for education and health, while in some cases for assets building. The case study provided ample evidence that disadvantaged women could be receptive, Cooperative and capable of acquiring new skills and leadership responsibilities for value chain refinement, micro-enterprise development and management through appropriate training and skill building. Udyogini in partnership with PACS has revived the neglected and

In isolation, each of the four predictors significantly forecast mutual-fund returns from April 2008 to March 2011 for Indian market. The indicator of monetary conditions, i.e., the MIBOR premium, is found to have the strongest forecast power. Multivariate analysis confirms that the four predictors are indeed strong forecasters of mutual fund returns. Moreover, the MIBOR premium, term premium and lagged mutual-fund-risk premium emerge as the best and most consistent predictors of mutual fund returns. The market-risk premium is found to be good, but less consistent as predictor of mutual-fund returns.

The title shows alarming situation of widening inequality in India. The journey for Charles Darwin’s “Survival of Fittest” to “Survival of Richest” is not fascinating at all. Inequalities are growing in India – this has been corroborated by scholars and government bodies alike. The impact of inequality is especially stark at the margins of the Indian society, with some communities such as the Scheduled Tribes (STs) suffering from physical remoteness and systematic exclusion from the means to achieve vertical mobility. Furthermore, the concentration of wealth continues to be around primordial characteristics such as caste. On one hand, inherited wealth and caste privilege continue to shape power and influence and on the other hand, we see the persistence of marginalization among historically disadvantaged who are trapped in intergenerational poverty.
