But, this wisdom is not workable thoroughly as it has been a terrifying phenomenon in higher education atmosphere. A silent class definitely threatens the process of learning in Iraqi higher education as ''[silence]is often troubling when students speak, but disturbing when they do not'' (Boler, 2004quoted in Armstrong,2007b:p.1). The present study aims to identify, describe, and analyze the reasons behind silence of the majority part of the silent students at university level. It is hypothesized that certain psychological and pedagogical factors could be the main source of Iraqi learners’ silence. The empirical data is based on a questionnaire administered to two groups of 4 th grade students at the Dept. of English, College of Arts, University of Mosul during the academic year (2008-2009). In this talk, we propose a semantic taxonomy of hyperbole in American and British modern war poetry showing how this taxonomy helps readers figure out the poet’s meaning on a deeper level via a variety of hyperboles. The main objectives are to (1) identify the elements of such a trope in the corpora, (2) approach a semantic taxonomy of hyperbolic elements, and (3) come up with the true hidden messages and nature of the trope in accordance with the typology of the semantic field under which the trope is embraced. The corpora consist of two impressive poems – ‘Abu Ghraib’ by Curtis D. Bennett (American), and ‘A Message from Tony Blair to the People of Iraq by David Roberts (British). Findings indicate that both the evaluative and the quantitative dimensions are key characteristics that often coincide and should, therefor...

(2) To what extent, the poets manage to link the aspects of the 20 th C., for instance, the social, political, etc. with their inner conflict? (3) Are requestives marshalled by the gender group and the nationality of each poet? 3. The Hypotheses: We hypothesize the following: (1) Different acts of requestives are used in different situations so as to convey various messages. (2) Different acts of requestives are controlled by different conflicts, gender groups and nationalities.

Abstract
The above quotation echoes the wisdom of silence. But, this wisdom is not workable thoroughly as it has been a
terrifying phenomenon in higher education atmosphere. A silent class definitely threatens the process of learning
in Iraqi higher education as ''[silence]is often troubling when students speak, but disturbing when they do not''
(Boler, 2004quoted in Armstrong,2007b:p.1). The present study aims to identify, describe, and analyze the
reasons behind silence of the majority part of the silent students at university level. It is hypothesized that certain
psychological and pedagogical factors could be the main source of Iraqi learners’ silence. The empirical data is

Arts, University of Mosul during the academic year (2008-2009). In total, 43 students (20 females) and (23

The present paper is geared towards exploring English idioms on the basis of a large corpus. The analysis of usage data provides an approximate insight concerning English idiomatic expressions. This paper also aims at providing a description of idioms which accounts for the syntactic structure, meaning and cultural effects on idioms. (111) English idiomatic expressions analysed herein rest on the following assumptions: (1) Idioms have a mercury-like nature; it is not easy to find a rule that embodies all idioms as far as form and structure are concerned. (2) Tracing back the origin of idioms helps to grasp the meaning of idioms in one single culture. Results show that though the present paper is an attempt to come closer to a syntactic, semantic and pragmatic typology of idioms, still idioms cannot be shaped due to the fact that they are not only linguistically-based but also culturally-based, i.e. they have an ad hoc usage. The paper also provides some suggestions on how to master idioms on the part of English foreign learners. Idioms remain but a field which is full of surprises for researchers and scholars.

Yet, still in some situations, avoiding certain linguistic items is necessarily needed in communication among different interlocutors in order not to break communication. The current work is open to one major objective: unearthing an interesting linguistic phenomenon, namely avoidance with its two main types: verbal and nonverbal. The verbal aspects have been tackled by shedding light on five main types of avoidance, morphological, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and semantico-pragmatic avoidance, side by side with the reasons that lead to avoidance in one of the aforementioned linguistic fields or another. As for non-verbal avoidance in linguistic settings, again three main types of avoidance, viz. positive (represented by two manners) and negative avoidance have been studied in detail. The present paper ends with some concluding remarks that highlight the main points attended to in the preceding pages of the research.
