This study aims to determine the effects of modern building services on the building's façade of ... more This study aims to determine the effects of modern building services on the building's façade of heritage shophouse in George Town, Penang. The study selects shophouse façade as a case study, for the shophouse importance in forming most of the urban fabric in George Town and its façade as it represents the outside part that gives the visual appearance of the building, and therefore, the current streetscape of the area. The focus is on the background of the area and its history, the architectural features of the various types of the shophouse, its categories, the geometrical composition that gives the visual appearance to its façade. The data collected included the building services (traditional and modern) used in shophouse building. The methodology of this research is a comparative analysis of two conditions of heritage buildings. The first one is the original state of the building, as it was built with the authentic architectural features. Secondly, on the current state after the additional features related to the installations of modern building services. The main difference between the two cases is that the original building is built with its traditional methods and passive techniques allow at the time of building, and integrated with the architectural properties of the structure. On the other hand, modern appliances are made with features that dominate and blemish the physical appearance of the building, the façade function, building and finishing materials. The insensitive placements of building services appliances had reduced the authenticity of George Town heritage buildings.

Old cities around the world have special features, which form the mental image for their users. A... more Old cities around the world have special features, which form the mental image for their users. Architectural and urban elements and the relations that combine them produce this image. Colour is one of the most important elements that give users the mental image of the city. Traditional buildings were built basically by using available natural materials. Before the usage of paints, these materials were the main source of colours on the buildings. Hence, the old city of Mosul/ Iraq had its colour scheme. From the middle of 2014 until its liberation in the last quarter of 2017, Mosul City had faced a crisis of terrorism. The old city had the largest ratio of destruction among the rest of the city, and lose many of its historic structures. As they needed to settle down as soon as possible, refuge people began to return, repair, and rebuild their damaged buildings by spontaneous efforts. However, their actions were not following any historical regulations. Aside from many uncontrolled efforts, painting the repaired building with new (bizarre) pigments, that differed from the original colours, lead to composite a new mental image for the cityscape. This paper aims to explore the impact of facilitating new colours on the cityscape of the old city of Mosul, by studying international cases of using colours in forming cityscape, as well as to suggest regulations for using paint, by extracting the original colours of the traditional urban scene from the related photos.

The architectural form of Penang/Georgetown shophouses is now threatened by urban development, wh... more The architectural form of Penang/Georgetown shophouses is now threatened by urban development, which involves many kinds of visual problems causes. The porpose of this study is to clearify these problems, review the visual properties of shophouse facade, and how the visual problems affect the exterior design of shophouse facade. The research background contains a historical information about Georgetown World Heritage Site (GTWHS) and shophouse styles, the possible causes for visual problems assosiated with historical areas, along with other studies about architectural form analysis. However, a graphic analysis aplied on shophouse facade styles, applying the architectural formal ideas on them, after that, each visual problems cause is linked to architectural feature affected by it, in order to determine the negative impact made by them. Lastly, points of recommendations established to preserve the original typology of shophouse facade.

One of the most important issues of the architectural and urban design studies, is the analysis a... more One of the most important issues of the architectural and urban design studies, is the analysis and evaluation of the visual and aesthetic aspects in the heritage streets. Every heritage street has its own visual identity, which appears clearly on its facades, street furniture and ground details. A planned treatment of the visual and aesthetic characteristics of the design elements of the street leads to achieve multiple kinds of benefits; such as clean and pollution-free environment, psychological comfort, tourism attraction, economical income, in additional to preserve the heritage features of the street itself. This study aims to view the current visual problems in the streets of Georgetown world heritage site, through studying the visual elements and relationships of the street facade and related issues, and the negative elements and factors that harms the livability in the heritage streets of Georgetown/ Penang, and finally; to suggest some solutions to sustain the heritage value of them.

Stress is one of these reflections which integrate by indivsual needs and coping resources. There are few design characteristics that have the potential to challenge human adaptive spatial resources, stress occurs when there is difficult predictability of misaffordances of internal environment. The results of this articles is that the arrangement of boundaries and the openness of the perimeters affect, to the predictability.

3D Digital Modeling of Traditional Alleys Facades in Islamic City-A Case Study in Mosul, 2009

In spite of the fact that Muslim architects used more than one method of organizing information a... more In spite of the fact that Muslim architects used more than one method of organizing information about their designs , there is a remarkable degree of unity that can be found in any Islamic city both in its whole urban scene or within parts or elements such as alleys' facades in old residential districts which represent the skin of traditional courtyard dwellings inside them. In this paper , an attempt is made to reconstruct digitally a facade of an old alley in Mosul by utilizing findings gained from the analysis of (20) existing alleys facades. Attention is focused on rhythm as the most noticed feature in these facades. A comparison is made later between this reconstruction and real photo. Auto CAD 2008 is applied for the task.
