The management of livestock diseases transmission is dependent on the effectiveness of livestock ... more The management of livestock diseases transmission is dependent on the effectiveness of livestock health institutions, livestock disease monitoring and reporting mechanisms, and the management of livestock markets. The relative weakness of such institutions and mechanisms in Low-Middle Income Countries increases the importance of livestock owners' livestock disease prevention choices. Understanding private demand for preventative disease measures is, therefore, all the more important. The accurate estimation of hypothetical demand for new livestock vaccines is important for policy makers, although challenging. The challenge relates to the nature of livestock disease and the hypothetical choice context. Individual decision making of livestock dependent households is an important mediating factor, within coupled human and natural systems, in the transmission of livestock diseases. Kenyan data (elsewhere presented) demonstrates that the stressors of a lack of rain and perceptions of financial well-being are associated with short-term changes in cognitive capacity. As a consequence, measuring and controling for various forms of choice heuristic use and changes in short-term cognitive capacity are important for robust demand analysis among marginalized populations. In estimating agro-pastoralists' demand for new contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) vaccines in Kenya, this paper identifies the effects of respondent short-term cognitive capacity in completing discrete choice experimental task and the subsequent effects on willingness-to-pay (WTP) estimation. Results indicate a positive estimated relationship of fluid intelligence and choice heuristics on demand for new CBPP vaccines. The estimation of WTP for CBPP disease risk information is significantly lower using WTP space estimates rather than traditional preference space estimates.

The study was conducted among civil servants at the headquarters of five government ministries namely: Ministries of Medical Services, Water and Irrigation, Transport, Roads and Lands, all in Nairobi, Kenya. The study sought to find out the main factors that the civil servants regarded as critically essential in motivating them and whether there was a significant relationship between motivation and worker performance. It also sought to establish whether there was a significant gender difference in motivation and in the performance of the civil servants. A sample size of 133 subjects was used and an integrated sampling technique which had features of purposive, maximum variation and convenient sampling was utilized. The main findings of the study were that: different motivation variables are not regarded equally critical in motivating employees of public organizations; motivation has a positi...

In effect, the purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between the self-esteem of orphaned secondary students and their socio-economic status in Kirinyaga, Nyeri North and South Nyeri districts of Kenya. The research design was survey. According to district education officers in the three districts, the total population of secondary school students was 58,448. Out of this population, 426 students constituted the sample of this study. Simple random and purposive techniques were used in sampling. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. In data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics were used in analyzing the data. The major finding of this study was that socio-economic status of orphans influence the development of self-esteem. One of the recommendations of this study was that the Governments should come up with policies that would enable orphans to retain th...

The main aim was to investigate how the self-concept, behavioral attitudes and academic performance may interact with each other in the face of HIV/AIDS scourge and the likely outcomes. The study consisted of 308 pupils, selected from class 4, 5, 6, 7 and class 8 in nine primary schools in Nairobi West District, Kenya. The nine schools were sampled from about 132 schools. The study included HIV infected children from various children's homes and normal family set-ups who were enrolled as pupils in these schools. The results provided evidence that; there was significant relationship between HIV status and the pupils' self-concept, behavioral attitudes and academic performance. Moreover there was strong and significant correlation between self-concept ...

It aimed at investigating the factors that were considered to influence students' attitude towards the study of Physics in secondary schools in Imenti South District, Kenya. The factors under consideration were perceived adequacy of physics laboratory equipment, perceived teacher competence, the influence of calculations in the physics curriculum and sex differences in students' attitude. The study sample consisted of 120 students. These were drawn from four secondary schools sampled through stratified random technique. Descriptive survey design was used. Two instruments were used for data collection. These were a students' questionnaire and a laboratory equipment checklist. The questionnaire was administered to the students at one sitting in each of the schools. The observation checklist was filled by the laboratory assistant in each of the schools. Each of the independent variables had its items scored separately. A...

Two SEM models were formulated and their fit was tested using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Scientists). One SEM model was found to have a better fit for the data i.e. covariance structure or correlation. With this SEM model it was found that the best causal relationship was between O-level Mathematics (OMATH) and dependent variables with physical science orientation, while O-level English (OENG) was found to have a causal relationship with dependent variables with social science orientation. OENG had more causal relationship with more dependent variables. The implication was, a good performance in social sciences was to a great extent due to previous good performance in OENG while a good performance in physical science was to a great extent due to previous good performance in OMATH. The study did not provide the pr...

To achieve this objective, the study was guided by the following specific objectives: To determine the women perception of the concept of social economic development, establish the role of women in socio-economic development in the community, determine the factors that challenge women in their daily lives while carrying out their social economic activities, investigate the efforts being done by women and other stakeholders to alleviate the social economic development challenges. To achieve these objectives, the research use both quantitative and qualitative approach to collect and analyze the data. The quantitative approach was met through the use of demographic information, while the qualitative findings were by the use of In-depth interviews for Key informants and focus group discussions (FGDs). The target population was middle ag...
