The Ministry of Education is charged with the responsibility of developing national policies and ... more The Ministry of Education is charged with the responsibility of developing national policies and programmes for accessible quality and affordable school education, post school, high school and academic research. Basic Education department, one of the wings in the MOE, looks at the running of pre-primary, primary and secondary levels of teaching and learning. This department has less number of women in the leadership positions. The under-representation of women in top educational management has impacted negatively on government policies and general educational curriculum, which has lacked gender mainstreaming for equitable development. The purpose of the study was to investigate challenges being faced by women in the involvement and participation in education management at the Ministry of Education, directorate of Basic Education. The study used descriptive survey design. Data collection was done using semi structured questionnaires. The data collected was analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively using descriptive statistics with the help of Statistical Professional Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 2.0. The findings showed that majority of women in the education managerial levels were few and could not perform their duties and responsibilities effectively due to administrative issues like gender stereotyping, Socio-cultural factors such as religion, taboos and economic factors such as lack of financial muscle, contributing to their dismal performances. It is recommended that the gender mainstreaming policies and other related pieces of legislations supporting women involvement, participation and ascending to leadership roles be implemented for the benefit of women and the society at large.

Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) develops Interactive Radio Lessons (IRLs) with education curriculum experts and other stakeholders for all levels of education below the university level, and the general public. The research study was carried out to find out the technological challenges being faced by radio broadcasts to schools programme in both public and private primary schools in Rangwe Division, Homa Bay County. The study used descriptive survey design. The respondents were 25 headteachers, 50 teachers, 150 learners, 2 AEOS, 2 KBC engineers and 2 KICD programme coordinators. The findings of the study can significantly contribute to new knowledge in the field of Interactive Radio Lessons (IRLs) in schools. The stakeholders of radio broadcasts to schools programme like KICD, MOEST, and AEOs among others can liaise and work together to achieve the common goal of equal education for all.

The health sector in Kenya therefore plays a vital role economically, socially and politically in making the country to realize her dreams of vision 2030. Kenya Vision 2030 is the country's new development blueprint covering the period 2008 to 2030. It aims at transforming the country into a newly industrializing middle-income country providing a high quality life to all its citizens by the year 2030. Under the health sector, the Vision 2030 is to provide an efficient and high quality health system with the best standards through devolving health management, focusing more on preventive other than curative care. It is necessary for the central government to take cognizance of the fact that effective health care system is essential for the development of a country.

The major aim of the broadcast is to widening access to education. The purpose of the study was to establish how different transmission modes affect the accessibility of the radio broadcast to schools within Rangwe Division, Homa Bay County. The study used a descriptive survey design. Data collection was done using semi-structured questionnaires and observation schedules. The data collected was analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively using descriptive statistics with the help of Statistical Professional Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 20. The findings showed that absolute majority of schools were not accessing radio broadcasts to schools programme due to; lack of functional radio sets in schools, electricity, Poor radio signal receptions, and lack of sensitization in schools. It is recommended that stakeholders of radio broadcasts to schools programmes like KICD, MOEST, KBC, TAC Tutors or AEOs, schools and other education sectors should liaise and work together to achieve the common goal of the programme which is equal access to education for all learners.

Obesity prevalence in Kenya has increased dramatically for the past years and now it is reaching ... more Obesity prevalence in Kenya has increased dramatically for the past years and now it is reaching an epidemic proposition. Its upward trend all over the world is generating enormous interest and policy developments. In developing nations it is rapidly increasing in women more than in men. Obesity is becoming a public health concern in Kenya, especially among the urban population. It is a condition, which is brought about by abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the adipose tissue to the extent that health may be impaired (World Health Organization, 1997). It comes as a result of the increase in the number or size of fat cells in a person’s body. For a normal-sized person, the fat cells are between 30-35 billion, which increases in size and later in number (Wabictsch, 2002). Obesity is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 and above. Body Mass Index (BMI) is the weight of a person in kilograms over the height in meters square (Kg/M2). Body Mass Index categorizes obesity into different classes. Class I, II and III are being identified with a BMI of ≥30 but <35, ≥35 but <40, and ≥40, respectively. A BMI of 18.5-25 is regarded as normal. This study aimed at investigating the prevalence of obesity and factors that contribute to its occurrence among women in Nairobi. The study was to establish the prevalence of obesity among women in Nairobi, to determine whether using family planning methods is one of the risks factors of obesity among women in the target population, to determine the relationship of socio-economic status of women and obesity and to assess the activity levels of the women. A simple random sampling method was used to select the target population of 200 women within the total population of the area. Data was collected through the use of structured questionnaires. Results from the test indicated that women between the age brackets of 35 and above have a significant prevalence level of obesity, which was 30.7 on average. Women who are married, having children and are self-employed have got higher risk factors in becoming more obese than those who are single, not having more than one child and are employed. For those women who were using family planning methods, there was a likelihood that they gained more weight. There was a slight relationship between the use of family planning methods and obesity, which was about 10.2%. There was a significant relationship between leisure activity and obesity that was about 51.4%. The prevalence of obesity among women was found to be 25.6% up from the previous data of Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS) of 2009, which was 23%. Other factors that were associated with the development of obesity were low levels of physical activity. In women studied 60% of them do not do any kind of physical activity. Respondents .40% of them spent their time playing while 39% spent their leisure time watching television. There are many obesity-related conditions, which uniquely or mostly affect women. However specific studies had hardly been carried out to establish the prevalence of obesity in Kenya and whether using family planning methods is another contributing factor apart from changes in lifestyles. This study concludes that the prevalence of obesity among women in the city of Nairobi is high compared to those in most developed countries. There is a need to plan for most efficient interventions not only to ensure that we are food secure but also to maintain healthy lifestyles and reduce the prevalence of obesity among women.
