We shall leave aside his critique of Andreas Malm, since it is less directly concerned with the theoretical foundations of MRT and more so with the accuracy of Malm's own polemics. Heron's contribution importantly points to an apparent gap in MRT as elaborated by Foster, Burkett, Clark, York, and others; namely, the problem of the subject as it appears not only in German Idealism, most notably in Kant and Hegel, but also in Marxist theory writ large. Heron's astute analysis contains a positive element, that is, an attempt to further develop MRT by grounding it in "an ontology that can account for the effects of the subject as a gap or crack within an ontologically

Yet, beyond a few introductory remarks, little has been said about the content of this concept and, even less, its relation to Lenin. Generally, the concept attempts to combine Leninist political theory with the ecological analyses of the growing number of Eco-socialists and Eco-marxists working both within the academy and without. This paper intends an initial, philosophical contribution toward developing Ecological Leninism: (1) by providing an interpretation of Lenin’s philosophical method, i.e., dialectical & historical materialism; and (2) explicating the way in which this philosophy gives rise to a political ecological theory and practice, Ecological Leninism, that addresses the crisis of the metabolic rift between nature and society. We intend to contribute to the development of Ecological Leninism by clarifying the philosophy through which the political method is articulated. Thus, we hope to show that, under the conditions of a global metabolic rift produced by capitalist society, Ecological Leninism as a political ecological theory signals the possibility of securing a just and sustainable world for future generations. István Mészáros asserts “[t]he proper theorization of the new imperialism…was left to the age of Lenin,” we require the theorization of the metabolic rift, ours is the age of Ecological Leninism.
