This belief moves us away from addressing the root causes of hunger and malnutrition. In fact, inequity and armed conflict play a larger role. The world’s hungry are disproportionately located in Africa and Asia, in conflict-ridden zones. Available open access online at:

By advancing the concept of foodscape the recursive relationship between society and space is studied with respect to the habit of purchasing prepared food in Bangkok. The sale of prepared food, particularly at the level of small and micro-enterprises, is dominated by women. What is fascinating about the Thai case is the presence of women in this sector making them a firm part of the public sphere. By looking at the mutual interrelationship between food-systems, gender relations and urban spatial phenomena, I establish why and how public eating is gendered and how small foodshop (eating establishment) owners are adjusting to the rapidly changing environment of Bangkok. There are three specific questions addressed: i) how can we represent Bangkok's foodscape?; ii) how is this foodscape gendered?; and iii) what spaces are associated with the sale of prepared food in the city and how are these changing in light of rapid...

Comparing and contrasting India, Thailand and the Philippines where she has had direct experience, she highlights the diverse legal traditions and cultural issues surrounding and dictating women’s access to market places. Having a federal legal framework with a modified Westminster tradition, India is the home of recent, progressive statutes concerning access to public space for livelihoods such as street vending. The Philippines absorbs American, Spanish and local influences, whilst Thailand combines civil law with a tradition of authoritarian rule in the context of ostensibly being a constitutional democracy. Yasmeen evaluates the prevailing patterns of women’s access to public space for their livelihoods—specifically as street vendors—in all three countries against a backdrop of historical and contemporary legal and cultural influences. Whereas Southeast Asian women, particularly in Thailand and the Philippines have ‘culturally sanctioned’ access to public space as both micro entrepreneurs and consumers, Indian women, especially in the north compared to the south, traditionally do not. This has led to a different path towards access to public space, including legal challenges and grass-roots mobilisation initiatives such as the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) and the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI). Additionally, India has developed approaches leading devolution of power through legislation such as India’s Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) scheme. Meanwhile, Yasmeen explains, the Philippines exhibits examples of political and economic strategies including creation of the Cebu City United Vendors Association (CCUVA) and the registration of Filipino vendors with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

To support this argument, the paper presents the policy measures on street vending since the founding of Bangkok in 1973, the paradigm shift in employment since the Asian Economic Crisis in 1997, and empirical data from a study of street vending in four districts in Bangkok in 2016. The study collected data from street vendors and buyers in Bangrak, Pathumwan, Phranakhon and Samphanthawong. The sample size of the vendors in each district was 100 and participants were selected through random sampling. A sample of 50 buyers in each district was selected through convenience sampling. From the documentary study and the field data, the paper recommends that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration shou...

Using the well-established ethnographic approach of "thick description", this contribution to the study of Thai and Southeast Asian foodways concentrates on the nexus between eating habits, the social construction of gender and patterns of urban development in one of the world's mega-cities. By providing a detailed snapshot of the rapid growth period of the early to mid-1990s in central Bangkok and concluding with insights as to the impacts of the economic crisis that wreaked havoc in the latter part of the decade, Gisèle Yasmeen illustrates the recursive social, economic and cultural impacts of the "foodscape" on urban space.
Questions around values and ethics with respect to the life sciences in general and genomics in p... more Questions around values and ethics with respect to the life sciences in general and genomics in particular are some of the most controversial of our time. With the “God-like” ability to understand and manipulate the code of life itself, normative dimensions of new and emerging technologies provoke debates around the appropriateness of certain technological applications, their potential for misuse, privacy issues, and the potential for the resurgence in eugenics. The ethical, environmental, economic, legal, and social aspects of genomics and related life sciences and technologies is known as ELSI (Environmental, Legal, and Social Implications) and ELSA (Environmental, Legal and Social Aspects) in the United States and Europe, respectively, and as GE3LS in Canada (Genomics: ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social implications). This article, published in Springer's International Encyclopedia of Business and Professional Ethics, provides an overview of the debates involved. It is available for purchase or through your university library.
This article is an entry in the International Encyclopedia of Business and Professional Ethics, L... more This article is an entry in the International Encyclopedia of Business and Professional Ethics, Living Edition edited by D. Poff and A. Michalos and published by Springer. Food-related research in general is rich, varied, and from multiple perspectives including the health sciences – specifically nutrition – analyses of the broader agri-food system and related value chains, food engineering, and sociocultural perspectives to name a few. The rise of food studies in recent years focuses on the larger political, eco- nomic, and cultural context of agri-food systems as distinct from more technically focused research on food production, distribution, and more physiologically oriented nutritional work. Questions of values and ethics are either explicitly identified in the scholarship on food or implicit in the topics and research questions that are asked and the manner in which they are approached and answered.

(Sedelmeier, Kühne, O., and Jenal, C in Foodscapes. Wiesbaden, Springer VS, 2022), as well as Vonthron, Perrin and Soulard (Vonthron, S., Perrin, C., and Soulard, C.-T, Foodscape: A scoping review and a research agenda for food security-related studies. PloS one,15(5), 1–26. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0233218, 2020), this article will go back to the origins of the term ‘foodscape’ as it emerged in the early to mid 1990s. Specific attention will be paid to the influence of the work of Appadurai, Cosgrove as well as Porteous in English speaking geography, which lent themselves naturally to the proposal of this term and concept and its use for various empirical contexts. Some reflection on the limitations of the term and concept from a linguistic point of view will be offered given the challenges of a similar concept in, for example, romance languages such as French, Spanish, and Italian. The inherent tension on the ‘playfulness’ of the term and need for useful frameworks to address the urgent challenges related to food system transformation will feature prominently in this article.
Thirty years later, what have we learned and what does it matter? The article will critically unpack foodscape research at this critical juncture in human history where the ravages of Covid-19, climate change, and conflict make it collectively urgent to address hunger, malnutrition, and environmental degradation. As part of the conclusion, some commentary will be made on the utility, or not, of the foodscape concept to help reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2, which commits United Nations member states to achieve zero hunger, improved nutrition, and a transition to sustainable food systems by 2030.
