It is used as an enabling technology for a multitude of application areas in many disciplines. There has been tremendous developments both in M&S as well as in other disciplines due to the contributions of M&S. In the article, perceptions of M&S from different points of view are offered to reveal the richness of the possibilities it offers and its possible synergies with other related disciplines. Perception of M&S within the tool hierarchy reveals the parallel of M&S tools with physical and software engineering tools at three levels. Professional concerns are presented under three headings: (1) milestone achievements, (2) ongoing developments, and (3) challenges. Application categories of M&S show the richness of the discipline. An ongoing study to codify the M&S body of knowledge is also highlighted.

Already over 170 disciplines, methodologies, and approaches are simulation-based. The article clarifies the essence and power of simulation-based approach. To reach this aim the following is done: First, as a basis, the essence of simulation which consists of experimentation and experience is covered. The historic rise of the experimentation in early 17th century as a basis of scientific method as well as the additional benefits of simulated experiments are covered. The unique advantages of coupling simulation and the working of real systems are explained. Possibilities offered by simulation to gain three types of experience are clarified. A brief history of model-based approach as well as the first discipline for which model-based approach was promoted are explained. Richness and versatility of simulation and benefits of its use are detailed. The power gained by first and higher-order synergies of simulation with several other disciplines such as system theories, systems engineering, computers, software engineering, software agents, and reliability are mentioned. The already achieved shift of paradigm from model-based to simulation-based is strongly endorsed.

Hence, experimentation and experience aspects are explained. Several taxonomies, ontologies, and some ontology-based dictionaries are cited for a comprehensive and integrative perception of simulation. Finally, the evolution and increasing importance of simulation is explained.

Highlighting the benefits that simulation can bring to any field, the volume presents case studies by the leading experts from such diverse domains as the life sciences, engineering, architecture, arts, and social sciences. Topics and features: includes review questions at the end of every chapter; provides a broad overview of the evolution of the concept of simulation, stressing its importance across numerous sectors and disciplines; addresses the role of simulation in engineering design, and emphasizes the benefits of integrating simulation into the systems engineering paradigm; explains the relation of simulation with Cyber-Physical Systems and the Internet of Things, and describes a simulation infrastructure for complex adaptive systems; investigates how simulation is used in the Software Design Life Cycle to assess complex solutions, and examines the use of simulation in architectural design; reviews the function and purpose of simulation within the context of the scientific method, and its contribution to healthcare and health education training; discusses the position of simulation in research in the social sciences, and describes the simulation of service systems for simulation-based enterprise management; describes the role of simulation in learning and education, as well as in in military training. With its near-exhaustive coverage of disciplines, this comprehensive collection is essential reading for all researchers, practitioners and students seeking insights into the use of various modeling paradigms and the need for robust simulation infrastructure to advance their field into a computational future.

Research paper thumbnail of Prelude to cultural software agents: cultural backgrounds in agent simulation

For this purpose, bases for fuzzy computational agents to represent cultural background and cultural biases of individuals are presented. Some definitions of culture and dimensions, layers and descriptions of differences among cultures are reviewed. Culture models of Hofstede and Schwartz are reviewed and a special questionnaire to specify cultural values is explained. A preliminary model for cultural agents is described briefly and simulation of a cultural agent in Fuzzy Clips environment is reported.

It is envisaged that this functionality is going to increase. Even though this increase of functionality is highly desirable, it is anticipated that there will bean interface problem between the simulation tools and environments, similar to the interface problems in computer-aided software engineering (CASE) tools and environments. The problem is diagnosed and a solution is proposed.
