Being the gateway of Islam in the pre-Hispanic Philippines, the site has become instrumental to the nation’s cultural development and has possessed a significant value in establishing an Islamic legacy in the country. In its 643rd founding anniversary, it has undergone a massive rehabilitation and has faced preservation threats that needed urgent attention and collaborative solutions from the local government, heritage agencies, and national administration. This study will further establish the significant presence of the site and its contribution to Philippine heritage as it assesses its cultural value from the lens of Islamic teachings and leading Islamic historians, local regulatory frameworks, and tourism principles; identifies its conservation challenges based on basic conservation principles, architectural guidelines, and heritage zone protocols provided by the State; and provides recommendations in maintenance of its remaining materials. It will answer the question of why discussing Sheikh Karimul Makhdum Mosque’s condition is considered instrumental in assessing the status of Islamic heritage preservation in this multicultural nation, and explore how such enterprise reflects the locals’ attitude towards heritage preservation in this culture that is oriented towards modernization.

The interdisciplinary nature of the subject acquaints us not only with the musical past but also with understanding of its social, musical, cosmological, and pedagogical culture. Though the antiquity of the subject and rarity of the musical finds pose a challenge in the research, there exists a possibility of gaining an understanding of the musical culture of the ancient past through the corroboration of the material, written, oral, and traditional practices that exist in the archaeology and historical record.

This paper takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying the site by discussing the recovered artifacts and tracing significant literary works penned since the Spanish occupation up to the contemporary period. The findings, which demonstrated vast settlements, widespread production capacities, sustained trade relations with China and Indochina, and uniform burial styles were indications of environmental, cultural, political, industrial, and philosophical realities and activities that existed around the area.
