Research paper thumbnail of Estimation of Human Exposure to Bacterial Pathogens in Drinking Water of Philippine Passenger Ships

Food Science and Technology Research, 2005

A human exposure estimation to bacterial pathogens in drinking water of Philippine inter-island p... more A human exposure estimation to bacterial pathogens in drinking water of Philippine inter-island passenger vessels was done. The calculation of estimated microbial intake per person per voyage was based on the voyage travel time, average water consumption per voyage and estimated microbial contamination level of water consumed. A model that detailed ship drinking water flow diagram and order of change in microbial concentration was used in the estimation of microbial contamination level. Results of the study indicated that possibility of infection relative to established infective doses of Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella typhi and pathogenic strains of Shigella spp. and Eschericia coli exist when raw water is loaded to the ship reservoir specially during extended travel time. Review of policy and implementing guidelines related to drinking water management for Philippine inter-island passenger vessels was recommended.

Food Chemistry, 2009

Phenolic content ranged from 192.7 to 1159.0 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) /100 g dry sample. Antioxidant activities were highest for Dakol, with an EC 50 value of 0.7 ± 0.2 mg/mL for DPPH radical scavenging activity, 2.5 ± 0.5 mg/mL for reducing power, and 2.4 ± 0.3 mg/mL for iron-chelating ability, on a dry basis. However, Haponita had the best inhibitory action on linoleic acid oxidation at 99.4 ± 0.9%. Methanolic sweet potato extracts had higher radical scavenging activity, reducing power and oxidation inhibition than a-tocopherol and higher iron-chelating capacity than ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA). Significant ( * P < 0.05) negative correlation was observed between total phenolic content and the EC 50 for DPPH radical scavenging activity (R = À0.826), reducing power (R = À0.876) and iron-chelating capacity (R = -0.800).
