Coming from mixed-method research, which is an explanatory sequential research design; this paper aims to provide only the qualitative, practical manifestations and validations of the variables previously tested and analysed quantitatively.Design/methodology/approachA case study approach was used whereby open-ended, semi-structured series of interviews was conducted to extract narratives from two owner–managers of medium-scale manufacturer-exporter agro-processing firms in the Philippines. Thematic analysis using deductive reasoning was used to analyse the collected narratives.FindingsThe analysis showed qualitative evidence of a possible intervention of entrepreneurial orientation and dynamic capabilities between the effects of the hostile environment brought about by the pandemic on the firms’ expo...

Community members served as partners in identifying and prioritizing their most immediate needs and concerns using a set of social and economic indicators. The indicator system provided objective basis in conducting local level planning and brought confidence toward good governance in the community. Cross comparison of various facilitating and hindering factors (only at initial stages) in the adoption of CBMS in rural and urban communities were also highlighted. Suggestions for improvement and sustainability of the system were likewise discussed in the paper.

Data were gathered through a combination of methods that included a survey of 91 households, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, actual field observations, and secondary data analysis. The study villages are largely rural, popular nationwide for their native sticky rice varieties, and regarded as models in native sticky rice production. There are also areas of wetland for rice cultivation that are suited to grow the age-old native sticky rice varieties. The native rice farmers in these villages are rice self-sufficient because of their household resources and practices. In their households, they possess adequate farming experiences, land parcels, household technology, farm tools, basic farm machinery, organic fertilizers, rice storage system, and positive attitude and unwaver...

Research paper thumbnail of Social Vulnerability and Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change Impacts of Women-headed Households in the Philippines: a Comparative Analysis

Quantitative method following descriptive-correlational research design was employed. Out of 281 WHHs, 162 were randomly selected as the respondents of this study. Descriptive statistics, principal component analysis (PCA), t-test for independent samples, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Women-headed households in the two remote coastal communities have moderate to high vulnerability in terms of demographic, economic, and social factors. No significant difference was found in their level of social vulnerability; however, a substantial difference was found in the adaptive capacity of the respondents from the East and North coastal communities. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the number of household members with disabilities, affiliation with social gr...

One group pre and post test design was used in the study. The study was conducted during four weeks in 2012- 2013 academic year in an elementary school in the city centre of Denizli, Turkey. The study group was consisted of 17 female and 14 males in total 31 seventh grade students. When pre and post test results were compared it was found that students’ achievement in writing skill was increased after the experiment. Students’ writing disposition was also increased when compared to their levels before the experiment. However, students’ attitude to English course was not increased after the experiment. Results indicate that using creative writing exercises has a positive effect on writing achievement and writing disposition in 7th grade English language classes in elementary schools. Fifteen science and math high school teachers and 138 students participated in the survey. Descriptive statistics were used to present the results of the study. Analysis of variance was employed to examine if differences between respondent groups and across year levels were significant. Correlation analysis was, likewise, used to find out relationships between selected variables. Level of significance was set at α=.05. Results showed that the most common place of access to a computer for students and teachers is in the school and the workplace, respectively. Internet cafes ranked as the next most common place of computer access for students and the home for teachers. Interviews also revealed that they also encounter connectivity problem with the school network system which is perceived as a hindrance to the ful...

The efficiency and applicability of linear regression and logit regression procedures as statistical models for path analysis of mixed variables were compared along the criteria of model goodness-of-fit, predictive efficiency, and effect adequacy. Based on the criteria used, logit regression procedure has been shown to be a more efficient statistical tool than the classical linear regression procedure, when investigating pattern of causal relationships among variables at different levels of measurement. Implications of the study on distance education as a nontraditional mode of study and on achievement of adult distance learners were also presented.

Such a struggle is primarily due to the complexities of problem-solving. Students deal with these struggles by employing mechanisms that could be classified into either problem-focused or emotion-focused coping strategies. The study was implemented through a design-research approach by using a model-building framework with four stages: 1) analysis; 2) development; 3) implementation/validation; and 4) evaluation. The models with the two variables were also linked to the student’s sexual orientation and academic programs. Through descriptive statistical measures, such as frequency count and percentages, difficulties were enumerated through the administration of a problem- solving test. It should be noted, however, that a respondent may have at least one difficulty in the different phases of problem-solving. Two hundred and ninety-se...

Its psychometric properties have been widely investigated under the classical test theory (CTT). This study explored the application of the polytomous Rasch partial credit model (PCM) in evaluating the USDI using response data from a sample of Filipino university students (n = 441). Using sequential tests under the Rasch measurement framework, model fitting was performed through item-and person-fit analyses to detect and address possible sources of measurement noise, followed by tests of local independence and differential item functioning (DIF). Results revealed that the original scale contained five misfitting items (6, 7, 10, 12, 20); hence, the deletion of such items was proposed to provide a new but psychometrically sound measure of student depression. Further analysis of the data detected person misfits whose responses were removed in subsequent analyses of local independence and DIF. One pair of locally dependent items (25, 26) and three gender-biased items (1, 3, 8) were detected, which necessitates further item review for possible idiosyncratic meanings. This study showed that Rasch analysis of self-reported questionnaires like the USDI can complement factor analytic approaches, especially in the detection of multiple sources of measurement errors that may undermine the quality of survey data.

To analyze the effect of flipped classroom with peer instruction on Chemistry achievement, a two-group quasi-experimental pretest-posttest research design was used. In addition, student perception and participation were conducted using a post-implementation survey. In the flipped classroom with peer instruction, the students were introduced to the lesson using the science courseware developed by the Department of Science and Technology and YouTube videos as pre-class activities. The in-class activity was focused on answering concept questions through peer instruction. Findings show that the two groups of students significantly increased their Chemistry achievement after the implementation of the teaching strategies. However, the students in the flipped classroom with peer instruction had higher Chemistry achievement, high...
