It was a happy Saturday morning last January 30 for children at the AFP Medical Hospital. Members of U.P. Tomo-Kai held a two-hour program for them as part of an outreach effort in cooperation with Kythe. A circle of chairs was set-up between the elevators on the sixth floor. 10 children, together with their parents, their doctor and some of the nurses, mingled with TK members as the organization was introduced. The main program was a story-telling session of Roberto Alonzo’s “Si Daginding: Ang Unang Daga sa Buwan”. The story was narrated by applicant Sarah Guinto and enacted in a skit by Aaron Maravilla complete with mouse ears and snout. David Genesis Cruz and Razel Navalta performed as extras during the reading. “Masaya, sobrang saya. Masarap yung feeling na nakikitang tumatawa yung mga bata, “ Aaron said after the performance. The book was donated to the hospital after the reading, but the fun didn’t end there. TK members joined the children in the games “Hep Hep Hooray!” and “Stop Dance”, with Luke Granada as the host. Razel Navalta, Lee Serafico and Ace Longkit helped some of the shyer children get into the mood by coaching them and dancing with them. Winners received a drawing pad. When the games ended, the children and their parents were given sandwiches and a cup of juice. Their doctor and the nurses were also given food and drink. While everyone ate, Noe Rivera and Luke Granada performed a song number about Daginding and his dreams of reaching the moon. The children were asked what they dreamed to be in the future- to be doctors, soldiers, and the like. These were incorporated into the song. Although the program only lasted two hours, TK was able to bring smiles to the children’s faces and teach them through a story that with hard work and determination, you can fulfill your dreams no matter how impossible they seem to be. ____________ _________ _________ _

To commemorate the 64 years that had passed since the Hiroshima Atomic bombings (that led to the death of about 140,000 people), TK members and friends folded over a thousand origami cranes and sent it to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Japan, sending with it the wish for world peace. The following article accompanied the cranes, written by TK president (and former exchange student in Hiroshima), Razel Andrea Navalta.

Tomo-Kai, is a duly recognized socio-cultural student organization in the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Each year, the organization plays a part in establishing activities that aim to deepen the relationship between and among us Filipinos and the Japanese. One of the main goals of our events is to uphold the Philippine culture and tradition, as well as promote that of Japan. In our 19th anniversary celebration this year, we aim to highlight the cultural heritage, strengthen the ties and contribute in nurturing cultural harmony between the Philippines and Japan. With the theme, “_Tomo ni Hibiku Futatsu no Koe (Two voices echoing together): 19 Years of Cultural Harmony” we further our efforts in espousing harmony amidst cultural diversity. As we commemorate the ties that bond the Philippine and Japanese cultures, we heighten our awareness of the origin of the camaraderie between these two nations and embark on appreciating both cultures. Furthermore, as part of our growth as individuals and as an organization, we want to reach out to the global society because we believe that as young citizens of the world, we have the potential to change the world into a better place. The world in the 21st century has aimed for global integration but as the world tries to reach its goals, it is confronted by the biggest problems it has ever faced—poverty, global warming, economic recessions, social unrest and nuclear proliferation. However, we, the youth, also live at a time when we are given a chance to create and work together on a global scale in order to shift the direction of progress towards the betterment of the place we live in. Over the years, there have been hundreds of movements, organizations and individuals, all over the world, who has been working for peace. One would think that it is impossible to attain world peace, but for these peace movers, the seemingly impossible is possible. Right now, we are given the chance to be a part of the movement—and we are grabbing the opportunity. The U.P. Tomo-Kai members made 1000 paper cranes to show our support in promoting world peace. We wish to surpass national boundaries and strive continuously to help solve the problems that assault mankind. We want to be the voice here in the Philippines of the hundreds of people who suffered and died due to the bombing of Japan.Together with the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we push to promote peace until our voices reach the hearts of the people all over the world. For being one with us in this endeavor, UP Tomo-Kai would like to extend its gratitude to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, UP Diliman for taking onto itself the task of sending the cranes to Japan. ![]()

July 29 EAT MY HOT BREAD STICK, BABEH!: Wasabi-Eating ContestWednesday • 4:00 pm • Roces Ave. (between FC and AS) If you're the type who likes your bread hot, then come join UP Tomo-Kai's wasabi-eating contest! Contestants battle out to consume a container of wasabi the fastest-- and don't worry, they won't eat the wasabi alone, but with bread sticks (and with a friend). The winning pair will receive 1,500php worth of special prizes. July 30 KISSATEN Thursday •1:00 pm • Palma Hall 2nd floor lobby With the growing burden of school and extra-curricular work, Tomo-Kai is here to help UP students unwind. The 2nd floor AS lobby shall once again serve as a sanctuary amidst the chaos, with TK serving Kapeng Barako, green tea and biscuits to tired souls. The Tomo-Kai Library, with its collection of manga, magazines, books, Pinoy komiks, and other readables, shall entertain guests. Everything is free of charge, of course. July 31 CULTURAL NIGHTFriday • 6:00 pm • Aldaba Hall UP Tomo-Kai's 19th anniversary week shall end with a bang, as a night of cultural performances is set to amaze audiences once again. Traditional and contemporary aspects of both Philippine and Japanese cultures will be featured from different personalities, organizations and TK members and friends. Dinner will also be served. Set at the humble home of the organization that is the tambayan, members gathered last June 29, 2009 for a rather simple activity: the Members’ Re-orientation. Its purpose was to “re-orient” the members of the basics of UP Tomo-Kai.The activity opened with a game (Titigan Game) to liven up the people in attendance. It surely served its purpose leaving the members energized for the re-orientation. The re-orientation proper was divided into four extremely short “courses” which were wittingly called TK 101, Consti 101, Work Ethics 101, and App 101. Four speakers were asked for each “course”.First in line was TK 101 with Razel Andrea Navalta, current President of UP Tomo-Kai, as speaker. She talked about the things which may be considered as core concepts of the organization, that includes what UP Tomo-Kai is, the Senpai-Kouhai Relationship, and the Unwritten Rules.Next stop was Consti 101 with 2009 Constitutional Review Committee member, David Genesis Cruz, also current Vice-President of UP Tomo-Kai, as speaker. He highlighted the changes made in the March 2009 Amendment.Work Ethics 101 had Elia Joy Casimiro, current Alumni Relations and Extension Services Committee (ARESCOM) Head, as speaker. She listed easy ways to maintaining good working relationship amongst members.Last, and definitely not the least, was App 101 with Marie Rose Joy Villar, current Membership Committee (MEMCOM) Head, as speaker. She discussed the do’s and don’ts (as members) in the application process. This “course” was considered vital with the absence of an application process in the preceding semester.Although only two hours long, the re-orientation proved to be a simple yet meaningful experience for the members. It was made even more special with the attendance of no less than Alvin Tan, one of the founding members of UP Tomo-Kai.

Of course, not! Proving they are ever ready and versatile, TK responded to the call of the second largest cosmetic franchise in the world, The Body Shop, to provide that distinct Hapon touch for the relaunching of their Japanese Cherry Blossom limited edition fragrance range, as well as celebration of Earth Day.
Last 15th of April, 2009, Wednesday, TK members took a break from the heat and summer classes and headed to Makati City. Eight members, namely Bianca Canoza, Elia Casimiro, Abby Chua, Paolo Cruz, Janna Diaz, Yzzy Dumasig, Noe Rivera and Arlaj Turingan, were dressed to impress as they performed Eisa (Chunjun Nagari and Asadoya Yunta) in front of The Body Shop outlets in SM Makati, Glorietta and Greenbelt. Yosakoi and Toshindoi were also performed in Greenbelt, where the relaunching program proper took place. Many mall-goers and of course, fellow TK members, witnessed the spectacle.This event hopefully helped UP Tomo-Kai share and promote its visions to many people.
