A list of criteria was developed based on other lists of criteria, a South African research data repository workshop and several internal and external discussions and surveys. Two commercial and four open source research data repositories were short listed for evaluation. By end February 2017 we should know which repository the University will be prepared to fund and implement. The University is also keen to investigate the possibility of forming a consortium with other South African Universities in order to obtain the best research data platform at a good price.

The non-empirical part consists of a critical literature review to synthesise the strengths, weaknesses (limitations) and omissions of identified VRE models as found in literature to develop a conceptual VRE model. As part of the critical literature review concepts were clarified and possible applications of VREs in research lifecycles and research data lifecycles were explored. The empirical part focused on the practical application of this model. This part of the article follows an interpretivist paradigm, and a qualitative research approach, using case studies as inquiry method. Case studies with a positivist perspective were selected through purposive sampling, and infere...

At the University of Pretoria the approach has been to support researchers throughout the research process covering the whole research data cycle. The idea is to facilitate/capture the research data throughout the research cycle. This will give context to the data and will add provenance to the data. The University of Pretoria uses the UK Data Archive’s research data cycle model, to align its Research Data Management project-development. This model identifies the stages of a research data cycle as: creating data, processing data, analysing data, preserving data, giving access to data, and reusing data. This paper will give a short overview of the chronological development of research data management at the University of Pretoria. The overview will also highlight findings of two surveys done at the University, one in 2009 and one in 2013. This will be ...
