Building upon the concept of a Traffic Information Centre (TIC), MOTIC provides a European architecture for a traffic information, mobility management and supervision centre including: (1) integration of data and information of different transport modes coming from different sources in the transport network, including traffic control centres (TCC), TICs, traffic operators (police, automobile associations), local authorities (traffic planners, public transport companies); (2) integration of TIC-based functions, including traffic message processing and dispatching, generation, update and maintenance of multi-modal traffic information; (3) provision of added-value information services for travellers, to be operated and offered to the users by the relevant service operators (public, private or through public-private partnerships); and (4) provision of an information base and several software tools to support traffic managers and planners in analysing traffic scenarios, designing strategic traffic management measures and distributing such information to the local, internetworked information and control centres for implementation on the network. The concept of MOTIC is based on the use of open standards which will satisfy the needs of the providers of traffic information services and will ease the integration of the various information sources on the network. MOTIC development and demonstrations are carried out in the framework of the Telematics Applications Programme within the ENTERPRICE project (Enhanced Network for Traffic SErvices and InfoRmation Provided by Regional Information Centres in Europe). Pilot applications are being implemented in the Hessian region (Germany), in the EURODelta corridor (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), in the region around Copenhagen (Denmark) and in Switzerland (region around Berne, Basel-Chiasso motorway). The paper describes the overall concept of MOTIC and, particularly, the upper level strategy management functionalities made available to traffic managers within the Mobility Strategy Centre. It provides a comprehensive approach to understanding the dynamics and patterns of individual behaviors over time. In the context of the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona, applying sequence analysis to the mobility surveys offers valuable insights into the sequencing and order of travel activities and modes, shedding light on the complex interrelationship between individuals, their travel choices, and the built environment. The Barcelona travel surveys collect detailed data on individuals' travel behavior, such as trip purpose, duration, mode of transportation, and origin-destination pairs. Sequence analysis allows for examining travel behaviors as dynamic processes, unveiling travel patterns' underlying structure and evolution in a day. A data analytics methodological approach is described; it enables the identification of common travel patt...

However, during the last decade, the diversity of these tools has been seen grooving. Indeed, the classical planning (macro) software packages, generally based on static paradigms, were no more the only type of application available to face transport engineering challenges. Due, among other reasons, to the permanent computation power progresses, more disaggregated and dynamic models appeared on the field. This is the case of the microscopic, the nowadays most used model for operational studies, and the mesoscopic which, even if the concepts exist for many years, only recently started to be seen as an interesting compromise between macro and micro. With the presence on the market of these three types of traffic simulation approach, too many people have an unfortunate tendency to compare them in order to ...

Origin-Destination (OD) trip matrices describe the patterns of traffic behavior across the networ... more Origin-Destination (OD) trip matrices describe the patterns of traffic behavior across the network and play a key role as primary data input to many traffic models. OD matrices are a critical requirement, either in static or dynamic models for traffic assignment. However, OD matrices are not yet directly observable, thus, the current practice consists of adjusting an initial or a priori matrix from link flow counts, speeds, travel times and other aggregate demand data. This information is provided by an existing layout of traffic counting stations, as the traditional loop detectors. The availability of new traffic measurements provided by ICT applications offers the possibility to formulate and develop more efficient algorithms, especially suited for real-time applications. However, the efficiently strongly depends, among other factor, on the quality of the seed matrix. This paper proposes an integrated computational framework in which an off-line procedure generates the time-sliced OD matrices, which are the input to an on-line estimator. The paper also analyzes the sensitivity of the on-line estimator with respect to the available ICT traffic measurements.

This is done by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of traffic data with support of the findings of a benchmark study. The benchmark framework is designed to assess the performance of the dynamic OD estimation methods using different traffic data. Results show that despite the use of traffic condition data to identify traffic regime, the use of unreliable prior OD demand has a strong influence on estimation ability. The greatest estimation occurs when the prior OD demand information is aligned with the real traffic state or omitted and using information from automatic vehicle identification (AVI) measurements to establish accurate and meaningful values of OD demand. A common feature observed by methods in this paper indicates that advanced traffic data require more research attention and new techniques to turn them into usable information.

Microscopic simulation appears as perhaps the most suitable tool to analyze dynamic guidance systems, combining the ability to capture the full dynamics of the time dependent traffic phenomena with the capability to track individual vehicles. This paper presents and discusses the simulation results for a real urban network with the AIMSUN2 microsimulator. The simulation experiments analyze the expected benefits depending on the quality of the used routes. (A*) For the covering abstract see ITRD E110327.

Both are based on the concept of decision support system, and propose decision support systems for traffic management for two types of situations: a road network managed by a unique traffic control centre, and an area, possibly a metropolitan one, subdivided in zones each one under the control of a different traffic control centre with possibly different control strategies, that would require a certain level of coordination to improve the performance of the whole system. The proposed architectures are based on a short term demand forecasting and a microscopic simulator to estimate network states, current and forecast. The paper mainly discusses the role of the microscopic simulation, its computing performance for real-time applications when parallelization is taken into account, and briefly discusses some preliminary results on the system validation.
