This paper contributes to the description of this new emergent genre from both a multimodal and a cognitive point of view, by exploring how diverse semiotic channels in digital storytelling provide different kinds of information (factual, emotional, cultural, etc.) which are finally integrated to construct the global meaning of the narrative. For this purpose, we combine Kress and Van scholarly work related to multimodal representation, with the use of some notions of the Mental Spaces and Conceptual Integration theory . The results of this study are of interest to those concerned with the representational and communicational modes of semiotic resources in storytelling.

Evidence is provided that males talk for longer and make for frequent contributions than females in formal speech. A case study is presented as an example of how women tend to talk less in for mal, institutional contexts. The paper ends with some suggestions of ways in

Multiword units have been chosen with WORDSMITH TOOLS, regarding frequency of use a key factor. The conclusions point out that these multiword units are highly productive in oral and written maritime discourse and worthy of investigation. They reveal that both denotative (in terminological collocations) and evaluative meanings may be embedded in lexical-semantic structures. The lexicographical description of these collocations in learner’s dictionaries available in Maritime English ends with the recognition that development of collocations seems necessary if we are to w...

Non-verbal markers related to key areas of modal expression are presented; (1)epistemic adverbs and adverbial expressions, (2) epistemic adjectives, (3) deontic adjectives, (4) evidential adverbs, (5) evidential adjectives, (6) evidential interpersonal markers, and (7) single adverbials conveying the speaker's attitudes, feelings or value judgments. The overall aim is to present an overview of how these non-verbal markers operate in this LSP genre. An examination of the data show that in expressing stance, MarENG speakers and writers use three primary means: epistemic adjectives are more frequent than epistemic adverbs, the deontic adjectives necessary and essential, and centralized assessment adjectives combining with intensifiers, mainly with a positive axiology. They are also keen on more subtle and less subjective evaluative devices like adjectives pertaining to time, novelty, importance such as new or recent. Future research includes the study of verbal modality markers in MarENG.
