Adolescent Cyber-Aggressor scale (CYB-AGS). This scale is composed of 18 items that measure direct
and indirect cyberbullying. A cross-sectional study was conducted using two independent samples of
adolescents. The first sample included 1318 adolescents (52.6% girls) from 12 to 16 years old (M = 13.89,
SD = 1.32). The second sample included 1188 adolescents (48.5% boys) from 12 to 16 years old
(M = 14.19, SD = 1.80). First, to study the psychometric properties of the CYB-AGS, exploratory factor
analysis was performed on Sample 1. Results indicated a two-factor structure: direct cyber-aggression
and indirect cyber-aggression. Second, to verify the structure of the CYB-AGS, we selected Sample 2 to
conduct confirmatory factor analysis and test the scale’s convergent validity with theoretically-related
measures. Results confirmed the reliability and validity of the two-dimensional model. Moreover,
measurement invariance was established. Finally, regarding convergent validity, positive correlations
were obtained between cyberbullying and aggressive behaviors in school, anger expression, negative
attitudes towards school, and transgression of norms. Furthermore, negative correlations were found
between cyberbullying and attitudes towards institutional authority.

Social concern about the negative effects of cyberbullying in children and adolescents' psychosoc... more Social concern about the negative effects of cyberbullying in children and adolescents' psychosocial development is currently increasing. The importance of the family environment and factors in bullying has been highlighted, but little is known about the role of parenting styles in adolescents' engagement in cyberaggression and cy-bervictimization. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships of parenting styles (authoritative, indulgent , authoritarian, and neglectful) and cyberbullying (cybervictimization and cyberaggression) in adolescents , also considering sex and age. Participants were 2399 Spanish adolescents, 50.2% boys, aged between 12 and 18 years old (M age = 14.69, SD age = 1.82). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA, 4 × 2 × 2) was performed, with parenting styles, sex, and age (12-14 years and 15-18 years) as independent variables and cybervictimization and cyberaggression as criteria. Possible interaction effects were also analyzed. Results showed main effects of parenting styles, sex, and age, as well as an interaction effect between sex and parenting styles. Girls suffered more cybervictimization than boys, whereas boys performed higher levels of cyberag-gression than girls. Results suggested that authoritarian parenting style was a risk factor for cyberviolence. Girls from authoritarian families scored highest on cybervictimization. Boys from indulgent families were less involved in cybervictimization. These findings highlight the importance of establishing positive and open communication between parents and adolescents. The implications are discussed.

Participating in this study were 1304 Spanish students of both sexes (53.1% girls), aged between 12 and 18 years (M = 13.87, SD = 1.33). Multivariate analyses of variance were performed. The results showed significant relationships between parental socialization styles, school adjustment and cyber-aggression. It was observed that adolescents from indulgent and authoritative families showed greater academic competence and greater family involvement. Additionally, the children from authoritarian families displayed greater involvement in direct and indirect cyber-aggression behaviours. The results obtained and their implications are discussed in the final section.

Random sampling by conglomerates was performed. A total of 8115 adolescents participated in the study (51.5% boys, 49.5% girls), and were aged between 11 and 16 years old (M = 13.34, SD = 1.04) and enrolled in the State of Nuevo León (Mexico). A structural equations model was developed using the Structural Equation Modeling Software (EQS). The results showed that problematic family communication is directly associated with cyberbullying, and also indirectly through the relationships of psychological distress and attitude towards transgression of social norms with the problematic use of social networking sites. The multi-group analyses also revealed gender differences in these relationships. Finally, the obtained results were discussed and their practical implications were shown.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Prev@cib bullying and cyberbullying program, drawing on three theoretical frameworks: the ecological model, empowerment theory, and the model of personal and social responsibility. The Prev@cib program was evaluated using a repeated-measures pre-post-test design with an experimental group and a
control group. The sample consisted of 660 adolescents between 12 and 17 years old (M = 13.58, SD = 1.26), randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. Repeated-measures ANOVA of pre-post-test scores were conducted. Results showed a significant decrease in bullying and victimization and cyberbullying and cybervictimization in the experimental group, compared to the control group, indicating that the Prev@cib program is effective in reducing bullying and cyberbullying. Taking into account the harmful effects of these types of violence, the results have important implications in the prevention of these behaviors because they provide scientific evidence of the program’s effectiveness.

This scale is composed of 18 items that assess direct and indirect cyber-victimization. Two subsamples participated in the present study. Sample 1 included 1318 adolescents (47.4% boys) from 12 to 16 years old (M = 13.89, SD = 1.32). Sample 2 was composed of 1188 adolescents (51.5% girls) from 12 to 16 years old (M = 14.19, SD = 1.80). First, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted on sample 1. Results yielded a bifactor structure: direct cyber-victimization and indirect cyber-victimization. To confirm the structure of the CYBVICS, we selected sample 2 to perform confirmatory factor analysis and test its convergent validity with theoretically related measures. The results supported the reliability and validity of the two-factor model. In addition, measurement invariance was established. Related to convergent validity, positive correlations between cyber-victimization and peer victimization, depressive symptoms, and offensive communication with the mother and the father were found. Moreover, negative correlations were found between cyber-victimization and open communication with the mother and the father and family self-esteem.

Research paper thumbnail of New Directions for Preventing Dating Violence in Adolescence: The Study of Gender Models

Dating violence is a huge transcultural and alarming phenomenon, directly linked with endless dis... more Dating violence is a huge transcultural and alarming phenomenon, directly linked with endless discrimination against women. The latest research on dating violence in adolescence shows how dating violence is persistent and common in the adolescent period as well and pinpoints the origin of gender violence from first adolescent relationships. This element takes us to considerate how recent gender violence studies and policies, increased also thanks to international efforts on this issue, are not bringing expected results, especially among young people. This mini-review aims to analyze the main characteristics of current gender studies and policies on dating violence, focusing on percentages with a woman-centered approach, which stresses the consequences of gender violence. Other gender studies, that consider gender as a relational product, stress the importance of integrating the analysis of gender models as a key instrument to understand the main causes of dating violence, providing new elements to develop effective policies against dating violence. Indeed, gender models of femininity and masculinity are based on a binary system, which is also a reciprocal recognition and identity system: gender models define female and male characteristics, roles, stereotypes, and expectation, being complementary and foreclosing at the same time. Recent studies on gender relationships, especially among the youth, allows us to propose a new dialog between dating violence studies and gender model studies, underling the need of a complete and complex understanding of gender structure, and of its tensions and contradictions, to put an end to gender and dating violence, through effective programs.

Previous research has found that adolescents who engage in a problematic use of social networking sites are likely to show maladjustment problems. However, little is known about its links with peer aggression and victimization. The main goal of this study was to analyze the relationship between problematic use of online social networking sites, peer aggression –overt vs. relational and reactive vs. instrumental–, and peer victimization –overt physical and verbal, and relational–, taking into account gender and age (in early and mid-adolescence). Participants were selected using randomized cluster sampling considering school and class as clusters. A battery of instruments was applied to 1,952 adolescents' secondary students from Spain (Andalusia) (50.4% boys), aged 11 to 16 (M = 14.07, SD = 1.39). Results showed that girls and 14–16 adolescents were more involved in a problematic use of online social networking sites. Furthermore, adolescents with high problematic use of online social networking sites were more involved in overt—reactive and instrumental—and relational—reactive and instrumental—aggressive behaviors, and self-reported higher levels of overt—physical and verbal—and relational victimization. Even though boys indicated higher levels of all types of victimization, girls with high problematic use of online social networking sites scored the highest on relational victimization. Relating to age, early adolescents (aged 11–14) with higher problematic use of online social networking sites reported the highest levels of overt verbal and relational victimization. Overall, results suggested the co-occurrence of problematic use of online social networking sites, peer aggression and victimization. In addition, results showed the influence that gender and age had on peer victimization. This study highlights the continuity between offline and online domains with regard to maladjustment problems in adolescence.

The present study analyzed family climate and parenteadolescent communication in the four roles involved in cyberbullying: cybervictims, cyberbullies, cyberbullyevictims, and noneinvolved adolescents. The study had two main objectives: (1) to analyze the differences in family climate (cohesion and conflict) and communication patterns with the mother and father (open, avoidance, and offensive) among the four roles, controlling the variables sex and academic grade; and (2) to determine the predictive weight of these family variables in the roles involved in cyberbullying. A battery of instruments was applied to 1062 adolescents from 12 to 18 years old. The results revealed that the cyberbullyevictim profile had the lowest quality family climate and family communication patterns. In addition, family conflict predicted the role of cyberbullies, and noneopen communication with the mother and avoidant communication with the father predicted the role of cybervictim. Finally, these family variables together (conflict and noneopen and avoidant communication) predicted the role of cyberbullyevictim.

In many studies, delinquency has been associated with exposing others to hostility, while depressive mood has been associated with being a victim of others’ hostility. In this study, we proposed that adolescents with a co-occurrence of high delinquency and depressive mood may be both perpetrators and victims in their relations with parents at home, peers and teachers at school, and other people encountered in leisure time. We studied a normative sample of 1452 mid-adolescents (50.61% boys and 49.38% girls). Cluster analyses found a group with a co-occurrence of high delinquency and high depressive mood. Adolescents in this cluster group were highest on being exposed to hostility, exposing others to hostility, and being involved in mutually hostile interactions with others in different everyday contexts. The findings were especially strong when we examined being a victim and a perpetrator across contexts. The results were similar for boys and girls. We conclude that the co-occurrence of high delinquency and depressive mood among some adolescents is intimately linked to the mutually hostile interactions that these adolescents experience in their everyday interpersonal contexts.

A sample of 2,399 adolescents (50.2% boys and 49.8% girls) enrolled in schools in Andalusia,
aged between 12 and 18 years (M = 14.63, SD = 1.91) participated in the study. A MANOVA 4 × 2 × 2 was carried out. The results showed that high child-to-parent violence was related to high levels of problematic use of social networking sites, alexithymia, and a more positive attitude towards the transgression of social norms. It was also found that adolescents
from families with an indulgent style showed the lowest scores in problematic use of social networking sites, alexithymia, and positive attitude towards the transgression of social norms. Additionally, in situations of high child-to-parent violence, girls had higher scores in problematic use of social networking sites and alexithymia than boys. Finally, the results and their practical implications are discussed.

Socialization is an interactive process through which cultural contents are transmitted and incor... more Socialization is an interactive process through which cultural contents are transmitted and incorporated into the personality of human beings in the form of behaviors and beliefs. It can also be defined as a not formalized and largely unaware learning process by which, through a complex system of interactions, people assimilate the knowledge, attitudes, values, customs, needs, feelings and other cultural patterns that will configure their adaptation styles to environment. In this chapter, four styles of parental socialization (authoritative, indulgent, neglectful and authoritarian) are analyzed from two orthogonal axes (control/ imposition and acceptance/ involvement). In addition, the relationships between these four styles of socialization and the different types of violence in adolescence are explored: parental socialization style and overt and relational school violence (pure, reactive and instrumental); parental socialization style and child-to-parent violence (physical and verbal violence towards the father or the mother). These relationships are based on the correlations and MANOVAs resulting from a recent study with a sample of 2,399 Spanish adolescents. Indulgent style was found as the most functional parental socialization style, followed by the authoritative one.

First, this chapter discusses factors associated with family functioning that may predict cyberbullying, particularly the family climate (cohesion, expressivity, and conflict) and parent–children communication. It also examines the role of parental socialization styles and their continuity with parental styles on the Internet: authoritarian style, laissez-faire, permissive and authoritative. In relation to parental styles, one section in this chapter describes the parental monitoring of Internet use and the various types of parental mediation strategies used by parents to control their children’s online behavior. The chapter ends with a section on preventing cyberbullying in the family itself. It concludes that parent–children communication helps create a positive family climate to implement emotionally suitable socialization styles and, in short, to prevent risky behaviors in children.

Abstract This study analyzes the relationships among peer violence, teaching practices, school environment, and empathy. The sample includes 385 teenagers (219 males and 166 females) (M =12.94, SD =1.77) and one of their parents (M = 42.21, SD = 8.98) from 17 Mexican secondary schools. A structural equation model was constructed using AMOS software. The study results indicate that a non-permissive teaching system and parent's practices aimed to prevent violence have a direct relationship with a reduce peer violence. Moreover, both teaching practices are related indirectly to peer violence, through its effect on school environment and empathy. From the present study, we conclude these practices prevent peer violence, improve the school environment, and foster empathy. Finally, results are discussed and its possible implications as well.
