investigate if they, as their East Scandinavian counterparts, show indications of centrality during
the Scandinavian Iron Age. Of seven studied names, only Tune in Østfold with certainty displays
such properties. It is argued that this name is an expression of a Scandinavian ‘central place
nomenclature’, common but with regional variations, reflecting a prestigious vocabulary connected
with central places.

Such names fall into four categories. The first one contains *ansuz 'as; heathen god' and the second one *albiz 'elf'. The third is made up of names cognate to the adjective *hailaga-'holy', and the fourth of names cognate to another adjective, *wīha-'holy'. Finally, it is argued that names of individual gods do not occur in Proto-Scandinavian personal names, although they do become very popular during the Viking Age.

Fleming's main naming strategy was to choose names that tell us something about the characters, names that correspond to their personalities, their occupations or the roles they play in the stories. This is often achieved by providing them with allusive names that hint at several meanings, using polysemy, etymology, or lexical or even phonological associations. Many of these names are given an explanation in the novels, but underneath this explanation there are always others. Special attention has been paid to the cases where I believe the heroines do not have allusive names. I suggest that this has to do with the fact that these women are the ones with the most complex and real characters, and real characters must have real names.

Discusses the interpretation and localization of two names in the Old Norse poem Ynglingatal.

The chronology of such names – referred to here as 'sacral place names' – is uncertain, however, and many may pre-date the Old Norse period. To assemble a corpus that can shed more definite light on this segment of time, the author attempts to identify sacral place names in areas colonised by Scandinavians during the Viking Age.
