The simultaneous presence of different groups in conflict introduces into the space parallel memory discourses that can be recognised both in the built environment as well as in public sculpture, and both can be read as a symbolic marking of space (Veschambre, 2008). The urban space of northern Istria, where the Italian and Slovene communities have become intertwined throughout history, were drastically marked by the political and historic events of the mid-20th century. Post-war conflict-solving processes lead and an ongoing process of “ethnic metamorphosis” (Purini, 2010) in the region came to a peak when the majoritarian Italian-speaking population of the urban area emigrated, while the space was settled by newcomers from inner Slovenian regions and other Yugoslav republics. Tensions between Slovenes and Italians arose in the early ...

Z opazovanjem stavbnih tipologij, njihove arhitekturne govorice in prostorske umestitve, vključno z vpenjanjem v historični kontekst, poskušamo ugotoviti, kako so se arhitekti spoprijemali z izzivom gradnje nove družbe v kompleksnem, večkulturnem prostoru povojne severne Istre.

Monuments to the WW II liberation struggle in the border region between Slovenia and Italy, namely Istria, are the mirrors of conflicting memories at the international and regional level between the two countries and ethnicities, living in the region. As material sites of official memory at the same time, monuments reflect tensions with the individual memories and persistent collective silence decades after the fall of the official memory of the previous Yugoslavian system.

The urban planning concepts that formed the "Slovenian Coast" and followed the migration processes are explored. The solutions for the Slovenian Coast are compared with contemporary urban plans for Trieste, set in a larger historical framework. Certain interventions in "ethnically pure" locations (new settlements called 'borghi' on the Karst boundary surrounding Trieste; new construction in the Venetian core of Capodistria) are highlighted, and approaches in the design of new urban areas and two symbolic spaces of representations on both sides of the border are compared.

subaltern, inclusive), especially in the significance assessment phase. After reviewing the existing and developing cases of the use of ethnographic methods, it summarises
past experiences and the role of ethnological conservation in Slovenia, which represents a reference and a potential for contemporary approaches. The article highlights the importance of ethnographic research in the significance assessment of cultural
heritage in contested spaces, through the case of attitudes towards built heritage in Slovenian coastal towns.

Regular attention and maintenance can slow down the process of decay or, in specific cases, even partially prevent it. That is why an organization was founded in the Netherlands, in the Flemish Region of Belgium, and elsewhere in Europe with a goal based on the very elementary belief that prevention is better than cure, but in this case applied to cultural heritage. Monumentenwacht offers a systematic inspection system focusing on maintenance and preventive conservation and has developed a database for member, object, and inspection information. After almost twenty years of experience, the organization is now in a phase of professionalization of applied technology to develop an integrated condition-reporting database. The question is whether this ne...

Maintenance and monitored based preventive preservation involves more people and local craftsmen in the process. The paper investigates some examples of different implementations of maintenance services in Europe according to the Dutch model of Monumentenwacht, namely in Belgium, in Denmark and in Hungary. Their role as stimulator of enhancement of traditional crafts is examined, as they are considered to contribute to preservation of local intangible heritage and to community involvement. The role of such organisations as (independent) supporters to heritage owners or site managers is highlighted.

Case-studies of chosen Slovenian urban centres illustrate the consequences of drastic population change after the Second World War and of the transformation of power relations after Slovenia's independence which brought changes in the political-ideological and economic system. As the authors observed, memories and heritage of Italian, German and Yugoslav inhabitants are often mute and silenced within the contemporary Slovenian hegemonic/authorised heritage discourse. Consequences of changes in social relations were also recognised at the micro level in the valorisation of the socialist heritage of industrial plants and military barracks. Today, these places are left to decay as the material reminders of the unwanted (pre-WWII or socialist) past or they are transformed into centres of youth culture, creative industries or administrative centres. However, such reinterpretation does not enable their former users to access them and claim them as their own heritage.
