A meaning number of mechanisms of attack can lead to a web service system crash. As a result, the web service cannot allow the access to authorized users. This type of attacks is so-called as denial of service attack (DoS) which affects the availability of the services and resources. This paper presents an approach to detect and classify DoS attacks, based on Case-based Reasoning methodology where heterogeneous data are merged in order to obtain a set of cases that reflect previous analysis. The proposal has two peculiarities: (i) when a web service is attacked, this possible attack is studied by different analysers, distributing previous experiences among the analysers, in order to classify attacks in a better way; and (ii) the analysis process against attacks is temporal bounded allowing its use in environments with temporal constraints.

For this reason, the multi-agent system paradigm seems to be appropriate for real-time system development. In the case of distributed real-time systems, complexity is added when a node must delegate a task with temporal restrictions to another node. This delegation can be modeled as a commitment act in a multi-agent system. This paper presents a commitment management framework that is specifically designed for real-time agents. This framework allows the agent to decide (in a bounded time) if it has the necessary resources and time to do the required task, and thus accept the commitment. This paper also presents an execution example that shows how this framework works.

However, these toolkits have certain deficiencies when applied in specific environments (i.e. real-time environments). In these environment there may be strict temporal restrictions that require the use of specific agent architectures. Since these architectures are not covered in the development process of existing tools, this paper presents a new toolkit for the implementation of real-time multi-agent systems based on the jART platform.

It spans from individual decision-making trade-offs such as deciding what to do next (sleep, eat, work, play), to complex scenarios including politics and business. The social sciences, psychology, economy, and biology study the nature of conflict, its consequences, and strategies to successfully deal with it. Over the last decades computer science has joined those disciplines and studies conflict from a computational perspective. This special issue presents a selection of the best papers presented at the First Workshop of Conflict Resolution in Decision Making (COREDEMA). The workshop focused on computational approaches that tackle conflict in order to provide new insights and explore potential applications. The workshop was jointly hosted with the 12th International Conference on Practical Applications of Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (PAAMS) in Salamanca, Spain, from June 4 to 6, 2013.

This support is especially required for the next generation of systems that focus on open, dynamic, and adaptive applications. In this paper, we analyze the current state of the art regarding approaches that tackle the adaptation issue in these agent societies. We survey the most relevant works up to now in order to highlight the most remarkable features according to what they support and how this support is provided. In order to compare these approaches, we also identify different characteristics of the adaptation process that are grouped in different phases. Finally, we discuss some of the most important considerations about the analyzed approaches, and we provide some interesting guidelines as open issues that should be required in future developments.

For ensuring social order, norms have been employed as coordination mechanisms. However, the dynamical features of open systems may cause that norms loose their validity and need to be adapted.
