It is found mostly in children, primarily infants, toddlers, and pre-school pupils. However, pure testicular rhabdomyosarcoma is a very rare tumor and few cases have been reported in literature. The tumor usually presents as a painless testicular enlargement with early dissemination via the blood stream and lymphatics. The origin of this tumor is presumed to be from overgrowth of a sarcomatous area of the teratoma. Here, we present a case of testicular rhabdomyosarcoma in a 15-year-old student with a fatal outcome during chemotherapy. This is actually the first case of pure testicular rhabdomyosarcoma diagnosed in this centre after over 10 years.

Colon cancers were evaluated for microsatellite instability (MSI), mismatch repair (MMR) genes and NRAS, KRAS and BRAF mutations using routine molecular diagnostics. Fluorescence in-situ hybridisation/immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate the Her2Neu status in breast cancers.ResultsThere was high correlation between WGS and routine diagnostic testing results irrespective of TMB status in colon cancers. Her2Neu status was discordant in 3 out of the 5 TMB-high breast cancers (p=0.049). The presence of ductal carcinoma in-situ correlated significantly with discordance (p=0.04). There were 3 (5%) discordant colorectal cases, all in the KRAS g...

Adenocarcinoma of the prostate is the commonest form of cancer in men and the second leading caus... more Adenocarcinoma of the prostate is the commonest form of cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer death. Not much is known about the aetiology of prostatic cancer. We report a rare case of prostatic adenocarcinoma coexisting with schistosomiasis of the prostate, and review of literature. The association between schistosomiasis and cancer has been well documented in bladder cancer, implicating the genotoxic effect of chronic inflammatory process from the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the nitrosating action of bacterial infection. There are no data yet proving the association of this disease with prostate neoplasia. The theory of the genotoxic effect of chronic inflammatory process may explain a "cause and effect" association between prostate cancer and schistosomiasis. A pertinent question therefore is, does schistosomiasis cause tumorigenesis in all tissues affected? This is the first record of prostatic schistosomiasis in association with prostatic cancer in our centre.

It is now known gastric cancer is 2-3 times higher in males than females living in the same environment. We aim to describe the comprehensive histological characteristics of gastric cancer with age and sex distribution. The study site was Jos University Teaching Hospital situated in the capital of Plateau State. The hospital has a bed capacity of 530. The study materials were obtained from all stained specimens of gastric cancer recorded in the histopathology laboratory of the teaching hospital between 1985 to 2004. The biopsy site was noted. These were divided into the following groups: Cardia, body and an thrum/pyloric regions respectively. Or the information included age and sex of the patients. There were a total of 205 gastric cancer histological confirmed, out of 5705 malignant tumours recorded in the same period. There were a total of 145 cases in male and 60 in females giving a male: female ratio 2.4:1. The highest frequencies of gastric cancers were located in the anthral and cardia regions which accounted for 79% of all the tumours. Well differentiated adenocarcinoma (intestinal type) was the most frequent histological subtypes 51.2%), this was followed by poorly and diffusely infiltrating carcinoma. Other cancers included signet ring carcinoma, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and leiomyosarcoma in that order. The study has also demonstrated H pylori at the background of intestinal type adenocarcinoma which was seen in the body and an thrum. The study has shown that gastric cancer is not only common but it occur more males than females. The high proportion of H pylori in our environment might indicate a possible aetiological association. Therefore eradication of H pylori might reduce the prevalence of gastric carcinoma.

There is a disturbing trend of increased incidence of HCC around the world. We therefore, determined the trend of HCC in Jos. Methods: A ten-year retrospective review was done of all cases of HCC which diagnoses were histologically confirmed as recorded in the Cancer Registry of Jos University Teaching Hospital. The patients' clinical case notes (including surgical and radiological findings) were also reviewed. Results: A total of 71 cases of HCC (31.3% 0f 227 liver biopsies in the same period) were diagnosed within the 10-year period. There were 46 males and 25 females with a male/female ratio of 1.8:1. The age range of the patients was 23 years to 75 years, with a mean age of 45.4±13.1 years. Seventy two percent (72%) of them were between ages 21 years and 50 years. Only 28% were between 51 years and 80 years. The highest rate of 12(17.1%) was seen in the year 2004. Conclusion: The study showed that there was a high prevalence of HCC in Jos, and that HCC was more prevalent in the younger age group compared to what obtains in developed nations.

Sometimes this mimics neoplastic growth. Histopathology of tissues or organs affected usually show chronic granulomatous inflammatory reaction surrounding the schistosome egg(s). We are reporting a rare case of pancreatic schistosomiasis presenting as gastric outlet obstruction. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a granular, firm grayish mass in the head of the pancreas with some fibrosis impinging on the duodenum. The obstruction was relieved and a biopsy taken for histology which showed benign pancreatic tissue with several granulomas comprising aggregates of eosinophils, epithelioid cells and centrally placed schistosome ova. This case mimicked a pancreatic tumour with features of gastric outlet obstruction.

Methods: The record of histological diagnoses of liver biopsies was reviewed. Fresh sections (3-5μ) of archival paraffin embedded tissue were taken and routinely stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E), and special stains such as Perls, Masson trichrome, Orcein and Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS). Archival slides of fine needle aspirations were retrieved. Four pathologists viewed the slides independently for a consensus diagnosis and levels of disparity assessed. The clinical data were obtained from the accompanying request forms. Results: The results of a total of 73 cases of liver cirrhosis were analysed. This constituted 28% of the total liver biopsies in this centre within the study period. Isolated cases of cirrhosis were 53 (72.6%) while cirrhosis coexisting with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was 20 (27.4%). The frequency of cirrhosis per year was relatively higher in the earlier years; 1995-1999 (38; 52%). However, gradual decline was noticed from year 2000-2005 except for the sharp rise in 2004 (11 cases; 15%). There were 56 (77%) males and 17 (23%) females, with a male to female ratio of 3.3:1. The age range of the cases of cirrhosis was five months to 70 years with a mean SD of 41.2±14.9 years. Majority of cases (52; 71.2%) were within ages 21-50 years. Conclusion: This study shows that there is a high prevalence of liver cirrhosis in Jos, North Central Nigeria, and it is more prevalent in relatively younger age group.
