Established ties between people enable communication and knowledge transfer to take place. Key Knowledge Management concepts such as Communities of Practice and Social Network Analysis reinforce further the value placed in the social networks. Yet disciplines such as psychology and sociology have been examining rumour and gossip within the ‘grapevine’ since World War Two. This work has often stressed the negative consequences of rumour and gossip. Contrasting knowledge transfer and rumour provides the basis for a healthy dialogue between the two areas of study.

An analysis of the investigation archive is carried out to determine to what extent one could argue he did not take his own life but was a victim of a British conspiracy. The degree of ambiguity, a key variable in conspiracy theorising, in the extended investigations of Mulgan's death, is considered, as well as any possible motivation for a cover-up.

The Greek government in exile and their British sponsors responded with arrest, starvation, violent suppression and imprisonment in isolated desert camps. The death penalty was sought for the ringleaders. This dramatic episode has been lost from cultural memory. This documentary uses readings from print archives and newspapers from the time, re-enactments, interviews with historians and personal memories.

The Dominion was connected to the Greek military in several theatres and the armed resistance in occupied territories. This was within the context of Commonwealth and Anglo Greek relations and changing Greek political and social forces. Absent from the British and Greek decision-making circles, the New Zealand politico-military elite had to steer their country’s army through often complex, publicly controversial and sometimes violent relations with its Mediterranean ally and Commonwealth leader.

A military dictatorship was followed by invasion and terrifying occupation by Germany and its allies, starvation, civil war, political unrest and mutiny in its free military armed forces. New Zealand entered this arena and found a bond with a people that it still celebrates to this day. Absent from the New Zealand national storytelling is the complex, divisive and sometimes violent and surreal relationship between the two countries and the inescapable influence of Britain. The New Zealand-Greek story stretches from the mountains and open country of Greece and Crete to Middle East deserts, autumn-swept plains of Italy, and the blood-splattered streets of post-liberated Athens. New Zealand official state memory emphasizes some things and ignores the unpalatable. It also conceals its assertiveness with Britain over the latter’s Greek policies.
