This two-part case study of a Canadian knitwear SME called Ca Va de Soi (CVDS) presents an IT project failure (part A) and how the project was “resuscitated” and transformed into a success (part B). The case highlights (1) the challenges and risks of IT projects for SMEs, (2) the importance of evaluating and selecting the right IT supplier and managing relationships, and (3) how, during a retrospective, lessons learned from a project failure can be transferred and applied to other IT projects

We draw on the theory of routines-as-practices and on the organizational ambidexterity literature to analyze organizational practices aiming at both potential for change (exploration) and stability (exploitation). We identify two distinct modes of contextual ambidexterity, whereby one capability is used to improve the other, i.e. ‘exploration for exploitation’, an orientation towards continually improving the quality of the service delivery, and ‘exploration through exploitation’, an approach of project-driven learning. We highlight and classify a multi-layered repertoire of ambidextrous routines across the three levels of analysis: leadership, project team, and client relations. Our findings illustrate elaborate management repertoires of interventions with respect to culture, structures, policies or practices, which are aligne...

The second phase included significant efforts to align the business strategy and organizational structure along with the information system components. These efforts enabled the organization to complete its alignment cycle by integrating its IT infrastructure and processes with the organizational infrastructure and processes, as well as fitting business strategy with the new infrastructure and processes and to reap the maximum value.

We draw on a practice perspective to analyze the spanning practices of boundary shakers – mandated change agents – as they attempt to engage with others in cross-boundary collaborative initiatives that aim at changes as part of the post-merger integration process. Our analysis suggests that some of the pre-merger practices were resilient at the end of the project. We suggest that one of the boundary shakers’ practices of boundary consolidation through discourses of authoritative knowledge and ‘groupmaking’ facilitated the construction of symbolic boundaries between the merging parties, thus contributing to the resilience of pre-merger practices.

Despite the importance of these challenges for practitioners, there is a limited number of studies in this field. Applying the organizational ambidexterity (AO) lens to analyze IT managers’ practices of ITI in public sector, with a specific emphasis on sourcing practices, the present study seeks to fill this gap. We present the outcomes of a Delphi study that involved 40 ITI experts from three sectors: public, private, and academic. Public sector practices of exploration-for-exploitation sourcing are discussed in this paper.

To cope with the effects of technological evolution, IT managers must have an articulated vision of their ITI as well as the ability to acquire, deploy, combine and reconfigure their ITI, i.e. dynamic IT capabilities. However, the underlying organizational actions of dynamic IT capabilities are difficult to identify and to circumscribe. Drawing on a Delphi study involving 29 IT management experts, this study has identified key organizational actions deployed to overcome the challenges related to the constant and rapid technological evolution to be agile. Overall, the experts emphasized the importance of collaboration, open culture, competencies, roadmap, standardization and monitoring of ITI to overcome the challenges and exploit the opportunities rel...

PSOs are social and economic actors who must spend taxpayers' money in a responsible and efficient manner. Despite the importance of these challenges for practitioners and academics alike, there is a limited number of studies in this field. The present study seeks to fill this gap through a systematic review of the literature followed by a Delphi study. Outcomes of this literature review are presented along with preliminary results of a Delphi study realized with 40 IT infrastructure experts.

Indeed, students who participated in the SBT sessions adopted different strategies for coordinating their work and sharing information. Observations of working patterns, which occurred during the SBT sessions, were analyzed and put into perspective using the literature on collaborative work. The preliminary findings presented here show that using LEGO® bricks allows immediate participants’ immersion in the challenges facing workers in a virtually connected world and facilitates the appropriation of theoretical concepts since the bricks serve as a metaphor to represent "real-life" situation.
