In 2008, 86 original participants in the Trois-RiviA¨res study (44 women and 42 men aged 44.0 ± 1.2 years) underwent a semistructured interview in which their attitudes toward PE, the amount of curricular time that should be allocated to PE, and participants' recollections of their primary school PE program were examined. From 1970 to 1977, these individuals had been assigned to either an experimental program (5 hr of PE per week from Grade 1 to 6) or the standard curriculum (40 min of PE per week). Participants advocated increasing the time currently allocated to school PE, to an average of 3 hr 25 min/week (± 1 hr 9 min). Justifications for such an increase included the lack of other opportunities for physical activity (PA), enhanced academic achievement in active individuals, and the potential contribution of...

Outside of the body, impact attenuation is achieved through the use of footwear with soles made of energy absorbant materials, as well as through the deformation of the running surface.

Climate and weather were shown to influence adults’ daily travel behaviours, but their influence on children’s AST and PA has been less examined. This study examined the influence of weather conditions on children’s AST and overall PA. Children in grades 4 to 6 (N = 1699; age, 10.2 ± 1.0 years) were recruited in schools located in urban, suburban and rural areas, stratified by area-level socioeconomic status, in 3 different regions of Canada (Trois-Rivières, Québec; Ottawa, Ontario; Vancouver, British Columbia). Mode of school travel was self-reported and physical activity was measured using a pedometer. We used publicly available data on total precipitation and early morning temperature. AST increased with temperature only among girls. Daily precipitation was negatively associated with boys’ and girls’ PA while warmer temperature was associated with increased PA on weekend days. ...

Research paper thumbnail of Tackling Childhood Overweight: Parental Perceptions of Stakeholders’ Roles in a Community-Based Intervention

Global Pediatric Health

Introduction. Collaborative efforts among communities, schools, parents, and health professionals... more Introduction. Collaborative efforts among communities, schools, parents, and health professionals are needed to prevent childhood obesity, which touches one third of Canadian youth. The purpose of this case study was to obtain parents’ experience and perceptions about stakeholder roles in a multidisciplinary community-based intervention aiming to tackle childhood overweight. Methods. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 10 parents following their participation in a community-based program designed to help families with overweight children adopt a healthier lifestyle. Results and Discussion. All parents preferred a multidisciplinary health team to monitor their children’s health. They expect that a physician or a pediatrician could diagnose overweight, explain results to parents, and refer families to resources. The team could also include professionals from health and education such as nutritionists/dietitians, nurses, physical education teachers, psychologists, k...

Research paper thumbnail of Comparison of the effects of EPA and DHA alone or in combination in a murine model of myocardial infarction

Adult, male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed for 14 days with different omega-3 diets. The animals were subjected to ischemia for 40min followed by reperfusion. Infarct size, Akt (protein kinase B) activation level, caspase-3 activity and mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening were measured. The results indicate that EPA or DHA alone significantly reduced infarct size compared to the other diets. Akt activity was increased in the group fed EPA or DHA alone, whereas no significant activation was observed in the other groups compared to no omega-3 PUFA. DHA alone reduced caspase-3 activity and conferred resistance to mPTP opening. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that EPA and DHA are individually effective in diminishing infarct size in our experimental model while their combination is not.

To influence this behaviour positively, it is suggested clinicians adapt the recommendations to each patient. Besides estimating needs and the values and the preferences of the person, professionals need to measure the physical activity. This measure also allows clinicians to follow the evolution of the behaviour further to the interventions. Subjective methods (questionnaire, logbook) and objective methods (pedometer, accelerometer, and heart rate monitor) can be used. There are advantages and inconveniences to each of these methods. This clinical column provides a review of these various methods to choose the one that is the most suited to the clinical context.

Data are based on the discourse of school staff members, parents and other members of the community of an elementary school. The impacts on students are illustrated in terms of prioritized values, academic and skill learning, behavior, self-esteem, sense of belonging and child-adult relationship. Impacts are also reported regarding school staff members, parents and other members of the community. Adequacy is shown between the development and deployment of cross-curricular competencies in the Arts du Cirque Program and what is prescribed by the Quebec School Program. Results show evidence of a rapprochement between parents and teachers and of the support of the community at large mainly as an audience. Work must go in order to develop stronger family-school-community relationships.

Exactly 125 parents of elementary level students, all members of the Provincial Parents Committee completed the questionnaire and answered a semi-opened question. Results revealed that the more the parents know about the teachers' assessment methods, the more they understand them. The more they are satisfied with the methods and agree with the results, the more they perceive the school report cards as being clear, understandable and useful in monitoring their child's progress. Such findings suggest that parents and teachers need to do more work together in developing workshops on assessments of disciplinary and cross-curricular competencies and on the understanding of report cards and assessment results that are being reported.
