"Il tardo pomeriggio di quel giorno di fine primavera del 411 a.C. in cui la commedia venne recit... more "Il tardo pomeriggio di quel giorno di fine primavera del 411 a.C. in cui la commedia venne recitata per la prima volta, secondo uno storico di cui ho perso ogni identità e traccia, il rumore delle esclamazioni e delle risa degli spettatori provocò un moto del cielo del tramonto attico che richiamò molte nuvole anche dall'Olimpo, con lo scatenamento simultaneo di un temporale pieno di pioggia." Così scrive Paolo Volponi nella premessa a questa sua traduzione, finora inedita, della "Lisistrata" di Aristofane, rilanciando un grande classico e svelando il suo rapporto con il mondo della classicità greca. La potenza visionaria e il progetto rivoluzionario di Lisistrata fanno di questa figura antica un'antenata di certi personaggi volponiani. La resa del testo greco vale come atto consanguineo all'opera originale di questo maestro del secondo Novecento, come momento civile e poetico a cavallo tra le civiltà.

The chapter examines Giovanna Bemporad’s unpublished translation of Virgil's Eclogues. By compari... more The chapter examines Giovanna Bemporad’s unpublished translation of Virgil's Eclogues. By comparing Bemporad’s translation (1939) and Giuseppe Albini’s translation of Le Bucoliche (1926), it discusses Bemporad’s translation methodology. Far from being a juvenile attempt, Bemporad’s translation, which she worked on at the age of sixteen, represents a first poetic dialogue with Virgil, a source of poetic inspiration and an aesthetic and existential mentor for her own work as poet and translator.

Organised in collaboration with the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Women's Writing (CCWW) and partially funded by the British Academy, this two-day conference aims at exploring the transnational reception of 20th- and 21st- century literary texts by women (where "woman" is understood beyond cis-normative categories). How are processes of literary reception and consecration gendered and transnationalised? How do transnational networks support the circulation of texts by women? What are the processes that intervene in the recognition or misrecognition of their artistic value, in their own country and abroad? Gender still plays a crucial role in the ways in which a work of art circulates and is received, as the construction and recognition of artistic value is deeply influenced by social structures and the hierarchies that permeates them. On the other hand, the transnational dimension of feminist struggles and thought fosters the circulation of works by women beyond their country of origin, so that they often meet popular success in other countries-the cases of Nicaraguan Gioconda Belli, Nigerian Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Italian Elena Ferrante, for example, are paradigmatic in this sense. Furthermore, since the second half of the 19th century, feminist networks of translators, publishers and intellectuals have worked tirelessly to promote and enable the circulation of works by women. This conference aims at investigating the gendered promotion and reception of works by women on a transnational level.
