Within self-regulated professions like law, the professional regulatory body controls much of the labour process and defines the body of professional knowledge. Apprenticeships, such as clinical locums in medicine and articles in law, play an important role in the transfer of labour process norms. However, more and more professionals seek employment in large organizations where the autonomy historically enjoyed by the self-employed worker and crafted in the confines of mentorships is increasingly subject to bureaucratic and administrative controls. In large employment settings rules and policies may interfere with workers’ exercise of professional discretion and full utilization of their knowledge. The result of the erosion of traditional labour process power under bureaucratic forms of organization leads professionals to seek alternate for...

Research paper thumbnail of Do sources of occupational community impact corporate internal control? The case of CFOs in the high-tech industry

Grouped as a member of top management teams (TMS) in studies, factors influencing decision making in this group rely on static measures of characteristics without regard for dynamic and longitudinal influences of career trajectories and industry occupational group memberships. The relationship between the high-tech industry as a site of notable reported internal control (IC) weakness and influences on CFOs requires closer examination. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The study draws together the upper echelons theory and occupational communities (OCs) to explore the impact of shared values and behavioral norms from different sources on executive decision making. Internal and external sources of OC are proposed and their influence on activities with respect to corp...

This study assesses a three-component model of professional commitment in a unionized environment to determine the applicability of a three-component model of professional commitment and its effect on participation in union and professional activities. This paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – A cross-sectional survey of licensed practical nurses tests the validity of a three-component model of professional commitment concurrent with union commitment; the impact of commitment on varying levels of participation in union and professional activities is examined. Findings – Support is found for a three component of professional commitment based on Meyer and Allen's model of organizational commitment. Normative professional commitment has an inverse relationship to o...

Research paper thumbnail of The Impact of Occupational Community on the Quality of Internal Control

Journal of Business Ethics, 2015

Despite a rise in measures to protect against such lapses, executives still make decisions whether or not to comply with reporting standards, best practices, industry norms and legislation. The prior literature in this area addresses individual characteristics of decision makers and social networks between executives and boards of directors, but to this point has largely overlooked group dynamics of the executive team. Our study addresses this gap and examines the relationship between an occupational community of top executives and the quality of internal control. We construct a unique measure for the executive occupational community based on CEO and CFO’s joint tenure. Our findings show that the number of years of CEO/CFO’s joint tenure is significantly and negatively associated with internal control weakness, suggesting that the longer the executive relationship, the lower the likelihood of internal control weakness. Our study indicates that the presence of an occupational community contributes to better internal control.

In both countries however, diversity Management has been recently imported under the influence of Anglo-Saxon practices. This paper investigates how diversity management is put in place in two utility companies, one in each country. After studying which HRM practices it includes and the factors that influence them, we will discuss the relationships between equal employment and diversity management in both countries. The first part of this paper will explore the national contexts and their influences on diversity management, applied to gender, age and ethnicity. We will then compare the development of diversity policies in two companies in France and Sweden. EAU DE PARIS has been considered one of the most diversity oriented company in France. The Swedish group VATTENFAL is a leading actor in the energy sector of the Nordic countries, whose diversity policy is part of a global sustainable development programme. National contingencies account for differences in policies' arrays and paces. However, Diversity management converges in both companies towards Equal employment human resource practices oriented by strategic business goals. We also discuss the relevance of the Anglo-Saxon debate between Diversity and Equal employment in the two countries.

Professions embrace a spirit of individualism and mystique, privileged by a social status, while unions are collectivist and seek respect and to usurp power from a dominant class. How do professionals successfully shift their position from dominance to subordination when they engage in collective bargaining? This article proposes that collective representation of professions is not a substitution of one form of power for another, but rather is the expression of a new arena of power for labour playing itself out at the forefront of work regulation in Canada. Three cases of labour disputes of professionalized workers highlight the struggle over the exercise of discretion and illustrate that collective bargaining is an occupational closure strategy that alters the boundaries of a profession in an attempt to maintain professional control.

Research paper thumbnail of Peering Inside the “Black Box”: The Impact of Management-Side Representatives on the Industrial Relations Climate of Organizations

Managing this climate is often left to union stewards and management-side labor relations representatives. While there is a large literature on the role of union stewards, little is written about the role that management-side labor relations representatives play in establishing or maintaining positive labor-management relations. Building from a series of interviews with labor relations representatives in Canada and a nationwide pilot study of frontline industrial relations workers, we model the role of the labor relations representatives and their specific job actions in the established model of labor climate. Considering personal, structural, and attitudinal antecedents and measures of individual effectiveness, the study reveals that flexibility and informality matter more than formal education in industrial relations for creating positive labor climate. The study results indicate that labo...

The key findings of the analysis are the likely unanticipated requirement of graduate students to completely immerse themselves in the learning environment for four to six years mastering the theoretical foundations and research methodologies of their chosen fields. Students also spend substantial, and no less important, time learning how to be academics. This paper explains how these two processes are intertwined and how, through socialization, students can understand and succeed in their roles.
