This article analyzes the complex dynamics surrounding the early beginnings of the rise of Protes... more This article analyzes the complex dynamics surrounding the early beginnings of the rise of Protestantism in the Zapotec Central Valley of Oaxaca. It also examines the interaction between transnational organization such as the National Baptist Convention, ethnic identity, gender and historical memory. The rise of Protestantism has created its own system of martyrs, memories and creation stories that unite Protestants across political and ethnic borders. Religious conversion has redefined what it means to be Mexican, to be Indigenous and to be Christian. Specifically, this work investigates religious and agrarian violence in Tlacochahuaya during the 1920s and 1930s and its legacy in that town today.

Paolo Vignolo, a Colombian architect, participates in a project centered on “the city of the dead,” Bogotá’s Central Cemetery. Vignolo and his colleagues at the National University of Colombia and elsewhere encourage the voices and memories of multiple social groups that identify with and are inspired by the immense disorder of the Central Cemetery, where esteemed historical figures are entombed next to guerrilla commanders and ex-prostitutes. El crecimiento del protestantismo ha creado su propio sistema de mártires, memorias e historias de creación que unen a protestantes a través de las fronteras políticas y étnicas. El cambio religioso ha redefinido qué significa ser mexicano, ser indígena, y ser cristiano en comunidades rurales. It also examines the interaction between transnational organization such as the National Baptist Convention, ethnic identity, gender and historical memory.
