So I know this LJ hasn't been updated in over two years, but I'm hoping some informative people are still lurking.
I'm interested in learning more about Ursinus and would love some up to date information.
I'll leave a list of questions to make it easier.
How's the history department? I really want to be challenged, maybe do some research, and take a myriad of classes. I'm thinking of grad school so...
What do you think of the Common Intellectual Experience? It sounds like a really great part of Ursinus.
Is studying abroad prevalent? It's an important goal of mine.
How's the social scene? I honestly don't plan on drinking or really being a hard core partier, so I want to know if there is honestly other things to do and other students who feel the same way.
If you do go to Ursinus, what made you decide to go?
Thanks.

slowfkafternoon @ 05:30 pm: Music at Ursinus?
Unfortunately my college decision is coming down to which is more important to me: a great gym* (Ursinus) or great musical opportunities (other school). I see Ursinus has a concert band and a jazz band, however, I play violin and guitar, neither of which are traditionally in a concert or jazz band (unless you count jazz guitar, which i'm not really into anyway). I currently play the oboe part on violin for a concert band; do you think I would be allowed to do this at Ursinus, even just for fun? Is there any group playing involved in either the Ursinus Folk Society or Ursinis Music Society? If there are no ensemble opportunities, would I still be able to study violin and guitar through the "applied music lessons" offered?
Thanks!
Sierra
* I want to dance and swim. At the other school, there is no dance team, and you have to use a nearby college's pool.

_devillicious_ @ 02:11 pm: Dear underclassmen that aren't science majors
As a senior who's been applying to grad school and jobs, here are some things I learned:
Jobs: 1. Your education is going to help you 1/3 of the way, regardless of where you graduate. The rest is all based on what you did your 4 years in college NOT related to academics [unless its research] In other words, intern your friggin butt off every chance you get in either a wide variety of fields or one specific field you know you want to pursue. AND get involved with student organizations. All the jobs I"ve been applying to wanted the skills I developed through being involved in organizations on campus, not so much what I learned in the classroom. Ursinus prepares you well intellectually, but you have to gain the experience yourself.
2. Career Services= Lifesaver. Perfect Interview software= AMAZING. 9 out of 10 questions I was asked at an interview was from the software, and by then I was so used the questions cuz of practice I knew exactly what I wanted to say.
3. Job search: Most legit jobs don't have "entry-level" in the job heading. I haven't applied to any jobs like "***ENTRY-LEVEL MARKETING $55K+ WORK FOR PRO SPORTS*** " that so I don't know what happens when you do, but something about them doesn't seem right to me. Most jobs open to fresh college grads are sales/bank teller/customerservice jobs. Most other jobs want a minimin of 1~3 years of real work experience, which most of us don't have. What you can do is look for assistant jobs; those are usually entry level jobs, and depending on the job description [how much work you actually do] you can still apply to some jobs even if they want prior work experience. AND depending on your field, don't expect a huge salary out of college.
4. Connections are good. ask your parents/ relatives if they know anyone to get your foot in the door for jobs. It makes life a lot easier.
5. There are Jobs on Craiglist, so don't forget to search there too.
6. Someone once said something like when you apply to 100 jobs, you get 10 phone calls back for interviews, and hopefully you'll be able to land at least 1 job from there. I think that's pretty close. If you don't hear from a job within 2 weeks, you should move on and apply to more.
Grad school 1. Get to know at least 3 of your profs really well during your college career; grad schools need about 2~3 recs, and its always good to have back up recommendators in case something doesn't work out.
2. Again, extra curricular activities/internship experience work wonders for your application essay and resume.
3. Apply to alot of schools so you not only get into a good percentage of them, you also have alot to choose from. Also, if you're kind of undecided about the whole grad school thing, you should apply to numerous programs so you can pick and choose after you get in.
4. Liberal Arts majors/ Communications and the like get very limited merit financial aid for grad schools, so keep that in mind.
Hope this helped somebody. Alumns/ other seniors, any other suggestions?

flightsofwhimsy @ 10:49 pm: Just a Question or Two...
Just a prospective with a few questions here:
What is the social scene like at Ursinus? Are there a lot of activities set up on weekends, etc?
Is it possible to get to Philadelphia without a car? Is it easy?
And lastly, I've been reading things about race-based incidents on campus and whatnot. Is that a serious problem for Ursinus or would you consider it out of character?
Thanks so much for all your help.

kay_is_krazy @ 11:56 pm: Clubs at Ursinus
If I remember correctly from the website, Ursinus has a Best Buddies program and a Gay-Straight Alliance type thing, which are the two things I'm most involved in at my high school. What I'm wondering is:
Are there a lot of special needs buddies involved in Best Buddies? Is the program pretty active?
How active is the GSA? Is there a lot of tolerance at Ursinus for those issues?
Thanks!

I am making this post to encourage everyone to come see The Laramie Project next week. The play will blow your mind and possibly change your life in the process. It opens a week from tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 and will run through Saturday and is in the Lenfest theatre in the Kalidescope. Come. Bring your friends. It will be amazing.

alegria_dreams @ 03:18 pm: Hey ^_^
Hey guys,
I'm a prospective student for the class of 2011. Since the first semester is now officially over (yippee xD) I'm trying to figure out if Ursinus wants a copy of my midyear report. Can anyone answer this question for me? I've looked on the website and haven't been able to find any information.
Thanks so much.

_totschlagen @ 11:26 am: White Privilege
Here is my final photography project from last semester. After much
agonizing, I ended up looking at the topic of white privilege, mainly
at Ursinus College, but it can really apply to any college or institution in the nation.
I'm not going to go into everything that I learned and how I'm a better person because of this project.
I'm just going to post it and let people think what they want.
By the by, the quality of these images is pretty terrible because there's some kind of scummy buildup on the underside of the glass on my scanner.

Comments are appreciated.

fruhlings @ 08:47 pm: hey, I got accepted to Ursinus a month or so ago (yay Early Action!), and I was just wondering what the activist community on campus is like. Is there a sense of social justice on the campus? What's the political atmosphere at Ursinus? I'm big on women's issues and anti-racist efforts, so I just want to know how much of that stuff goes on. :]
