La constante innovación tecnológica y al abaratamiento de los dispositivos, han hecho que el foto... more La constante innovación tecnológica y al abaratamiento de los dispositivos, han hecho que el fototrampeo se convierta en una técnica ampliamente utilizada para la realización de inventarios biológicos, generando gran cantidad de registros de alto interés ecológico. El principal objetivo de esta comunicación es presentar una herramienta de software libre (FOSS), desarrollada para facilitar el manejo de datos, obtenidos mediante fototrampeo, en un espacio protegido de la Comunidad Valenciana. Así, a partir de un estudio iniciado en 2009, se ha analizado la composición de la comunidad de vertebrados en el Parque Natural de la Sierra de Mariola. Para la realización de los muestreos se han empleado cámaras de infrarrojos con sensor de movimiento (Moultrie Game Spy I-60®), obteniendo un total de 29,941 contactos que han servido para determinar la presencia/ausencia de las especies muestreadas en las 63 cuadrículas (2*2 Km) establecidas en la zona de estudio. El principal objetivo de esta investigación es conocer la distribución de la garduña (Martes foin... more El principal objetivo de esta investigación es conocer la distribución de la garduña (Martes foina) dentro del PN Sierra de Mariola. Un mejor conocimiento de su distribución será de interés para la definición de medidas de gestión de fauna del Parque. En 2009, utilizando técnicas de fototrampeo se recopilaron 29.941 imágenes con algún contacto animal. De estas imágenes, el 0,42% del las foto- grafías registradas son de garduña y se ha detectado su presencia en 20 de las 63 cuadrículas del PN Sierra de Mariola (31,75%). Este estudio ha permitido integrar la información recopilada en campo con las bases de datos existentes para concluir que la situación de la garduña en Sierra de Mariola no es preocupante.

ABSTRACT The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers that a decrease in t... more ABSTRACT The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers that a decrease in the area of occupancy (AOO) is a critical criterion for listing a species as rare, endemic or threatened. However, methods for the accurate measurement of changes in the area of occupancy are relatively limited, and existing methods are influenced by spatial scale and sampling methods. To overcome such cartographic problems, different cartographic methods were proposed in this study and implemented in a free and open source GIS library. A single species (Helianthemum caput-felis Boiss.), which is distributed in many countries of the western Mediterranean, was used as a case study. This plant is threatened and protected because its preferred habitat is near the sea where urban growth is high in the Mediterranean regions. Intensive field work was initially conducted to create a geodatabase with more than 13,000 GPS points. Cartographic methods were then applied to the geodatabase to obtain AOO measurements at different scales to support sustainable urban planning. Based on positive experiences with the use of the programming library, it is believed that these open source tools can be customised and extended to other similar biogeographic studies that require data analysis at different scales.

ABSTRACT This paper studies the driving factors in the process of farmland abandonment. The text ... more ABSTRACT This paper studies the driving factors in the process of farmland abandonment. The text is organised in three sections: (i) the concept of abandonment is reviewed by identifying the most important drivers in the scientific literature; (ii) a case study in a Spanish Mediterranean area is presented; and (iii) a new approach is proposed that combines geographical information systems (GIS) and knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) to define the most important variables for studying the abandonment process in this area. The variables considered in this study can be grouped into environmental, socio-economic, and those related to farming practices. Bearing in mind the potentially large number of variables, a few questions had to be answered at the outset: (1) which of the variables are really driving factors in the abandonment process of farming plots?; (2) how important is each of these variables by itself and in combination with others?; and (3) is it possible to consider all variables in the same analysis? We demonstrate the capability of data mining techniques to select the most important features for creating useful scenarios. Finally, two experiments demonstrate that the applied KDD method can be useful for selecting the best variable combinations in studies on farmland abandonment.
