Of the data obtained in this new archeological activity, the pieces of information that most stand out are those that allow us to deepen our understanding of the formal configuration of the building, in its own location, at a difficult and complicated topographic point, although deliberate, in order to provide visibility, protagonism and
monumentality, and in its relationship with the urban framework in which it is embedded, to throw into relief its role as an articulator from which the rest of the urban fabric develops.

ABSTRACT: An update on the knowledge of Roman mosaics of Cártama is presented, in addition to the already known ones which represent The Labours of Hercules and The Birth of Venus, other two of which there is some information about their findings. The study shows firstly a brief context about the Roman city of Cartima, setting the urban functional areas that can be interpreted from the available knowledge, where the mosaics provide essential information. Then, each mosaic is analysed, describing the details of its findings, description and parallels, func-tionality and chronology.

Abstract: The archaeological excavation recently carried out in Écija (Sevilla), in a site between Fernández and Elvira streets, brought out some roman remains, among them two outstanding mosaics. Both of them are interesting and original pavements which came to complete the rich musive heritage of the roman city. In the present work we analyze and study them in detail.

The cube and the prism are frequent components of geometrical compositions featured in Roman mosa... more The cube and the prism are frequent components of geometrical compositions featured in Roman mosaics. They can be found as free elements belonging to the secondary decoration of many pavements, or as part of friezes or mosaic panels, sometimes mixed with other geometrical figures to shape various compositions and sometimes used as exclusive motifs and single theme, forming unitary and/or modular panels. This paper will focus on the latter. In our catalogue of Geometrical Designs, these modular compositions with three-dimensional cubes or "tumbl-ing blocks" and with elongated cubes or prisms define models E3 and E3A respectively. Even though these are present in a significant number of pavements in the Roman Baetica, we cannot assume their widespread use since they are so far absent from sit es with a well-established mosaic tradition, such as Italica, Hispalis or Carmo. In contrast, Astigi and Corduba are the cities where more pavements with these designs have been found. In this paper we will also analyse the process of development of both models, and how these compositions, dominant and solid by their own characteristics despite the sense of movement they transmit, can produce diverse effects and create different optical perceptions by simply changing the point of view from which they are observed or with a slight colour change. This last aspect is essential to allow the design its main feature, which relates to a three-dimensional effect.

Additionally, we offer a general view of the investigative course of action , the method, and the technique among other things, and an overview of the obtained results up to this point. The sheer quantity of floor mosaics obtained from within the territorial borders of ancient roman Baetica and the complexity of this assignment due to the utilized methodology make it so that our research advances rather slowly. Even so, we currently have more than half of the mosaics of Baetica catalogued and analyzed. The study´s progress and a rather large portion of the catalogue of geometric designs have been recently published and are available at: Vargas Vázquez 2014, íd. 2016. Throughout this research we hope to demonstrate the importance of the mosaic in the roman province of Baetica as a highly prized and demanded element, in both urban and rural environments. We seek to highlight the geometry of the mosaic expressed in its various and interesting forms, designs and/or compositions that are both simple and complex, and in many cases fruit of a marketed and evident creativity, singularity, and originality.

The material under study corresponds to an assemblage of marble roof imbrices, the characteristics of which provide a new understanding of the building , of its aesthetics and its statics. This, in turn, has led us to reflect on the nature of this architectural complex and, particularly, on its foundations, considering the enormous weight of the roof that we now know covered the Traianeum of Italica.
