time. We discuss how these three methods of development are intrinsically connected, feeding into each other in such a way that they can be theorised as essentially different spatiotemporal perspectives on the same phenomenon. From there we pose three central questions for the modelling of change and contrast in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), summarised briefly as: How can the theoretical and descriptive
architecture of SFL be developed to account for the dynamics between these three genetic systems? How can we account for the expansion of the meaning potential of individual languages as a result of these processes? And to what extent are the fundamental categories of SFL adequate to the description of languages other than English and, hence, to the comparison of different languages? We then provide an overview of how the different papers in this special issue respond to these three
questions.

The first set of texts consists of two science popularization articles dealing with the same scientific finding (Bee Texts), whereas the second set consists of all the articles covering the opening day of a world summit held in Rome (Summit Texts) which were published in the online versions of El País and The Guardian respectively. Newsworthiness (Bell, 1991), attribution and lexicogrammatical strategies have been studied in order to show how ideological construction has been developed in these two different kinds of report, one dealing with a non-controversial event (as represented in the Bee Texts) and the other with a controversial event (as represented in the Summit Texts).

This paper discusses how different voices are constructed along the narration of scientific findi... more This paper discusses how different voices are constructed along the narration of scientific findings in the discourse of popularization articles from newspapers. Our main aim is to see if there is any relation between the construction and indexing (Clift 2006) of authorial stance, in this case defined as the writer’s expression of feelings and assessments concerning epistemic considerations, attitudes and style (Conrad and Biber 2000; Bednarek 2006) and the introduction of external sources of information. We rely on Chafe’s (1986) broad notion of evidentiality as the attitudes towards knowledge, considering that knowledge is “the basic information whose status is qualified in one way or another by markers of evidentiality” (Chafe 1986: 262). Readers’ expectations about how popularizations are constructed include the assumption that the journalists narrate scientific findings objectively, without expressing their personal position on the events narrated, and that they are fully relia...

Research paper thumbnail of Constructing stance by means of attribution: How is the 'evaluative space' filled in science popularizations in English?

This chapter presents a study on the relation between the introduction of authorial voices in sci... more This chapter presents a study on the relation between the introduction of authorial voices in science popularization articles and the construction of the journalists' stance. Science popularizations are polyphonic texts which, similarly to other media genres, are typically constructed by relying on other voices apart from the journalist's. When an external voice is being introduced in the text, there is a transition area between the voice which was speaking so far and the new voice. In this chapter it is claimed that this transition area functions as an evaluative space which can be potentially used by journalists to include their own stance towards the information presented. In order to support and illustrate this, we present an analysis of some of the elements in the evaluative spaces which are found when journalists introduce authorized sources by means of direct speech constructions in popularizations in the British press. Our results show that journalists of these texts construct their stance by two different means, either overtly through the use of reporting verbs and evaluative expressions, or covertly by blurring the boundaries between their voices and the voices from experts.

ABSTRACT This paper presents the first results of the research project tradotros: a Critical Encyclopaedia of Intercultural Communication Theory, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education (hum 2005-05066). the main objective of this project is the compilation of a multilingual database of terms and concepts in the interdisciplinary fields of intercultural communication and translation, from cognitive, sociological, anthropological, pragmalinguistic, semiotic, translatological and communicative perspectives, concurring all these fields in the common ground of intercultural communication.

As Pennock-Speck and del Saz-Rubio state in the introduction, this volume aims to provide readers with " food for thought " and to " spark new approaches to the analysis of television advertising " (14). In order to achieve this, eight contributions are presented in an attempt to account for " the exegesis and explanation of tv commercials from several diff erent cultures and from diff erent theoretical stances " (14). As the editors explain, the motivation for this volume comes from the fact that previous studies, especially those focusing on gen...

Research paper thumbnail of Systemic Functional Linguistics at the Crossroads: Intercultural and Contrastive Descriptions of Language

An important part of the meaning of any feature is its relative probability in relation to other mutually defining features and, therefore, language description is intimately related to the (un)expectedness of the behaviour, presence, absence, etc. of linguistic phenomena. However, globalization is dynamically pervading cultural and historical groups, identities and languages to an unprecedented extent and thus it is not surprising that cultural differences, hybridizing processes and diversity are challenging our knowledge and our expectations on the probability and extent of linguistic phenomena and their behaviour. Thus, by postioning linguistics at the crossroads, the conference invites participants to explore how cultural dynamics challenges linguistic description both in theory and practice from a variety of perspectives, including how paradigmatic choices are realized syntagmatically in different languages, how experience is construed in different settings, or how social roles and relations are enacted in culturally diverse situations, just to name a few. The conference also aims at addressing the question of how SFL is located at the crossroads between past and future in terms of the theoretical achievements and practical applications so far achieved and, therefore, it also invites proposals dealing with up-to-date theoretical constructs and practical applications from intra-and inter-disciplinary perspectives which show how SFL is at the cutting edge of linguistic description.

Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. 1. Introduction 1 Language has been widely considered a key element in the performing and display of identities and in the construction of our individuality. According to Joseph, "[i]dentities are manifested in language as, first, the categories and labels that people attach to themselves and others to signal their belonging; second, as the indexed ways of speaking and through which they perform their belonging; and third, as the interpretations that others make of those indices" (2016: 19). Norton defines 'identity' as "how a person understands his or her relationship to the world, how that relationship is structured across time and space, and how the person understands possibilities for the future" (2013: 45).

However, the use of different units of a suprasentential order makes it difficult to generalize the results obtained in such analyses, which supposes a dilemma in text research. This article is an attempt at delimiting the most relevant analytic units, focusing on the dichotomies 'text/discourse', 'register/genre', theoretical unit/practical unit' and 'level/range'. The background of terms is analyzed with a view to find a series of rules which would fill the void of a missing singles analytic criterion. We also consider the practical environment of discourse in the areas of language for specific purposes and translation, where this problem frequently surfaces

Combining different aims and perspectives, chapters cover key issues on intercultural and contrastive aspects of language, and are organised in four thematic areas dealing with the description of self, identity, polyphony and alignment in discourse, with applications of SFL to education, with the analysis of theme and with the description of patterns, functions, modes and choice in discourse. The selection of papers, authored by international experts in the field, constitutes a representative panoply of the contributions presented at the 27th European Systemic Functional Linguistics Conference, which took place at the University of Salamanca (Spain) from June 29th to July 1st, 2017.

These, as she contends, constitute «the premises of interculturality as a basic resource of social development of all ethnic communities involved» (ibid.). In her view,

Research paper thumbnail of SFL approaches to language dynamics and contrast

Lingua, 2021

We discuss how these three methods of development are intrinsically connected, feeding into each other in such a way that they can be theorised as essentially different spatiotemporal perspectives on the same phenomenon. From there we pose three central questions for the modelling of change and contrast in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), summarised briefly as: How can the theoretical and descriptive architecture of SFL be developed to account for the dynamics between these three genetic systems? How can we account for the expansion of the meaning potential of individual languages as a result of these processes? And to what extent are the fundamental categories of SFL adequate to the description of languages other than English and, hence, to the comparison of different languages? We then provide an overview of how the different papers in this special issue respond to these three questions.
