The 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid was by far the more effective antiphlogistic agent. The molecular mechanisms that may have contributed to the observed difference in antiphlogistic activity are discussed.

They all had penetrating wounds of the globe and developed bilateral uveitis, as well as two or more extraocular manifestations, e.g., vitiligo, poliosis, dysacousia and/or meningitis. Histopathologically, the enucleated globes revealed features that were identical to those observed in Harada's disease: mainly, a granulomatous choroiditis with formations of chorioretinal adhesions and migration of pigment into the disorganized retina. The study indicated that the only reliable feature that could differentiate SO from VHK disease was the history of a penetrating wound in the former and the absence of such trauma in the latter.

Sensitization to lens protein elicited a good antibody response in rabbits, however no disease developed after lens injury. This is another example of frequent discrepancies between autoimmune responses and autoimmune disease and indicates the importance of investigating mechanisms of phlogogenicity in autoimmune disease.

Research paper thumbnail of Metastatic adenocarcinoma with rupture through the bruch membrane simulating a choroidal melanoma

American Journal of Ophthalmology, Dec 1, 2001

Interventional case report. Evaluation in a university-based clinic, including a complete eye examination, fluorescein angiography, and ultrasonography; oncological evaluation; and eventual enucleation with histopathological study, including immunohistochemical stains. A 62-year-old Hispanic female presented with visual loss, right eye, of short duration because of a choroidal mass with retinal detachment. Ultrasonography showed a dome-shaped lesion with an eccentric collar-button projection and medium internal reflectivity, which suggested a choroidal melanoma. Initial systemic evaluation was negative. Severe pain necessitated enucleation, RE, and histopathology of the choroidal mass demonstrated an adenocarcinoma. Further examination revealed a left, upper lobe, nonsmall cell lung carcinoma. Metastatic choroidal tumors may present, although rarely, with collar-button configurations.

Research paper thumbnail of Treatment of Experimental Granulomatous Uveitis by Lipoxygenase and Cyclo-oxygenase Inhibitors

To determine the role of the lipoxygenase and cyclo-oxygenase products of arachidonic acid in the modulation of granulomatous uveitis, one group of experimental animals was treated with nafazatrom, while another group was treated with nordihydroguaiaretic acid (lipoxygenase inhibitors). Both resulted in significant attenuation of granulomatous inflammation, with reduced giant-cell infiltration into the choroid. In contrast, indomethacin (a cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor) therapy resulted in increased giant-cell formation. These findings suggest that the lipoxygenase and cyclo-oxygenase products of arachidonic acid play a role in the development of granulomatous uveitis and that such inflammation can be selectively suppressed by lipoxygenase inhibitors.

At low dose levels, a non-necrotizing posterior segment inflammation is observed. At high dose levels an acute necrotizing panophthalmitis is observed. Complement depletion markedly modulates the inflammation observed following sensitization with high dose levels but appears to have no effect on
