Artifacts and site patterning give some clues about the lives of those who lived under the (usually coercive) conditions of turpentine labor camps.

Mechanical excavation techniques were applied to strip away areas of urban overburden, exposing e... more Mechanical excavation techniques were applied to strip away areas of urban overburden, exposing early to mid 1800s refuse features from the occupation of Fort Brooke. The deposits -- preserved under the floors of 20th century houses built on piers -- are important because they show that remains of the fort may be present even on the extreme northeast of the cantonment (previously thought unlikely).

The site contained peculiar deposits of ochre that seem to have been intentionally deposited at the base of a midden layer during the Middle/Late Archaic. Northwest Florida, upper Apalachicola River Valley.
