Within an intertemporal optimization framework a direct relationship is observed between the length of consumers' planning horizons and the level of economic development. In particular, consumption behavior in a sample of developed economies reflect longer planning horizons than in the sample of less developed economics. The average planning horizon for a group of less developed economies is about 7 months, while it is 1.6 and 3.8 years for middle and high income economies, respectively. [E21, O50]

Research paper thumbnail of Identifying Latent Outcome Measures in Inpatient Physical Therapy

Like all health care practitioners, physical and occupational therapists provide services to thei... more Like all health care practitioners, physical and occupational therapists provide services to their patients that are intended to increase patient health and well-being. But because patient health and well-being are inherently latent, therapists are often forced to utilize indirect methods for measuring the effectiveness of their practices. These indirect methods usually involve gathering data on multiple indicators of therapy effectiveness. The problem with this approach is that there are usually multiple indicators for each latent phenomenon, and each of those indicators may give contradictory findings. As a result, the exact relationship between each indicator and the underlying phenomenon is often unclear. In this paper, we apply factor analysis to data on inpatient physical therapy following total knee replacement surgery (TKR) at a Midwestern rehabilitation institute. Our goal is to not only determine how many different latent measures of patient well-being are inherent in this type of therapy, but also to identify which (and how much) each of the empirical indicators commonly used to measure patient progress contribute to each of these underlying factors. The results of our analysis indicate that there are two underlying rehabilitation factors. One of these underlying measures is explained primarily by the flexion measures taken by the staff, while the other latent factor is explained by the remaining empirical indicators. Thus, it appears that patient progress in post-TKR therapy is really a twofold phenomenon. As such, process improvement initiatives intended to quantify and increase the quality of care provided to patients must be adapted to take this finding into account.

In particular, organizations such as the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of American Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) have placed increased emphasis on the use of dataoriented methods of monitoring and improving an organization's performance. For many providers, particularly small and mid-sized providers, this presents two problems. First, small and mid-sized providers often have difficulty collecting the data necessary to document their process improvement activities. Secondly, even if these facilities are able to collect the appropriate data, a provider's staff often does not have the knowledge to appropriately apply the statistical techniques inherent in process improvement. The purpose of this paper is to present a case study that demonstrates how firms with limited resources and available data can employ some simple statistical techniques to measure performance and process improvement.

This paper uses techniques drawn from information theory econometrics, and more specifically the theory of information entropy, to characterize the predictive content of business sentiment surveys. The authors apply these techniques to publicly available information obtained from various editions of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Empire State Manufacturing Survey, one of the most popular business sentiment surveys conducted in the USA. Parametric and non-parametric statistical analyses are used to examine differences in the quantity of predictive content across various questions in the survey. The results suggest that business sentiment surveys contain a reasonably high degree of informative content. However, the amount of informative content varies considerably from question to question in the survey. Questions that are more general in nature and ask about current perceptions (as opposed to future expectations) contain more informative content. Business sentiment surveys are a practical, low-cost method to assess the current and expected future state of local and regional economies. However, the value of these surveys is questionable if they do not contain much information. This research finds that such surveys do contain a large amount of information, and are worth administering. However, specific types of survey items convey more information that others, which also suggests that business sentiments surveys can be further revised to maximize the amount of content gained from respondents.

In particular, the pattern of alliance formation exhibits considerable geographic concentration. This paper estimates the relative influence of several factors identified in the related literature as important considerations in the formation of alliances. Specifically, the investigation focuses on alliances formed across different stages of the value chain and across different types of industries between U.S. and Japanese multinationals. Using a logistic regression model the paper examines the role of firm-specific, industry-specific, and country-specific factors in the choice of U.S. multinationals to form cooperative arrangements involving single and multiple type of activities in the value chain with Japanese multinationals. Preliminary findings indicate that firm size and country risk were significant influences on the nature of alliance formation. In particular, the size of a firm, the firm's return on sales and the level of country risk act to reduce the odds (probability) that an alliance will be of a singletype form. These findings raise a number of questions about the usefulness of existing measures to adequately account for alliance formation.

Between Fall 1970 and Fall 2000, enrollment in all degree-granting institutions rose from 8.5 million to about 15.1 million students. Simultaneously, there has been a proliferation of developmental skills programs in higher education institutions largely in response to an increasing proportion of under-prepared college students. This paper compares the impact of alternative remedial reading courses on students' academic performance in college. The findings indicate that while a reading development course generated relatively better outcomes for under-prepared students than a paired economics-reading development course, there was no statistical difference in long-term academic success between the top performers (A and B students) in both courses.

The result of cointegration analysis indicate no long-run relationships between actual and PPP exchange rates. The vector autoregressive framework is used to show that both real and monetary shocks influence deviations from the PPP exchange rates. However; except for the New Zealand dollar neither real nor monetary shocks can adequately explain the deviations from PPP for three other currencies. A major implication for multinational business is that exchange rate exposure will require innovative internal accounting and organizational practices to deal with related budgeting problems.

This paper extends previous analyses ofthe shape ofexchange rate distributions by considering a wider range ofcandidate processes. The results indicate that the logistic distribution provides the best representation ofcurrency returnsforfour major currencies (the German mark, Japanese yen, Canadian dollar and British pound) against the U. S. dollar between January 1973 and July 1995. These results are significant because they show that in spite ofthe apparent increase in exchange rate variability during the 1980s and J990s there has been a stable underlying distribution for major currencies.

The 1973:Q4 - 1987:Q4 sub-period was used to estimate the models for the Canadian Dollar, British Pound, German Mark and Japanese Yen and the parameter estimates were then used to generate out-of- ample forecasts for the 1988:Q4 - 1997:Q4 period. Based on the differences between actual and predicted results and whether predicted results were directionally accurate the findings indicate that an econometric model based on economic fundamentals tended to outpe1form market-based spot and forward rate models.
