Drawing initially on the work of Habermas, in which the colonization of the lifeworld occurs by system imperatives of rationalization, labour, money and power, the paper argues that such moves are manifested starkly in discourses of the relation between education and work, and five areas are introduced in which the links operate. The marketization and commodification of education, together with its incorporation into the service of capital and labour, are attested through a short worked example of one small territory within the larger context of China. Then, taking a le...

Research paper thumbnail of Leadership for self-organisation: complexity theory and communicative action

International Journal of Complexity in Leadership and Management, 2011

Complexity theory suggests that leaders must create the conditions for self-organised emergence a... more Complexity theory suggests that leaders must create the conditions for self-organised emergence and emergent order, both of which value bottom-up development and move an organisation away from excessive or inhibiting bureaucracy and hierarchy. Communication, as a central feature of complexity theory, can facilitate the creation of the conditions for self organised emergence and order. Communication in complexity-theory-based leadership to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and hierarchy and to foster openness to unpredictable futures is argued to be illocutionary rather than perlocutionary. The nature of such communication is found in Habermas's 'ideal speech situation' and his theory of communicative action. Self-organisation, emergence and emergent order have to be considered in terms of desirability, morality and ethics. The illocutionary force of Habermas's 'ideal speech situation' addresses these in relation to communication, reducing unnecessary bureaucracy and hierarchy in an organisation. The paper argues that leaders can embrace the tenets of Habermas's ideal speech situation and theory of communicative action in order to create the conditions for desired, morally and ethically defensible emergent, self-organised, feedback-informed order.

There is insufficient empirical evidence that they demonstrate fitness for purpose and achievement of purpose, and reasons for this are suggested. Problems in determining the links between cause and effect are introduced and suggestions are made for evaluating their achievement of purposes, how much impact NQFs have had (and on what and whom) and how effective and efficacious they are. The paper argues that a much stronger evidence base is required of their effectiveness, efficacy and impact, to identify those features which contribute to success (or otherwise), and to understand what is needed to ensure that they are fit for purpose. The paper suggests how this might be approached.
