The methodology was descriptive field survey, a questionnaire survey consisted of 20 students enrolled in the TIU to assess their satisfaction with current group study room, and a face to face interview with librarians to identify essential factors in preference study environment. Outcomes of this study provided suggestions in improving group study rooms at TIU library. The results showed that current size and number of group study rooms were not sufficient and students were using other spaces outside library for collaborative activities. The results also showed that although the group study rooms were crowded always, the students generally were not satisfied with current interior environment of group study rooms and they gave priority to number of rooms they liked most to see improved. Interview results showed that despite the reality that students' desire for collaborative activities is growing continually, current numbers of group study rooms are not sufficient, current old furniture and small size of rooms are not providing a preference study environment for students at TIU library.

The material is one of the tools used in the process of architectural design as specific part of design solution. In order to identify the architectural characteristics and variations in traditional mosques designs, field survey of the building materials of historical mosque was conducted. Local materials used in construction of mosques in six regions identified. According to role of building materials availability in different regions all over the world where Islam was spread, four types of mosques were concluded. Twelve mosques were selected as sample of the study. Each mosque was analysed in terms of its components and materials used for architectural elements. The findings of the study demonstrate the aspects of using traditional building materials in the architectural elements of the historic mosques

The expression optimal structure is extremely vague because of the structure may be optimal in different aspects. These aspects are known as objectives. Weight optimization of structures plays a major role due to its significant effect to overall costs. The research uses finite element method by the aid of STAAD software for analysis and sizing optimization design for six trusses types which are common used for span12m. Different cross sections shapes are used to verify the one that gives optimal truss weight. Many of previous existing researches employ the areas of cross sections as design variables without heightening to the shape of cross section at the beginning of the process: accordingly the result area may be not sufficient in case that the designer do not select the effective shape than others. Results of this paper show that the chosen cross section shape has a significant impact on the weight trusses optimization which is formulated selecting a set of design variables that represent the structural and architectural configuration of the system.

The research question is how to retain the integrity of historic mosques through using sustainable material? The main purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of materials on conservation of historic mosques in old Mosul city with sustaining the integrity of the mosques. The study applies qualitative method of analysis. The method of collecting data is by making direct observation. The techniques for collecting data are by writing descriptions and making an inventory of the variety and arrangement of the materials used in the historic mosques. The research uses open coding to analyse the data by identification of emerging themes from the raw data. The goal is to create descriptive and multi-dimensional categories and build a conceptual model from the categories, which are grouped. This study highlights the themes of materials used in historic mosques in Mosul o...

The most vital factor of sustainability in hot and semi-dry climates is the thermal efficiency of inner spaces. The conventional building materials used in historic buildings in Mosul have high thermal efficiency, but it works with the surrounding built environment as an integrated thermal system. This surrounding built environment could be exposed to dramatic changes within the efforts of reconstruction of Mosul city. Al-Aghawat mosque was selected as a case study due to its surrounding urban context and original conventional building materials. This research adopts ENVImet analysis method. Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET) index was assumed to be the indicator for thermal comfort in hot and semi-dry weather. ENVI-met program applied for simulation of two cases at the hottest day in the summer of 2019-2020 through climatic data. The first case est...

The general problem of the knowledge gaps in the studies and the previous literature appeared. These gaps were determined in four directions (time, spatial, subjective and generality) which were covered in chapter one. Chapter two concentrated on making the concept of changing in architecture clear. This change was due to the architectural elements and their relations leading to the determination of the research problem related to the necessity of measuring the architectural elements and the determining their relations to study and understand the changes. The goal of the research is exploring these elements and the methodology used consist three stages: the construction of the frame for measuring the architectural elements, the determination of their relations and the implementation of the frame on building go back as early as the stages of changing architecture which were determined and the extraction of the variables which took place on the changes of the architectural elements and their relations. The stages of solution started with constructing the Schulz method (cited in Intention In Architecture) on three main aspects: concentration of measuring the mass elements, closure to measure space elements, independence to measure the bounding surfaces and the determination of the relations as topological or geometrical. So, chapter three concentrated on the structural methodology mainly in the form analysis which is regarded as a key to architectural studies. Chapter four demonstrates the requirement of implementation, formulation of the hypothesis. In chapter five, implementation was carried out on the samples. The research showed different results concerning the hypothesis which were formulated in chapter four. It also, displayed the final conclusions in two courses: the first is related to the frame and the second to its implementation.
