This article describes the outcome of open source development in Scilab to support the classroom ... more This article describes the outcome of open source development in Scilab to support the classroom teaching of numerical methods. The routines generate intermediate outputs produced by faithfully following the method of manual resolution taught in the classroom. Students used the functions in Scilab environment for solving problem sets in order to make learning more stimulating and efficient. The use of new tools has increased the level of interest and performance in the class throughout the semester showing a new reality for professors in teaching subjects related to mathematics in higher education.
