This study included fourteen patients with morbid obesity (body mass index, BMI > 40 kg/m2) who underwent bariatric surgery Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in System Health Public in Brazil. Data on demographic and anthropometric measures were extracted from medical records preoperatively and 6 and 12 months post-surgery. The variables assessed were: probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), and stimulated whole-mouth saliva. In this study, saliva samples were analyzed by electrophoresis and immunoblotting. The ELISA kit was used to measure the MMP8 levels to determine potential markers for obesity. Adiponectin and albumin levels were also evaluated. Weight loss was associated with significant changes in patients’ periodontal clinical data. Although 7 out of 10 periodontal patients sho...

Anthropometric measurements were taken from 108 patients of both genders, aging 30 to 60 years. The Berlin's questionnaire (Bq) and the Epworth's sleepiness scale (Ess) were applied to determine the risk for OSAS. Full mouth periodontal status was determined by probing depth, clinical attachment level, gingival bleeding index, and presence of calculus. Unpaired Student t, Chi-square, Fisher Exact, and Mann-Whitney tests were applied to analyze the differences between high- and low-risk for OSAS groups. Overall, 81.5% of the patients showed high-risk for OSAS, 46.3% had excessive daytime sleepiness, 41.5% were positive for both Bq and Ess, 97.2% had periodontal disease (periodontitis=85.2% and gingivitis=60.2%). Patients with periodontal disease showed high-risk for OSAS (82.9%), and Ess (45.7%). However, there was no influence of periodontal disease on OSAS risk. Periodontitis was not associated with Ess (OR=1.84, 95% CI=0.54 - 6.26) or Bq (OR=0.87, 95% CI=0.10 - 7.84). Gingivitis was also not associated with both Ess (OR=1.25, 95% CI=0.48 - 3.25) and Bq (OR=0.23, 95% CI=0.03 - 1.84). Waist circumference (p=0.0255), neck circumference (NC, p<0.0001), and the percentage of predicted neck circumference (PPNC, p<0.0001) were significantly bigger in OSAS high-risk than in the low-risk. Daytime sleepiness was also associated with NC (p=0.016) and PPNC (p=0.016). We concluded that there was no association between periodontal disease and OSAS risk, in class III obese patients. However, OSAS risk was associated with both NC and PPNC.

Saude publica. Protese total.
