The investigation has as its object the scientific document, being executed under the perspective of critical hermeneutics through bibliographical survey, literature review, and analysis of the areas of Science and Technology Studies and KO. The scientific document is understood as a product of broad KO, since it is the material representation of the organised knowledge of one or more scientists, and it is understood as the object of narrow KO. It is concluded that the document is the main link of connection between broad and narrow KO, and that it should be integrated to the fundamental concepts of KO. The investigation is executed under the perspective of critical hermeneutics, through bibliographic survey, literature review, and analysis. Different meanings that the word information had throughout history are analysed in order to understand the sense that the word had when Information Science emerged, and how that definition originated a specific disciplinary paradigm. Next, the transformations of the area throughout its existence are discussed, as well as how those transformations led to the understanding that Information Science is a humanistic and social discipline related to the constitution and transformation of man and world in postmodernity. It is concluded that the hermeneutic paradigm of Information Science presupposes the recovery of its history and that of similar disciplines, as well as the recovery of the history of the uses of the concept of information, being necessary to resume the meanings that the word lost with modernity, mainly those that refer to the active shaping of the world.

It discusses the development of the theoretical-conceptual framework of the discipline and its systematization, concluding that with a systematized theoretical-conceptual framework, the field can better understand its limitations and possibilities, and can develop in cohesively. The research methodology is discussed through the description and examination of critical hermeneutics as a method of analysis. In view of the above, it is briefly stated how we intend to continue the research in order to present the conceptual continuities in the development of the field, and to understand how the cultural and social contexts of modernity and postmodernity have impacted the development of the area, thus allowing the systematization of a hermeneutic metatheory of Information Science.

Understanding how the processes of knowledge organization are tied to the processes of cultural organization can be the means to verify why KOS are so diverse, why their validity is not universal, and why they can mirror privileged world views. Hegemonic conceptions of the relationship between sociocultural forms and Knowledge Organization (KO) may have led to a lack of critical analysis of said relationship, which remained implicit or was considered natural. Considering this situation, this work seeks to discuss the sociocultural patterns that are taken as reference in KO, to briefly describe principles that are related to the modern and postmodern conceptions of science, to explore the reflections of a few Information Science (IS) researchers regarding the relation between knowledge and KO, and to identify a few of the implications of these conceptions in the procedures and products of KO.

Starting with the dictionary definitions of narrative, it follows Ong's (2002) exposition of narrative as a "verbal art" that fixes knowledge by emulating the flow of time, and argues that knowledge and information are narrative structures developed to address specific social contexts. It then explores Hjørland’s (2003, 2008, 2016) framework of a broad and a narrow KO to approach the field of Science and Technology Studies as concerned with broad KO, and its approach of scientific knowledge and information as constructed narratives as one that can inform the understanding of narrow KO. The paper explains narrow KO as concerned with the establishment of narrative techniques, and Knowledge Organisation Systems (KOS) as indirect “stories” or “accounts” of knowledge organisation. It then assesses broad KO’s role through an example of the field’s own history: the Special Libraries and Documentation Movement, which drew the first major narrative of KO through a series shared themes and structures. Finally, it argues the relationship between broad and narrow KO as that of different instances of an overarching narrative of a knowledge field, defining KO as a narrator and translator of epistemological narratives.

Starting from Davis's views on the purpose of information, the paper subsequently describes his projects for the establishment of " one big library " , the Auxiliary Publication Service, " one big journal " , and the " world brain ". Considering Davis as a member of the Special Libraries and Documentation Movement, his connections with its other members are explored. Subsequently, Davis's ideas are analysed and his legacy to Information Science investigated. The paper argues that Davis is an important link between Information Science and its predecessor Documentation, and therefore that he deserves to be subject of deeper research.

Otlet’s conceptions of individual and collective knowledge are addressed, as well as the role of documents in its conservation and communication, in order to show how the intended universal application of Documentation’s principles and methods was supposed to make registered knowledge easily accessible and clearly apprehended as a unified whole. It concludes that Otlet’s Documentation fulfils in its own context the requirement claimed by Hjørland for the KO field of narrow conceptions being sustained by broader views of the organization of knowledge, and therefore qualifies itself as a historical component of KO, being capable of contributing as such to its epistemological and theoretical discussions.

Abstract: The article analyses the museum conceptions of Paul Otlet and Otto Neurath, which can be considered exponents of the Bibliographical Movement, a movement arisen in the transition of the 19th century to the 20th century that sought the organization of the recorded knowledge to its dissemination, access and use. The museums created by Otlet and Neurath are analysed, as well as their museological projects that weren’t implemented and the mutual influence between them, highlighting as principles of their museological conceptions the importance of the social role of museums, visualization and the precedence of the ideas conveyed to the public by the institution
instead of the originality and rarity of the objects displayed.

Abstract: Analyses the objectives and proposals of information organisation developed by the Bibliographic Movement, and indicates its influence in Information Science. This exploratory research, accomplished through bibliographic survey, literature review, and analysis, investigates in the context of modernity the ideas of Bibliographic Movement exponents Paul Otlet, Wilhelm Ostwald, H. G. Wells, John Cotton Dana, and Watson Davis. The Bibliographic Movement was characterized by its plurality, and aimed to respond to modernity’s effects in the information world. The movement attributed to information the potentiality of individual transformation. Therefore, it changed the focus of information services from preservation to access, and pursued the organisation of collections according to its contents. The development of technology made the Bibliographic Movement exponents emphasise the application of new technologies to the process of information dissemination in order to facilitate and accelerate it. Information Science inherited its social role partially from the Bibliographic Movement, and aims at organising information so that it can be accessed. Information Science also shares with the movement the perspective of employing high technology to disseminate information. The Zeitgeist that gave rise to the Bibliographic Movement led to a common set of ideas and allowed the elaboration of similar proposals for the organisation of information. However, it is not discarded the probability of mutual influence between the individuals analysed. Despite its historical specificity the Bibliographic Movement shares with Information Science modern ideas and its relation to culture. It is concluded that the current information culture and the information culture of the Bibliographic Movement have differences, notwithstanding, they are entwined cultures and many of their problems are similar and need similar solutions.

13th International ISKO Conference: Knowledge Organization in the 21st Century: Between Historical Patterns and Future Prospects (Advances in Knowledge Organization, v. 14), 2014
