Research paper thumbnail of An Automated Product Identification System for Reverse Logistics Operation

Nowadays, product manufacturers and consumers started to be more concerned about the environment.... more Nowadays, product manufacturers and consumers started to be more concerned about the environment. For that reason, manufacturers started to accept used product from the consumer community in order to recycle, remanufacture, resale, refurbished or for disposal. This activity is known as Reverse Logistics. Although Reverse Logistics can be considered as an environmentally friendly activity, some manufacturers have some reservation based on some drawbacks for example difficulty in forecasting product returns, complex product identification process and returns management. An Automated Product Identification System is proposed as a substitute to manual identification method to identify product returns. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is used as a data storing mechanism for recyclable products. All value added activities are 'recorded' in the RFID tags mounted on the product. Once the product enters the Reverse Logistics chain, Reverse Logistics operators can retr...

Research paper thumbnail of Correlation between RFID Network Planning (RNP) Parameters and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Solutions

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013

ABSTRACT Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is often used for solving RFID Network Plann... more ABSTRACT Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is often used for solving RFID Network Planning (RNP) problems. However, the direct correlation between RNP parameters (coordinates and power settings of RFID readers) and PSO solutions is rarely shown. This is due to the fact that most researches done in this field focus more on the development of new variants of PSO and the optimization result. For that reason, this paper tends to investigate the correlation between RNP parameters and PSO solutions. One of RNP objectives (Optimal Tag Coverage) is taken as an example. The formula of optimal tag coverage is elaborated in order to expose the allocation of RNP parameters in the formula. In addition, a representation system for embedding RNP parameters in PSO solution is explained. This paper can also serves as an early guideline for solving RNP problems using PSO algorithm.
